Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) PHRA-1309-001 Pharmaceutical Mathematics I

Prerequisites

Course Description

Pharmaceutical mathematics including reading, interpreting and solving calculation problems encountered in the preparation and distribution of drugs. Conversion of measurements within the apothecary, avoirdupois and metric systems with emphasis on the metric system of weight and volume. Topics include ratio and proportion, percentage, dilution and concentration, milliequivalent, units, intravenous flow rates and solving dosage problems.

Student Performance

(minimum competencies) After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program.
Upon completion of PHRA 1309, the student will be able to:
  1. Learn the technical terminology, facts, theories, methods, and principles associated with the mathematics of pharmacy technology.
  2. Apply the knowledge learned to concrete or particular situations in the clinical environment.
  3. Evaluate the learning experience from the perspective of the specific course objective
  4. Solve simple proportional problems
  5. Convert units of measurement in the apothecary, avoirdupois, metric, and common household systems.
  6. Determine weight/volume solutions.
  7. Solve percentage solution problems.
  8. Solve percentage and ratio strength problems.
  9. Calculate dispensing quantities from dose calculations.
  10. Calculate quantities to be admixed with intravenous solutions.
  11. Calculate drip rates for appropriate doses.
  12. Calculate pediatric doses.

Expected Student Behavior

Adult, professional behavior is expected at all times.
Academic dishonesty will result in a final grade of "F" for the course. Any attempt to cheat will be considered as academic dishonesty and will also result in a final grade of “F” for the course.
Cell phones, pagers, and any other electronic communication device must be set to vibrate/silent during class.

Grading Criteria

The final course grade will be computed as follows:
*The average of all exams equals 35% of the final grade
*The average of all homework grades will equal 35% of the final grade
*The final equals 30% of the final grade
The following grade scale applies:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
F = Less than 70%
All course work must be done in pencil.
The use of a calculator will be at the discretion of the instructor.
Illegible work will not be graded.
To receive credit on calculation problems you must show all work.
Considering that we meet once a week, students will not be allowed to make-up exams, homework, or quizzes. The student will receive a grade of ZERO for anything missed.
 
Mandatory Skills Building :  In an effort to increase retention in Pharmacy courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory skills building session with his/her instructor before taking the next exam. Before receiving a skills session, students must first schedule a time with the instructor. Mandatory sessions will be for 30 minutes.  THIS IS MANDATORY.
 
**With regard to exams only, the instructor will consider only written petitions for emergency situations and undue hardships on an individual basis. The decision of the instructor to accept or reject the petition is final. The process must be initiated by the student and occur within 48 hours of the missed class period.
