Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) An exploration of principles, methods and materials for teaching young children music, movement, visual arts and dramatic play through process-oriented experiences to support divergent thinking.

Textbooks

Mayesky:  Creative Activities for Young Children, 11th edition, 2015, Cengage Learning.  Textbook is bundled with Blackboard Edition Mindlink at the AC West Campus Bookstore.  Mindlink is necessary in order to view all of the publisher content including the teach source videos.

Supplies

Supply needs will be discussed in class.  Students will need access to a computer and the internet.

2. Describe the role of play in a child's growth and developemnt.
3. Describe developmental sequences for creative arts.
4. Analyze teacher roles in enhancing creativity.
5. Describe concepts taught through the creative arts.
6. Describe components of creative environments.
7. Plan, implement and assess child-centered activities for music, movement, visual arts and dramatic play.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to follow all Amarillo College policies and procedures.

Grading Criteria

A maximum of 600 points will be possible.

Grade point distribution:

Attendance and participation    100 points

4 exams                                    400 points

Music/movement activity            50 points

Art activity                                 50 points

 

                     TOTAL               600 points

Final Grades:

540 - 600  = A

480 - 539 = B

420 - 479 = C

360 - 419 = D

Below 360 = F

 

  • Attendance/Participation (100 points)

  • 4 exams (400 points)

Tests may consist of multiple choice, short answer, and/or matching.  All exams will be taken on line.

  • Music/movement activity (50 points)

Plan an appropriate music and/or movement activity to do with a group of children.  Bring your lesson plan and materials needed for the activity on the date assigned.

  • Art Activity (50 points)

Plan a developmentally appropriate art activity for young children to share with the class.  Bring lesson plan and materials for activity to class on the date assigned.

 

Attendance

This class meets weekly for 8 weeks in Room 139 of the Allied Health Building on the West AC Campus from 5:30-8:30.  The first class is on Tuesday, January 21, and the last class is on Tuesday, March 10.

  • Attend class as scheduled.   Part of the grade for this class is based on attendance and participation.
  • Read the assigned chapters in the book and be prepared for weekly discussions.
  • Satisfactorily complete exams with 70% mastery or above.
  • Complete assignments and projects on time.
  • Be a team player: dependable, hard working, and helpful.
