Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) An advanced brake system course for diesel powered equipment. Advanced concepts and schematics including anti-lock (ABS), air, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems and related components.

Supplies

Every student will be required to wear an approved AC logo shirt or a company shirt with company logo from the company that the student works for, to both class and lab. Pants will be respectable and wore properly, waist up around the waist where they belong.  Safety glasses are the responsibility of the student and will be worn at all times while in the shop/lab environment. Clean up materials will be supplied as needed. Special tools will be supplied as needed. Safety shoes/boots, with slip resistance soles. Steel toes not required. No regular tennis shoes allowed.

Tools are not required to be brought to class by the student. Necessary tools and equipment are provided for in class use for assigned class and lab projects.

Tools are required for student employment during program and before graduation. Tool Purchase Opportunities with discounts at  Mac, Snap-on and Western Equipment will be given and encouraged.

Cost for these tools and boxes average $1500.00 - $2000.00. You are responsible for purchasing these tools before graduation.

Required professional and safety attire is mandatory for class and laboratory participation.

Disciplinary action is at instructor’s discretion.

Student Performance

 End-of-Course Outcomes:  Apply advanced brake information with emphasis on diagnostics and component relationships; utilize specialized brake tools and diagnostic equipment; and perform advanced brake repairs.

An introduction to basic principles of heavy duty hydraulic and air brakes on Heavy Duty trucks. The student will get hands on experience on brake systems; read and interpret technical manuals; and identify brake components, diagnose and repair brake systems.

Lecture and discuss Textbook Chapters 28-31. ASE format multiple choice tests.

Lectures and hands on assignments help prepare students for the ASE Med/Heavy Diesel brakes tests. Workbook and textbook Chapters 28-31 assignments to be finished and turned in for grading and review for test.

NATEF:

Drain air reservoir/tanks; check for oil, water, and foreign material;

determine needed action.

Inspect and test air system pressure controls: governor, unloader assembly valves, filters, lines, hoses, and fittings; adjust or replace as needed.

Inspect and test air tank relief (safety) valves, one-way (single) check valves, two-way (double) check valves, manual and automatic drain valves; replace as needed.

Inspect and test brake application (foot/treadle) valve, fittings, and mounts; check pedal operation; replace as needed.

 Inspect and test hand brake (trailer) control valve, lines, fittings, and mountings; repair or replace as needed.

Inspect and test service brake chambers, diaphragm, clamp, spring, pushrod, clevis, and mounting brackets; repair or replace as needed.

Identify type, inspect and service slack adjusters; perform needed action

Inspect hydraulic system brake lines, flexible hoses, and fittings for leaks and damage; replace as needed.

Inspect/test brake fluid; bleed and/or flush system; determine proper fluid type.

Observe antilock brake system (ABS) warning light operation (includes trailer and dash mounted trailer ABS warning light); determine needed action.

Expected Student Behavior

Maturity, honesty and respect is required and given.

As a participating student in Amarillo College Technical Programs, you will be expected to act, perform and train in a professional manner.

Compliance with the Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct is mandatory for class participation.

Students must come to class wearing the appropriate AC uniform shirt or a company shirt with the company logo from the company that the student works for.

Student MUST wear safety glasses in the shop/lab.

No cell phones are to be in use during class unless requested by instructor.

Students will be respectful of other classes being conducted in the building, respectful of instructor.

Students are expected to dress appropriately (shirts tucked in, no profanity on clothing, pants must be worn in the proper location (around the waist).

No head gear to be worn in building, except in shop, then must be worn appropriately. 

No tobacco or e-vape use on campus.

Student will have the text book out following along with lecture and participating in the lecture and class.

Grading Criteria

Final grade will be figured by Home work will be worth 10%, Test will be worth 15%, Attendance will be worth 40%, Job work sheets will be worth 10% and Shop will be worth 25%.

             Final grade = Sum of Average of home work grades X 10% + Test X 15%, + Attendance grade X 40%, + Job work sheets average X 10% and Shop grade X 25%.

            Shop/lab projects grade is at the instructor’s discretion.

Homework is due the class day after the test for the chapter(s), or 10 points will be taken off grade of the homework for each class day that it is late. Homework for the last chapter(s) of the course is due day of the last test.

All job work sheets are due by the next shop class after the job work sheet was to be done or five points will be taken from the grade for each class day late.

Shop write ups are due by the next shop day or five points will be taken off the shop write up for each class day that it is late.

 

Lose of points from being absent; tardiness and leaving early totaling 3 days will result in a failure grade.

Instructor holds the rights to add to the points or take points away, depending on student’s performance.

Student following of the Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct will be considered in the final grade.

Being absent more than 3 days will result in a failing grade, no matter what the students other grades add up to.

Attendance

Class attendance is mandatory and will effect final grade. Learning tricks of the trade will only come from attending lectures and hands on instruction.

Points will be taken off for tardiness and leaving early.


Loss of points from being absent; tardiness and/ or leaving early adding up to 3 days will result in a failing grade.

Being absent more than 3 days will result in a failing grade, no matter what the students other grades add up to.

Points taken off for tardy and early departures will be at instructor’s discretion.

Leaving without signing out is same as Early Departure Unexcused.

Signing out early without instructor’s permission is same as Early Departure Unexcused.

 Students must sign themselves in and out. Students are not allowed to sign another student in or out.

Instructor holds the rights to add to the points or take points away, depending on student’s performance.

Calendar

This schedule is a tentative outline of times and test.  These dates are subject to change dependent on speed of individual classes and informational transition to students.  If you plan on missing any days of instruction, your instructor must be given this information in writing, or E-Mail.  Failure to follow these instructions forfeits the student’s ability to make up work test outside of the instructors permission.

 Students are advised to have an after one job as a Diesel Technician helper at a local dealership or repair facility.
