Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisites

Course Description

Intro to a workforce training course that assists with basic skills for developing math and critical reading skills for ABE levels 1-4. Emphasis on arithmetic review of whole numbers and fractions; decimals; ratio and percent; measurement and basic geometry; signed numbers; simple algebraic expressions; applications. Adult Basic Education Credit Level. Special emphasis on workforce training in a career cluster.

Student Performance

After studying the material presented in this course, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Apply the four arithmetic operations using order of operations on signed numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  2. Apply conversions between fractions, decimals, and percent.
  3. Evaluate the perimeter, area, and volume of basic geometric shapes.
  4. Apply conversions within the U.S. system of measurement and the Metric system of measurement.
  5. Apply statistical skills in various types of stated problems, including mean, median, mode, probability and combinations.
  6. Apply mathematical skills to evaluate equations from various types of stated problems, then state solutions in complete sentences.
  7. Evaluate data from tables and graphs.

Expected Student Behavior

You are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Behaviors that are not supportive include, but are not limited to: tardiness/leaving early; electronic device noises; talking during lecture; abusive, offensive, or disrespectful language; abusive, offensive, or disrespectful demeanor toward AC faculty, staff, students and/or property.

If you fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” you will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to: removal from the classroom; consultation with the Dean of Academic Success and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.  

Grading Criteria

GRADING SCALE:
< 60% = F
60-69% = D
70-79% = C 
80-89% = B
>90% = A

*Only students with an average score of 70% or higher will advance to the next math level, Algebra. 

Grading will be weighted as follows:
Skill Drills: 30% 
Spiral Quizzes: 30%
Midterm Exam: 20%
Final Exam: 20%
** There are no grade recovery options in this course and no extra credit opportunities are available.

A grade of “F” will be earned as follows:
You complete the course with an overall average below 60.
You do not complete the course and do not withdraw from the course in time to receive a grade of “W”.
You violate the cheating and plagiarism policy.

 

COURSE MATERIAL DESCRIPTIONS:

Skill Drill Homework, Spiral Quizzes, Midterm and Final are all graded. Homework and Spiral Quizzes are done outside of class and due as noted on the schedule of instruction.

Fast Facts (Not Graded but Mandatory)
Fast Facts are timed drills to improve speed and accuracy on a variety of mental math skills. These are given at the beginning of class two to four times a week. No calculators are allowed. Fast Facts answers are given immediately, and it is the students’ responsibility to raise questions over Fast Facts for immediate review and correction by instructor. It is important to be in class on time so as not to miss Fast Facts.

Skill Drills (Homework)                                                          
Skill Drills are homework that are assigned to reinforce the lessons taught in the classroom. Skill Drills are required to be completed on Blackboard and will consist of the day’s lesson and a mini spiral review of previous skills. Skill Drills are crucial to the learning and retention of course material. Completing each of you Skill Drills is one of the best things you can do to improve your grade. Calculators are not allowed unless othewise stated.

Spiral Quizzes (Quiz)
Spiral Quizzes are weekly quizzes assigned on Blackboard. Sprial Quizzes will contain new and previous material. Calculators are not allowed unless othewise stated.

Midterm Exam & Final Exam
The Midterm and Final Exam, will be taken in the classroom on a days scheduled on the Schedule of Instruction. The exam will be taken up at the end of the class period and no extra time will be allotted. Tests must be taken in class on or before the assigned date. No retakes. Missed tests must be taken the next class day only at the instructor’s approval and only for excused absence on test day.
The Midterm and Final are given in two parts. Students may only use the approved TI-30xs calculators on specific portions of the test allowed by the instructor. No cell phones or unapproved calculators may be used.
All answers are to be written on the Answer Form and on the test. Both the test and the Answer Form must be turned in before leaving the classroom.

 

GED TESTING:
GED Tests and GED Ready (Official Practice Tests) can be taken at any time the student is ready. Taking a GED Test or a GED Ready do not excuse the student from the class. Tests and practice tests must be taken outside of class time on the student’s own time.
A score of 145 is passing. A score of 150 on the GED Ready (Official Practice Test) can earn the student a voucher to pay for up to two GED exams.
Once the GED Mathematics Test is passed the student will have officially passed the class, even if the course is not over, and the student does not need to return to the math class and will receive a passing score.

TUTORING

Math Outreach Center (806-371-5119)
Located on the Washington Street Campus in Durrett 104. (Math only)
When using the Math Outreach Center you are required to scan in and out with your Amarillo College I.D. and you must have your math homework/workbook with you. Tutors will not give you answers but will reinforce concepts taught in class to help you answer the homework questions yourself. Tutors cannot help on any quizzes.

Attendance

Career Ready You  Departmental  Attendance = Success Policy

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is your responsibility as a student to attend class and be on time for daily attendance check.  Nonattendance will be recorded as an absence and no differentiation will be made as to excused or unexcused absences.  Repeated leaving class early or coming in late will be counted as an absence. 

After 3 absences you may be asked to stop attending and return to the course over at the next course opening.

After dropping or stopping out of the course twice, you may not be allowed to attend until the next school year.
