The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

***Once a student meets the qualifications to register and take the National Board Exams, they need to be prepared to pay for the exams. Remember that both Arts and Sciences exams must be taken prior to your graduation. The fee for both exams is $500.00 (subject to change). Price is set by the International Conference of Funeral Service Examing Boards. If you successfully meet the requirements of this course and the program, you will be certified by the program director to test. The fee is paid by the student directly to the IBFSE when they register (after being certified).

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD / DELIVERY:
This is the CAPSTONE course for the MRTS.AAS program. Students enrolled in this course must be in their final semester of study.
This course and all course work must be completed successfully according to this syllabus prior to National Board Examination Certification by the program director.
To be certified to sit for and take the National Board Exam, one must:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will be presented with terminology and practice exams covering all 13 'mortuary science' related sections that are subject to appear on the National Board Exam in an attempt to prepare them for the exam. The National Board Exam changed the way the questions are categorized in September of 2012. For example, the following subjects in science are anatomy, chemistry, pathology, microbiology. On the new exam, they are combined. We will give you practice exams on the subjects separately to give you a broader coverage of possible questions you may see.
Students will have completed all necessary course work for the Mortuary Science AAS degree at Amarillo College.
Students will make application to Amarillo College for graduation.
Students will have an exit interview with the program director. At this time grades will be verified in all course work and NBE may be scheduled.
Students will register to take the National Board Examination and pay the required fees at http://www.theconferenceonline.org/.
No student will be certified to take the NBE until all requirements of the program have been met.

Grading Policy
Per our Amarillo College Course Guide for the Mortuary Science Program:
To continue in the program, a student may repeat a MRTS course only one time and may repeat no more than two MRTS courses while enrolled in the program. The term “repeat” shall be interpreted to mean re-enrollment following withdrawal, drop or unsatisfactory grade. A grade of C or higher is required for satisfactory completion of all major course requirements, PSYT 1325 or HPRS 2301. Students who receive an F in two or more major course requirements, PSYT 1325 or HPRS 2301 will be removed from the program. A student will have 36 months to complete all major requirements.

Given you meet the guidelines presented in this syllabus, your final grade in this course will be calculated as follows:

NOTE: INCOMPLETE WILL NOT BE GIVEN IN THIS COURSE FOR ANY REASON.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, EVEN IF YOU PASS YOUR PRACTICE EXAMS AND D.E.A.D TESTING ACCORDING TO THE SYLLABUS, IF YOU FAIL TO MAKE AN 85 OR BETTER ON BOTH THE ART FINAL AND THE SCIENCE FINAL, YOU WILL FAIL THIS COURSE.
After the student completes the course he/she will have a software called D.E.A.D loaded on tto their computer for 90 days. The student takes these test for continued preparation of the board exam. In this time period the student must send 10 test scores of 90 - 100 with documentation confirming the scores. After that the student will take the Practice Exam with the International Conference of Examing Boards. NO EXCEPTIONS
If you do not follow the timeline laid out for you in this course it will be difficult for you to complete.
IF A STUDENT MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER TO TAKE THE NBE, THEY NEED TO ALLOW 1-2 DAYS FOR THE APPLICATION PROCESS. DO NOT DELAY OR PROCRASTINATE. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE FOR ANYONE. SO, BE RESPONSIBLE AND ALLOW APPROPRIATE TIME TO TAKE THE NBE EXAMS BEFORE THE CLASS DEADLINE.
Class attendance should be regarded as an obligation and all students are expected to attend class. Attendance in an online course is logging in and accessing course content. Simply logging in is not acceptable as attendance. Instructors are able to track your login and content access.

The National Board Exam(s) are NOT to be taken lightly. Not only does your career and goals depend on your passing of them, but the future of this program do as well. The program takes this very seriously and will not allow anyone to take the NBE if they have not proven through this course they are ready and prepared.

Week 1 (09/21 - 09/26) Review syllabus, understand class expectations, print off syllabus acknowledgment form and return to instructor, print off and begin studying glossary terms and other resources. This assignment is due on Sunday, January 26, 2020. Write 10 questions that you as a student would possibly see on the National Board Exam referring too Sociology and History. This assignment is due on Sunday, January 26, 2020. Practice Exams will open for Sociology and History.
Week 2 - Week 3 (09/27 - 02/02) Practice Exams have opened. You MUST attempt the section that is listed in the MODULE ONLY at least 3 times by Sunday, February 2, 2020. You must score at least a 75 in each section. The exams are set to be attempted as many times as you like. So, if you do not score a 75 in one section, you MUST continue taking that section until you score a 75 or better by the due date. DO NOT wait until the last minute. Go to https://theconference.org and review policy and procedures regarding testing and protocol. Write a one page paper outlining their policy and procedures assignment. This assignment is due Sunday, February 2, 2020. In the Taggart book on pg. 48 review the Orhodox Church (Eastern Orthodox Church) Funeral Rites/Rituals. Write a one page paper outlining the directions for conducting this type of Service. This assignment is due on Sunday, February 9, 2020. Class colloboration on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 7:00 PM Texas Time.
Week 4 - Week 5 (02/10 - 02/16) Practice Exams - You MUST attempt the section that is listed in the MODULE ONLY at least 3 times by February 16, 2020. You must score at least an 80 in each section. The exams are set to be attempted as many times as you like. So, if you do not score an 80 in one section, you MUST continue taking that section until you score an 80 or better by the due date. Write a page and half regarding family structure. This assignment is due on Sunday, February 16, 2020. In the Taggart book on pgs. 146 - 157 pick two points regarding the FTC (The Funeral Rule) and describe them in a post and then reply to two students with a 50 word minimum reply, This assignment is due on Sunday, February 23, 2020.
Week 6 - Week 7 (02/24 - 03/08) Practice Exams - You MUST attempt the section that is listed in the MODULE ONLY at least 3 times by Sunday, March 8, 2020. You must score at least an 80 in each section. The exams are set to be attempted as many times as you like. So if you do not score an 80 in one section, you MUST continue taking that section until you score an 80 or better by the due date. DO NOT wait until the last minute. Test, Test and Test for week 6. On pgs. 121 - 123 in the Taggart book pick 10 definitions for each catagory (Patho & Chemistry) and define them and post your definitions and reply to two other students. Week 8 - 9 (03/09 - 03/22) Practice Exams - You MUST attempt the sectionthat is listed in the MODULE ONLY at least 3 times by Sunday, March 22, 2020. You must score at least an 85 in each section. The exams are set to be attempted as many times as you like. So, if you do not score an 85 in the section, you MUST continue taking that section until you score an 85 or better by the due date. Describe and post them with a minimum of 200 words and then reply to two students with a minimum of 50 words. In the Taggart book on pg. 13 review Terms regarding Signs of Death. Post your discussion with a 200 word minimum of 50 words. This assignment is due on Sunday, April 5, 2020.
Week 12 - Week 13 (04/06 - 04/19)) Practice Exams - You MUST attempt the section that is listed in the MODULE ONLY at least 3 times by Sunday April 19, 2020. You must score at least a 90 in each section. The exams are set to be attempted as many times as you like. So, if you do not score a 90 in one section, you MUST continue taking that section until you score a 90 or better by the due date. DO NOT wait until the last minute. In the Taggart book on pgs. 40 - 50 under treatment regarding Embalming Fluids describe two situations where and why you would have to use a specific fluid due to a specific case, such as Jaundice. Post your discussion question with a minimum of 200 words and reply to two students with a minimum of 50 words. This assignment is due on Sunday, April 12, 2020. Week 16 (05/04 - 05/15) Final Exam #1 - Available on Monday, May 11, 2020 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 (8:00 AM - 11:00 PM) You must score an 85 or better on the comprehensive FINAL EXAM to pass this course. If you pass this course AND meet all other course requirements for the 'Certificate of Completion' in Funeral Directing, the program director will certify you to register for the Texas State Board Exam in Funeral Directing. The program director will email you instructions on what steps to take to register, pay and take the State Board Exam.
COMPOSITION OF THE NATIONAL BOARD EXAMINATION
The National Board Examination consists of two parts: the Funeral Service Arts Examination and the Funeral Service Sciences Examination. NOTE: If you pass a section of the board exam, you do not have to take it again. If you fail a section, you must wait a minimum of 90 days before you can pay and take it again.

The Funeral Service Arts Examination consists of 170 multiple-choice questions, 150 scored items and 20 unscored pre-test items. You are allotted three hours for this examination: three minutes to agree to the non-disclosure and two hours and 57 minutes to complete the exam.
