Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) This course will provide a survey of biological principles with an emphasis on humans, including evolution, ecology, plant and animal diversity and physiology. Laboratory activities will reinforce lecture content.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE, COMPETENCIES AND OBJECTIVES: 

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department.

1. Apply scientific reasoning to investigate questions, and utilize scientific tools such as microscopes and laboratory equipment to collect and analyze data.
2. Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving to make informed decisions in the laboratory.
3. Communicate effectively the results of scientific investigations.
4. Distinguish between prokaryotic, eukaryotic, plant and animal cells, and identify major cell structures.
5. Identify stages of the cell cycle, mitosis (plant and animal), and meiosis.
6. Interpret results from cell physiology experiments involving movement across membranes, enzymes, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration.
7. Apply genetic principles to predict the outcome of genetic crosses and statistically analyze results.
8. Identify the importance of karyotypes, pedigrees, and biotechnology.
9. Identify parts of a DNA molecule, and describe replication, transcription, and translation.
10. Analyze evidence for evolution and natural selection.

Expected Student Behavior

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE: If a student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try and resolve any such problems with the instructor. If the grievance is not resolved, he or she can contact the Department of Biological Sciences Chairperson, the Dean of Sciences and Engineering, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the College President, IN THAT ORDER.

WITHDRAWAL: A grade of "W" will be given for drops or withdraws on or before the published official withdraw date, February 5, 2020.

BAD WEATHER
If classes are canceled due to inclement weather, you are responsible for reading and learning the material that would have been covered.  If an exam was scheduled and classes are canceled, the exam time will not be extended unless classes are canceled on the last day of an Exam.  If this happens the Instructor will set a new end date for that exam. (BE PREPARED) If class is canceled the last day of the semester and an exam was scheduled, then the exam will be added to the Final Exam and the questions will count as the exam and as the final exam. If class is canceled during finals week, check the AC website for new exam times. Cancellations will be announced on the Radio by 6:30 AM or by 3:00 PM for evening classes. Also check the AC website.

 

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

All students shall obey the law, show respect for properly constituted authority, and observe correct standards of conduct. In addition to activities prohibited by law, the following types of behavior are prohibited:

“Cheating on a test” shall include:

  1. Copying from another student’s test paper.
  2. Using test materials not authorized by the person administering the test.
  3. Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test without permission from the test administrator.
  4. Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of a pending test.
  5. The unauthorized transporting or removal, in whole or in part, of the contents of the pending test.
  6. Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for one’s self, to take a test.
  7. Bribing another person to obtain a pending test or information about a pending test

CELL PHONES: It is the policy of the Biology Department that cell phones must be turned off or in the silent mode in the classroom. Students are NOT allowed to use the cell phone during the class time. If a student gets a phone call during class he/she will NOT answer it during class time unless prior approval by the instructor. Please be considerate to others.

 

 

QUIZ and FINAL EXAM RULES: Do nothing which would appear to involve cheating.  Failure to abide by the quiz rule will result in a grade of zero.  Once a quiz has been started you may not leave the classroom for any reason.  Use the facilities prior to starting the quiz.  When you turn your quiz in, it is final.  You can not get it back to make changes.  If you believe that a paper has been graded incorrectly, please return it with a written explanation which must include: 1) your name, 2) the number of the question(s) you wish to have reconsidered, and 3) a detailed explanation of the mistake and documentation for the correct answer (include page numbers and source).
You must also finish before the due date and time or a grade of zero will be assigned. Extra time will not be given to an individual student.  Please do not ask.

 

Grading Criteria

Exams count for 60%, Quizzes and Assignments count for 20% and Lab Tests and Assignments count 20% of the course grade.

GRADING SCALE: Grades will not be curved and there will be NO EXTRA CREDIT.
89.5 - 100 = A
79.5 - 89.4 = B
69.5 - 79.4 = C
59.5 - 69.4 = D
00.0 - 59.4 = F

 

 

LECTURE EXAMS - 60%
Exams are worth 60% of the overall grade for the course. There will be 4 exams and a comprehensive final exam. You will be allowed to drop one exam grade. Each exam is worth 15% for a combined 60%, once the lowest exam is dropped. Four lecture exams (multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer). The exam material will come from the lecture outlines, textbook readings, web readings, lab manual, and other assignments. One exam grade will be dropped, this may include the final exam. If you MISS the due date and time for an exam for any reason, a grade of zero will be assigned for that exam will be your drop for the semester. NO MAKE-UPS or extra time will be given for any reason on any EXAM.

FINAL EXAM OPTION: If you have taken a total of (4) lecture exams and you are satisfied with your grade prior to the final exam, you can elect to use your final exam grade as the drop grade INSTEAD of one of the lecture exams. (Remember NO MAKE - UPS on exams).

 

QUIZZES/ ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS 15%
There will be quizzes and/or additional assignments during the semester. The quizzes will be fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, labeling, and/or short answer. IMPORTANT!! the quizzes are (usually) given at the beginning of the class. If you are late to class and the quiz has already begun you may participate in the quiz but you will have to finish with other students. However, arriving after the quiz is finished will prevent you from taking it and a grade of zero will be assigned for this quiz. MISSING the DUE DATE and/or TIME for any quiz or assignment, a grade of zero will be assigned for that quiz or assignment and that will be your drop for the semester.   

 

CLASS PARTICIPATION - 5%                                                                                                                                                                                                          Some activities will be done during the class time and they will be counted for class participation.

 

LAB GRADE 20%

Your Lab grade will be determined by laboratory attendance,  participation, and the two lab practicals. 

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: please remember the following:                                                                                                                                                 

  1. NO MAKE-UPS or extra time will be given for any reason on any quiz, assignment, or exam                                                                               

  2. NO EXTRA-CREDIT will be given for any reason

 

FINAL GRADE CHANGES: The final grade turned into the registrar office will not be changed unless approved by full time biology faculty committee. Request must be submitted in writing.

 

 

Testing Center:

  • Warren Hall Room 122

All lecture tests, excluding take-home exams and final exams, will be taken in the Testing Center during days scheduled by the teacher during normal Testing Center hours.  Tests will be taken outside of class lecture time.  Please note:  No test may be started less than 1.5 hour before the Science Testing Center closes. You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test. The Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and will return it to you when you turn in your test.  No appointments are necessary (However, I suggest you check for availability)

  • **It is the student responsibility to check for the working hours of the Testing Center and the last test handout time. Regular hours of the Washington Street Campus Science Testing Center are: 
    • Mon: 9 am -10 pm (last test at 8:30 pm)
    • Tue: 9 am -10 pm (last test at 8:30 pm) 
    • Wed: 9 am-5:30 pm (last test at 4:00 pm)
    • Thur: 9 am -10 pm (last test at 8:30 pm)
    • Fri: 9 am -10 pm (last test at 8:30 pm)
    • Sat: 9am-7:30pm (last test at 6:00 pm)

Mandatory Tutoring:

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory 1 hour tutoring session before taking the next exam. Before getting mandatory tutoring, students must first make a tutoring session appointment. 

  • **NOTE (a new tutoring/testing center policy): students may NOT be allowed to take the tutoring and the test in the same day.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  It is therefore the responsibility of the student to attend class. Absences result in zeros for any missed quizzes, exams, presentations or participation grades. If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course, you will receive an “F” for the course. A grade of “W” will be given for student-initiated drops or withdrawals. Texas law now mandates that students may only drop or withdraw 6 times in their entire college careers, excluding drops prior to the census date.  Before a student can drop a class, they must first meet with the instructor.

Students must Scan in at the beginning of class- All students must bring their student ID with them to     every class.  When students enter the class you must scan in.  Smart phones can also be used by downloading “Ellucian Go”, which will contain there virtual, ID.  When students miss (2) consecutive absences, a retention alert case will be generated and a text and email message will be sent to the student at 7 am the next morning.  Three total absences during the semester will result in another retention alert.  Student academic affairs are notified of all retention alerts

Additional Information

EMAIL: To insure email delivery, please email your instructor from your student email (inside the course using the email link on the left side of the screen). The instructor will check email Monday - Thursday by 5:00 PM and Fridays by 1:00PM. Emails after 5:00PM will be checked the following day. The instructor will try to respond within 24 hours, except on Fridays and week ends. Remember instructors teach numerous other courses. Be patient.

Also remember Instructor's emails are sent to your default email address. The students are responsible for checking their emails regularly as the instructor may send some course notifications. 

 

CLASS WEBSITE: AC Online is utilized in this class as a grade book and e-mail system. There may be quizzes and other assignments to be completed through AC Online. I will post announcements, lecture and lab handouts, photos, and other important material via AC Online. The login for AC Online is the same as with WebAdvisor. If you do not have a computer or internet access at home, you have available to you the computer lab on campus in the library second floor.
