Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) MRTS-2432-001 Human Anatomy

Prerequisites

Corequisites: MRTS 2260 and MRTS 2244

Course Description

Examination of the major systems of the human body with emphasis on the circulatory system. Human cadaver dissection in the program laboratory is included. If this course is online, it is an enhanced online course that requires students to come to Amarillo at the end of the semester for an off-site cadaver dissection lab. Students should be prepared to be in lab at their expense, M-F 8am to 5pm one week prior to final examinations. No exceptions will be made to the required lab.

Student Performance

Purpose and Goals of course:

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all the listed learning objectives with a minimum 75% competency level based on the completion of a minimum of four major exams and a comprehensive final examination. 

 

Performance / Learning Objectives (Minimum Competencies):

 

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:

  1. Define anatomical terminology and body organization sufficient to communicate effectively with fellow allied health professionals, as well as the lay public.
  2. Compare and contrast among anatomical guides, linear guides, and anatomical limits and explain selected topographical regions
  3. Compare and contrast the different categories of articulations, listing examples of each
  4. Identify and describe the major layers and accessory structures of the Integumentary system
  5. Identify the major subdivisions of the skeletal system (list and identify individual bones, their  numbers, and their important functions)
  6. Identify major and accessory organs of the digestive system (list and identify the entry to exit point through the system)
  7. Identify organs of the urinary system and trace the flow of urine through the system
  8. Identify the major organs of the male and female reproductive systems
  9. Identify the major organs of the respiratory system and trace the flow of air during inhalation and exhalation. Differentiate between internal and external respiration.
  10. Identify and describe the flow of blood through the major vessels of the cardiovascular system
  11. Identify the major structures and functions of the cardiovascular system, the blood vascular system, arterial circulation, venous system, and components of the blood
  12. Identify the major organs and vessels of the lymphatic system
  13. Identify the location and function of selected endocrine structures
  14. Discuss the major structures and subdivisions of the nervous system
  15. Locate and identify selected skeletal muscles

 

Rationale:

1. To provide adequate knowledge to relate embalming, pathology, restorative art and other related subject areas.

2. To foster healthful living habits through an understanding of the normal structure and function of human anatomical structures.

3. To develop respect for human remains.

4. To be able to facilitate communication with members of other allied health areas.

5. To promote an appreciation of and an interest in teh human body as a subject for independent study and continuing intellectual growth.

Expected Student Behavior

FOOD/DRINK:It is the policy of the Mortuary Science Department that food and drink be allowed in the classroom setting, at the instructors discretion, but food and drink are not allowed in the lab.
PHONE/PAGERS:It is the policy of the Mortuary Science Department that cell phones and pagers must be turned off or in silent mode in the classrooms,and in the Computer Labs.  No phones allowed in the cadaver lab. ABSOLUTELY, NO CALL shall be taken during a quiz, exam or lab practical.  This will result in a grade of zero on that quiz, exam, or lab practical.

 

Grievance Procedure:

If the student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Mortuary Science Program Director,( Mr. Davis), the Dean of Health Sciences (Kim Crowley), the Associate Vice-President of Academic Affairs, (Becky Burton), or the college President,( Dr. Lowery-Hart), IN THAT ORDER.

SPECIAL NOTES:

This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.  Material included is intended to provide an outline of the course and rules that the instructor will adhere to in evaluating the student's progress.  Students are expected to read the textbook before and after the material is presented in lecture.

Grading Criteria

Grades will not be curved nor will points be added to any grade.
96-100 = A
86-95 = B
75-85 = C
Below 75  = F

This grading scale is the policy of the Mortuary Science Program.

Assignments: 5% of overall grade

Lecture Exams: 30% of overall grade

Final Exam: 25% of overall grade

Lab Exams: 35% of overall grade

Attendance: 5% of overall grade

LECTURE:

1. Eight major exams 30 questions at 90 points each- consisting of multiple choice, matching, labeling diagrams, and true-false questions. 

2. WileyPlus assignments

 

LABORATORY:

The Cadaver Dissection Lab is scheduled for December 11- December 14. Time TBA. Make arrangements now. No exceptions.

1. Two lab practicals  (fill in the blank and short answer) at 100 points each.

FINAL EXAM

A comprehensive exam, consisting of multiple choice, matching, labeling diagrams and true - false questions.  This exam will be 150 - 200 questions.  The exam is designed to prepare the student for their board exams.  

 

 

Attendance

Attendance of the Lab Dec 11- Dec 14 is mandatory. If you do not attend the dissection lab, you will fail the course. Make arrangements now.
