The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Optional: Long, DeTemple, Millman, Mathematical Reasoning for Elementary Teachers, Seventh Edition. Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2015.
Required: MyLab and Mastering Student Access Kit by Pearson.
TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator (scientific is acceptable, but TI-84 recommended) and access to a computer with Internet. A TI-Nspire calculator is not acceptable.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
1. Explain and model the arithmetic operations for whole numbers and integers.
2. Explain and model computations with fractions, decimals, ratios, and percentages.
3. Describe and demonstrate how factors, multiples, and prime numbers are used to solve problems.
4. Apply problem solving skills to numerical applications.
5. Represent and describe relationships among sets using the appropriate mathematical terminology and notation.
6. Compare and contrast structures of numeration systems.

POLICY ON CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Students that cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test will receive an automatic “F” in the course. This grade will go on your permanent transcript and cannot be removed. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, copying or leaving the Math Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test. This includes working together on tests in MyMathLab.
BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES: Students are expected to behave in the online environment the same way as in a traditional classroom. In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered. Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to; denied access to online course, consultation with department chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.
The final grades of A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), and F (below 60) will be computed as follows:

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD / EXAMINATIONS: There will be graded homework assignments, lesson activities, five chapter exams, midterm and final.

Homework will be assigned online using the http://pearsonmylabandmastering.com/ website, which you access through our course in Blackboard. It is your responsibility to complete these assignments by 11:59 p.m. Central time on their due date. At the end of the semester, 1 homework grade will be dropped. |
Lesson Activities |
Activities such as discussion forums, exam reflections, etc. will be assigned and completed in Blackboard. They can be accessed through the weekly course material. |
Chapter Examinations |
Five chapter exams will be taken online and graded electronically. These online exams will be due by 11:59 p.m. Central time on the due date. Your lowest one exam will be dropped at the end of the semester. Students scoring below a 70 on an exam will be required to get help from the Math Outreach Center or instructor before taking the next exam. |
Final Exam |
The final exam will be completed in MyMathLab. It is comprehensive and will count at 15% of your overall average. |
Late Work/Extra Credit |
Deadlines are your responsibility. Due dates are posted on the MyMathLab website and in the class in Blackboard (through the AC Connect Portal). However, because this is an online course, I can tailor it to your individual needs without disrupting the flow of the course. If you need a deadline extension for online assignments (up to 2 days maximum), please don't hesitate to ask. No extensions are available, however, for chapter 6 online exam or the final exam. No extra credit is given. |

Expectations and Requirements for this course
Every online class is different; it makes sense to outline my policies and expectations so that each student is well informed as they begin the class as to what will be required of them.
Weekly Routine
At the beginning of each week, the student should first log in to Blackboard. In the Fundamentals of Math I course, navigate to the "Weekly Lessons" link and locate the lesson for the week. Read the lesson Start Here document. Here you will find information about what you need to complete for the week. Work through the information in the "start here" document. Then, go to the MyMathLab link and complete the online MyMathLab homework. Take assigned exams on MyMathLab by the deadlines posted on MyMathLab and on the sylalbus.
