Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisite: Computer literacy and keyboarding skill of 30 wpm

Course Description

Word processing software focusing on business applications. This course is designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

Microsoft Office 365 Information:

Microsoft Office 365 is required for this course; it is your choice where you purchase the software. The subscription can be bought by the year or the month. The following link is for the official Microsoft site for purchasing either kind of subscription: Microsoft Office 365 Subscription Website

The AC bookstore does sell the software at a reasonable price if you would prefer a brick and mortar store.

 

Student Performance

This course is an introduction to preparing, formating, and managing documents; creating and enhancing tables; and creating a mail merge using word processing software.

By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the Learning Outcomes (Minimum Competencies) with a competency level based on the completion of required examinations administered under the supervision of the instructor and evaluated according to the instructor’s grading scale in the Business Technology Department.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Improve and reinforce beginning keyboarding knowledge and skills.
  2. Learn, practice, and apply word processing concepts and features.
  3. Demonstrate word processing proficiency through assessments and timed production tests

End of Course Outcomes:

Apply basic and advanced formatting skills and special functions to produce documents.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work. Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College. The faculty of the BSET Department reserves the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test by reproducing any specific section or all of the test in question. Any action that comprises the computer systems at Amarillo College, including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of "F" in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Student grades are based on the following:  Each weely assignments are due on at their posted due date.  Half credit is given if lab is turned in after the due date has passed (maximum score of 50 points).  Unit Exams may be made up only in emergency situations. If you cannot make it to an in-class assignment/exam day, arrangements may be made with the instructor pior to the date to complete the assignment/exam early. The lowest project grade will be dropped.

Your semester grade will be determined from the following criteria:

  • Training Project - 20%
  • Grader Project - 30%
  • Midterm - 15%
  • Final - 15%
  • Typing Assessments - 10%
  • Attendance and Participation - 10%

Final Grade Scale:

  • A: 90-100
  • B: 80-89
  • C: 70-79
  • D: 60-69
  • F: Below 60

Attendance

Come to class and participate in class dicussions. Attendance and participation is key in this course, with opertunity for coursework and assignments to be completed in class.

Unless prior arrangements have been made, or emergency circumstances, all abesences will be considered unexcused.
