Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) SPCH 1318: Interpersonal Communication

Application of communication theory to interpersonal relationship development, maintenance and termination in relationship contexts including friendships, romantic partners, families and relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Exhibit understanding of interpersonal theories and principles.
  2. Demonstrate ability to analyze and critique verbal and nonverbal interactions in mediated and face-to-face contexts.
  3. Identify perceptual processes as they relate to self and others.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking ability by effectively researching, evaluating and applying communication theories in oral and/or written assignments.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the relevance of cross-cultural, co-cultural, gender and age influences on human communication.
  6. Demonstrate ability to identify, evaluate and apply conflict styles and conflict management techniques in dyads and/or groups.
  7. Identify types of and barriers to effective listening.

Expected Student Behavior

  • The use of cell phones in class is strictly prohibited.  This includes phone calls, phones ringing, and text messaging in class.  Please feel free to take calls and texts in the hallway.
  • Speeches/presentations are delivered on assigned days.  If you know well in advance, other arrangements might be possible. 
  • Tests will be made up only in emergencies.  Prior approval must be obtained from the instructor.
  • Late papers will be accepted no later than the following class meeting, with a 20 point penalty.
  • No substances or equipment in violation of Amarillo College’s Student Code of Life will permitted in speech communication courses.
  • Plagiarism is considered serious academic misconduct.  All speeches and papers presented should be the work of the student enrolled in the course.  Proper documentation should be made of materials cited from all sources.  If it is determined that a student has plagiarized a speech, paper, or exam, student will receive a grade of 0 and disciplinary proceedings against the student could ensue.
  • The instructor AND student will initiate administrative withdrawals.  If you need to withdraw from (drop) the class, you must contact your instructor, and then your instructor will approve the withdrawal with the Registrar’s Office.  If you stop attending class, but do not officially withdraw from the class, grades will be assigned based on the work required for the class, not just work completed.

*Students who have perfect attendance will be exempt from the Final Exam.

It is the responsibility of the student to sign-in for daily attendance records.  If the student does not sign-in appropriately, he or she will not qualify for the exemption from the Final Exam as part of the perfect attendance incentive.  

3 tardies = 1 absence.  3 early exits = 1 absence.

You will have several assignments to complete each week. Unless otherwise specified, all assignments are due on Sunday by 11:59PM.

Week 1: June 8-14  
Purchase your textbook. “Interpersonal Messages” by Joseph Devito includes an on-line component called Revel. This is where you will complete your readings and quizzes. You must purchase Revel to be successful in the course.
Read the Start Here lesson. It is the link called “Start Here” on Blackboard- This will help you learn how to navigate the course

Assignments for the week Due Sunday by 11:59PM
Reading: Revel Chapter 1- read the chapter and complete the short quizzes after each section. Do not complete shared writing.
Assessment: Take the Revel chapter 1 final quiz at the end of the chapter.
Interaction: Post to the “Coffee Talk discussion board, and reply to two classmates
Real life application:Complete the journal assignment “Strengths, Weaknesses and Goals”

Reading: Revel Assignment- Chapter 3:  Perception of Self and others and Chapter 4 listening and Interpersonal Communication
Read the chapters and Take the short quizzes after each section. Quizzes only, not shared writing
Real life application: Journal Entry: What are the sources of self-concept?. Answer the three questions on figure 3.1. then, relate the factors to your own life experience.

Week 3: June   22-28
Reading: Revel Assignment- Interpersonal Relationships Chapter 9

Major Assignment: Paper 1 due in the Assignment Drop Box, “The Way We See Me , submit the essay as a word doc. or pdf. Attach the worksheets with your essay.
