SPRING- II - 2021:  March 22nd through May 14th:   I will be ON CAMPUS in my office in DUTTON HALL 202J Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 12:00 pm. I have a 9 am to 10:15 am course, as well as a Monday-Thursday 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm course.   Please call me so we can set up an appointment time that works for you. We can meet virtually or somewhere where we can socially distance effectively (not in my office!) I have a virtual office in COLLABORATE where we can also meet face to face if you need tutoring or just to chat, if you prefer. 
If you want to meet with me outside of those hours, I'm happy to do that. Please call me and we can set up a time to meet. As well, I'm happy to meet with you  on a FACETIME CALL or in our COLLABORATE MEETING PLACE ONLINE! I am happy to tutor you in any way I can so you can succeed in this course! Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) EXPLORING PSYCHOLOGY, (11th Edition) (2018).  David Myers and D. DEWALL.  Worth Publishers. ISBN varies on which format you order! You can get the LAUNCHPAD if you want, but you don't need it for Dr. Harding's class.

This instructor makes her own study guides for all exams. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO PRINT OFF STUDY GUIDES AVAILABLE IN YOUR AC ONLINE CLASS.  IF YOU NEED HELP ACCESSING AC ONLINE, GO TO THE 2ND FLOOR OF THE LIBRARY AND THEY WILL GET YOU SET UP.

COMPUTER ACCESS AND USE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS!  You will have all EXAMS, ASSIGNMENTS and EXAM STUDY GUIDES posted in your AC ONLINE CLASSROOM for this course.  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET ALL ASSIGNMENTS, STUDY GUIDES, AND, IF YOU LIKE, THE POWER POINT NOTES  (Power point NOTES ARE OPTIONAL, however, the EXAMS, STUDY GUIDES, and ASSIGNMENTS ARE REQUIRED!). If you do not have your OWN COMPUTER in order to access AC ONLINE, be sure and familiarize yourself with the computers available to you at the AC Library.

YOU MUST HAVE ACCESS TO A WORKING COMPUTER OR BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE AC COMPUTERS DURING THE TIMES THEY ARE OPEN.  If you don't have your own computer, use AC computers. We have computers for your use in the on campus COMPUTER LABS as well as the 4th floor of the library.  There are LOADS OF PEOPLE TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR COMPUTER and the AC CONNECT BLACKBOARD COURSES that you will be having here at AMARILLO COLLEGE!  Be sure you ask for help if you are having a difficult time.

To access AC CONNECT, you need your AC online user name and password. This class has an online courseroom that you can access by going to the AC homepage, clicking on AC ONLINE at the top of the homepage, and then putting in your user name and password when prompted.  You will see the online link to our classroom. TO DOWNLOAD AND PRINT OFF YOUR LECTURE POWERPOINT NOTES:

In order to print out your powerpoint lecture notes you will need a computer that has POWER POINT on it (as the library computers do). OPEN THE FILE YOU WANT TO PRINT OFF.   Open up the file by clicking on THE LINK, AND YOU CAN EITHER OPEN IT BY CLICKING ON THE FILE NAME OR BY WAITING FOR IT TO OPEN AUTOMATICALLY.  Once it has opened up in power point, click on PRINT from the menu list at the top of the screen. This will open your printer driver window. Since all printer driver windows are different a bit depending upon the printer you are using, look for the place where it says "PRINT WHAT"...select Handouts from the menu. Then you'll see the Handouts area light up and select 3 for number of slides per page. Also, if you have a color printer but don't want to print in color, you can select Gray Scale , rather than color and save on that color ink.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND LEARNING OUTCOMES for PSYC 2301:  These are the MINIMUM COMPETENCIES.  After studying the material presented in this course, the student will be able to do the following as evaluted by the faculty in the department/program:

  1. Define psychology and list and discuss the goals of psychology
  2. Compare and contrast the major theoretical perspectives in contemporary psychology.
  3. Explain what is meant by the scientific method and describe the various research methods.
  4. Describe the parts and functions of the nervous system.
  5. Define and discuss sensation and perception.
  6. Describe learning from the behavioral and the cognitive perspectives.
  7. Describe the functioning of sensory, short-term and long-term memory.
  8. Define motives, needs, drives, and incentives.
  9. Explain and evaluate the cognitive-appraisal theories of emotion.
  10. Discuss the nature-nurture controversy in developmental psychology.
  11. Define Piaget's concepts and outline Piaget's four stages of cognitive development, describing the major characteristics of each.
  12. Describe the major personality theories and projective and objective measures of personality.
  13. Describe the psychological disorders and the biomedical and psychological therapies that are used.
  14. Describe the social context of human behavior, emphasizing attribution theory, relationships between attitudes and action, conformity, group/cultural influences, prejudice, aggression, social conflict, attraction, altruism, and peacemaking.

Expected Student Behavior

STUDENT BEHAVIOR: What is expected of you!

IF THIS IS AN ON CAMPUS COURSE: Students are expected to attend class, to participate in class and to prepare for class lectures and discussions by reading the text and doing homework assignments. Students are expected to turn off all electronic devices (if you have a sick child, you may bring your phone and put it on vibrate). Please do not engage in side conversations during class time, texting, reading newspapers, taking naps, and any other distracting behaviors. If you miss class, you are expected to contact the instructor and/or other students in the class to get information about the class. 

FOR ALL COURSES: Since this instructor emails reminders via the AC ONLINE classroom announcement page, it's best to check into your AC ONLINE class frequently.  As well, all course notes and assignments are in the AC ONLINE classroom folders, as directed by your instructor.   It is your responsibility to get the information and printed materials, as well as take EXAMS in the AC Online classroom. If you don't have a computer, simply check the ones in the library.  You can get onto AC ONLINE from any computer anywhere!

Each student is expected to engage in academic honesty, refraining from cheating on EXAMS or plagiarism. YOUR EXAMS ARE MEANT TO BE TAKEN BY YOU!  IF THIS INSTRUCTOR LEARNS THAT YOU ARE COLLABORATING ON EXAMS, YOU WILL FAIL THE COURSE!  Plagiarism on written work will NOT be tolerated.  PLAGIARISM IS USING SOMEONE ELSES’ MATERIAL AS IF IT WERE WRITTEN OR ORIGINATED BY YOU.  If you plagiarize, you can fail the assignment and receive a 0.  Plagiarism means copying off of the internet, quoting directly without giving credit to the source, or using parts of another persons work as your own. Copying and pasting material off the internet is strictly forbidden!   YOU MUST CITE ALL SOURCES AND HAVE A REFERENCE SECTION WITH APA STYLE CITATIONS FOR YOUR PAPER! PLEASE DO NOT ENGAGE IN THIS BEHAVIOR.  We have access to a plagiarism checker program and any paper that this instructor sees is plagiarized in part or in full, will be getting a 0 on the paper, and a letter of reprimand will be filed in your academic record.  IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS AS TO WHETHER SOMETHING IS CONSIDERED PLAGIARISM, PLEASE ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR BEFORE YOU ENGAGE IN QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIOR!  AGAIN, I CONSIDER THIS A VERY SERIOUS OFFENSE AND WILL NOT TOLERATE IT!!!

FOR ONLINE COURSES AND ONLINE PORTIONS OF TRADITIONAL AND HYBRID COURSES: Students are expected to engage in appropriate "netiquette" in the ONLINE PORTIONS of this class AT ALL TIMES.  Inappropriate online behaviors, such as swearing, discussion of inappropriate issues NOT related to the course room material, or any type of intolerance or rudeness to other learners will not be tolerated and may result in having to drop this course, failing the class, or dismissal from Amarillo College. Treat others as you like to be treated and everything should be fine!

Now, having said that, please remember that this is an COLLEGE LEVEL COURSE, and we will be discussing controversial issues in an ADULT MANNER!  You are expected to act like an adult in these discussions and realize that others may think and feel differently than you on a host of issues related to sociology!  Diversity is a GREAT THING and to be APPRECIATED in this instructors opinion.  If you find something offensive that is said by another student OR your instructor, please don't hesitate to contact me and discuss this with me.  However, it's important to remember that this course is not designed to CONFIRM YOUR OWN POLITICAL or RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, but rather to get you to think about sociology, society, and people in a bigger way than you may have already been exposed to. IN THAT, YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF UNCOMFORTABLE AT TIMES, AS YOU ARE BEING REQUIRED TO STRETCH OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE! This is a part of what it means to get an education!  Obviously, learning to see the world in a different light is the goal of this course!   You are encouraged to debate others, and your instructor, in a polite BUT WELL INFORMED manner!  If you want to debate a point made, all this instructor asks, is that you bring your sources and do a good job of backing up your ideas.  In academics, we like well informed opinions!  This is KEY to analytical and creative thinking and is the hallmark of what it means to have academic freedom!  If you are not comfortable expressing your opinions in front of the class, you may obtain 10 extra credit points by WRITING a rebuttal paper.  If your instructor feels that you have backed up your point of view with sources that are informed and expert on the topic, your instructor will READ your paper to the class (with your permission of course!).  Let's enjoy the spirit of debate (and we will actually have a REAL DEBATE over the DEATH PENALTY in class...your instructor ONLY plays the time keeper and steering the discussion so that everyone is heard).  I look forward to a REAL educational experience with you all!

  • SYLLABUS QUIZ   = 10 pts
  • EMAIL your INSTRUCTOR with your phone number and times to be reached  = 10 pts
  • SERVICE PROJECT TOPIC  = 10 points
  • UNIT 1, 2, 3 and 4 READING QUIZZES for up to 10 points each = 40 points
    • NOTE: You also get half your score for extra credit…let’s say you got a 8 out of 10 points  on the quiz, you will get an 8 extra points for your extra credit!  GREAT to help your grade..study hard and you  can take these twice and gradebook takes the highest grade!
  • U-UNIT 1, 2, 3, 4 DISCUSSION or LAB worth 25 points each = 100 points
  • UNITS 1, 2, & 3 EXAMS worth 100 points each (drop lowest score) =200 points
 

NOTE: you get to drop lowest exam of the Units 1, 2 and 3 exams or if you miss an exam it is your drop!  UNIT 4 EXAM is required for everyone!  No drops on Unit 4!

As well, you get two attempts on the first exam but all other exams have one attempt only!

 

 ~UNIT 4 FINAL EXAM (REQUIRED FOR ELVERYONE NO DROPS) over Unit 4  (required!)  = 100 pts

  • REMEMBER..you must take this exam!

~ SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY QUESTIONS IN TEMPLATE:  =  100 points

  • EXTRA CREDITEXTRA CREDIT: for this semester, you can get up to 40 points on your reading quizzes. You can also donate food or gift cards or cash to the AC PANTRY or to your local food bank for the remaining points. Let’s say you got 30 points on your 4 reading quizzes, you could donate another $10.00 for a total of 40 points.  NOTE: STUDY HARD FOR YOUR READING QUIZZES! You get two attempts on all reading quizzes.

"90% of Success is SHOWING UP":  While it may be tempting to skip classes, know that the #1 factor linked with good grades IS class attendance.

If this is an online course, you will do best if you are working IN THE ONLINE CLASSROOM at least 2 to 5 times a week!  People who end up doing poorly rarely show up in the classroom. Check the announcements and emails daily and be working on your projects!  Set up a study schedule for yourself that is reasonable and works! This way you’ll cross the finish line.

How this ONLINE CLASS is STRUCTURED: How to navigate your classroom

  1. Use your login and password to see your list of courses in AC CONNECT, and select this course. This will take you to the HOMEPAGE.
  2. You will see the COURSE MENU to the LEFT OF YOUR HOMEPAGE. Click on these links to navigate to your course materials.   The class has “FOLDERS” that contain your course materials including FOUR UNITS with folders for your power point lecture notes, handouts, videos, as well as an EXAM FOLDER for each unit. The exam folder is where you can get your study guide, and you’re your quizzes and exams.  You will see the following in the menu list to the left of the screen:

    1. Your course CALENDAR: Print off the calendar and view the online calendar for this course (that’s this document).
    2. Your online SYLLABUS and SYLLABUS QUIZ: View your course syllabus online and TAKE THE REQUIRED QUIZ by the date on your calendar. IT IS REQUIRED for everyone to be counted on the census.       5. NOTE: LAB and/or-DISCUSSION FOLDER:  For each unit, you will have a LAB or DISCUSSION due. Follow the instructions for each unit for that LAB. You will see the folder.  For example: Unit 1 is a DISCUSSION to INTRODUCE yourself to the class, and a discussion about the SECRETS of the WILD CHILD movie that you watched and the concept of NATURE VS NURTURE.   You will share a dream that you had and what you think it means too! In UNIT 2 you will be putting UPLOADING your LEARNING LAB into the DROP BOX, in the UNIT 3 LAB area you will have a SHORT PERSONALITY-TYPE CAREER LAB to upload into the drop box. For UNIT 4 you will have a “DIAGNOSIS LAB DUE that will be done in a template as well that you will upload into the DROP BOX.  You may discuss these with other members of your class.  In Unit 1 DISCUSSION be sure you RESPOND to at least one other student regarding their discussion.  Be sure you help each other as you can with your LABS…feel free to email, call each other or meet in the COLLABORATE SPACE together to study for these labs and exams! HELP EACH OTHER GUYS!

In the menu list you will also see SEND EMAIL, MY GRADES (where you can see your grades for the course, BLACKBOARD HELP, LINK to the WRITER’S CORNER for help with your discussions and papers.   You will also find the link to the COURSE SURVEYS, etc. that will help you to evaluate your instructor and SMART TUTORING link, for help if you need it.  Use your resources as you need to!
  5. WE WILL ALSO HAVE SEVERAL COLLABORATE MEETINGS where you can attend live. I will be discussing the BRAIN TRAINER MANUAL and TRIUNE BRAIN MODEL in UNIT 1, as well as drug addiction and NEUROTRANSMITTERS.  In UNIT 2 we will have a live session over the LEARNING LAB and LEARNING THEORY. In UNIT 4 we will have a similar live session for the UNIT 4 lab.  Again, make every attempt to attend the COLLABORATE MEETING either by computer and camera or by your phone. This will help you with those labs!  YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE RECORDINGS OF THE SESSION IN THE COLLABORATE AREA OF YOUR CLASS!

For this course, you will be completing the following in the next 8 weeks

  • CLASS MEETINGS: I will be lecturing a few times over the Brain Trainer Manual and the Learning Lab and the Diagnosis Lab.   You can attend the LECTURE LIVE in COLLABORATE or you can listen to the recording! These 3 areas are difficult for students without help, so be sure you take some time to listen!
  • You will have 4 COURSE UNITS including:
    • Unit 1 comprised of chapters 1, 2, 3, and 6, as well as the BRAIN TRAINER MANUAL, and the Secrets of Wild Child and short videos, theory handout, methods of science in development research.  You will have a UNIT 1 INTRODUCTION Discussion as well, which is a college level essay!
    • Unit 2 comprised of chapters 4, 5, 7 and 8 and the LOVE AND LOGIC MOVIE. You will also have some shorter videos and a UNIT 2 LAB with a DREAM LAB and LEARNING LAB: You will be putting your answers to the LABS in your handout in the DROP BOX for a grade. Feel free to email each other or help each other with the LEARNING LAB! 
    • Unit 3 comprised of chapters 10, 11 and 13, and you will take a PERSONALITY TEST along with a LAB over your career choices based on personality.  You will save the template with that short lab in it and upload it into the UNIT 3 LAB DROP BOX.
    • Unit 4 comprised of chapters 12, 14, & 15, as well as a few comprehensive questions over other units of major concepts on the exam. You will have a film to watch called the HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS for chapter 12 and you will have a LAB-DISCUSSION over DIAGNOSIS of mental disorders!  You can help each other on this lab. You will put your answers to the diagnosis in the LAB DROP BOX.  Again, feel free to help each other with the diagnosis!
  • 1 SYLLABUS QUIZ Required (10 pts). Failure to take this quiz will mean you are withdrawn from the class! 
  • 1 REQUIRED EMAIL from your BLACKBOARD CLASSROOM EMAIL to your instructor with your phone number on it, so that she can reach you (10 points).  Do not email me outside the classroom..it needs to be the EMAIL in the CLASS that’s on the MENU LIST that says SEND EMAIL! Select to INSTRUCTORS IN THE COURSE. 
  • 1 TOPIC: You need to submit 1 sentence in the TOPIC DROP BOX regarding your selected SOCIAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEM and the AGENCY-PROGRAM that you are interested in. Follow the STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTION SHEET that is in the COMMON ASSESSMENT SERVICE LEARNING ESSAY FOLDER in STEP 1.  (10 points)
  • 4 UNIT LAB-DISCUSSIONS (25 points each = 100 points): 
    • Unit 1 Discussion is over the Secrets of the Wild Child movie and the concept of Nature vs Nurture, as well as over DREAMS: you will report one of your dreams and what you think it means! 
    • Unit 2 LAB is over the Love and Logic movie and then you will put your answers to the LEARNING LAB tin the template provided and upload those in your drop box.  
    • Unit 3 LAB: You will take a personality quiz and then fill out questions in a TEMPLATE I provide for you about the CAREERS that are most compatible with your REPORTED PERSONALITY TYPE, and how these line up with your chosen career path here at AC.  Upload in the drop box.
    • Unit 4 LAB: You will watch a movie entitled THE HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS and comment on that film.  As well, you will put your answers to the DIAGNOSIS LAB in the DROP BOX. Just download your template, type in your answers in the spaces provided and the save it. UPLOAD it into your drop box.
  • 4 REQUIRED READING QUIZZES with EXTRA CREDIT: These four 10 point quizzes will be over your chapter readings for each unit.  NOTE: THEY ARE REQUIRED and MAY NOT BE DROPPED. You also will get up to 10 extra credit points for each quiz. If you get an 8 out of 10 points on the quiz, then you will get 8 extra credit points on your class.  (40 points possible and up to 40 extra credit points)
  • 4 UNIT EXAMS including Unit 1, 2, 3 and 4 EXAMS, covering all chapters in the unit and all films, handouts (anything that says it's required will be on your exam). 
    • Exams will have 40 to 50 questions, be timed and have a final closing due date. If you miss an exam in UNITS 1, 2, or 3, it's a 0 and that is the exam that will be dropped. UNIT 4 exam is required!
    • EXAM 1 covers chapters 1, 2,  3 and 6, all films and the theory handout. 
    • Unit 2 Exam covers chapters 4, 5,  7 and the MEMORY BOOKLET covering ch 8, Love and Logic film. 
    • Unit 3 exam covers chapters 10, 11 and 13  along with the PERSONALITY TEST you will take and the PERSONALITY THEORY HANDOUT, as well as any short videos you watched that say required!
    • Unit 4 EXAM covers chapter 12 over social psychology and the HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENT, along with Chapters 14 and 15 and handouts you are given over therapy and diagnosis. 
    • NOTE: THE FIRST EXAM has two attempts, but the other 3 EXAMS allow only ONE ATTEMPT, so be ready to take the exam when it opens! All exams have a due date. If you miss the exam, it's a 0. 
    • This course allows you to drop the lowest of your first THREE EXAMS in UNITS 1, 2 or 3.  However, YOU MUST TAKE THE LAST EXAM for UNIT 4 as it includes a few COMPREHENSIVE questions over major course concepts, as well as the last three chapters.   YOU MUST TAKE THE UNIT 4 FINAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM!   A TOTAL of 300 points in exams.
  • 1 SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY QUESTIONS PAPER worth 100 points.
    • You will consider a social problem or psychological problem that is interesting to you (Like homelessness, hunger, depression or child abuse).  Then you will decide on an agency or program in the AMARILLO VOLUNTEER MATCH listings or other resources that are in the SERVICE PROJECT FOLDER area under STEP 3, to find an agency, program that you might want to volunteer at in the future (you are not required to volunteer now due to COVID-19).  You can also use an agency that you have already volunteered at for your topic!
    • Type one sentence in the TOPIC DROP BOX like, “I’m interested in child abuse and the agency I’ll be contacting and writing about is FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES” or “I have volunteered with BIG BROTHER BIG SISTERS and I’m interesting in the issue of troubled children.”
    • Then, you will use the TEMPLATE PROVIDED for you to WRITE FOUR ESSAY QUESTIONS about the social problem and the AGENCY-PROGRAM you are interested in or have volunteered at. You will use the TEXTBOOK to cite references related to this issue in QUESTION #3. Question #5 is a 5 part question over graphs and data that you will need to complete.
    • THIS ESSAY should be well edited. YOU MAY GO TO THE WRITER’S CORNER (or contact them by phone or email) for a tutoring session to help with your essay. This will give you an additional 10 points on your essay and can be helpful if you aren’t a strong writer. Be sure to remind your tutor to contact your instructor by emailing your TUTORING REPORT so I can give you your extra points. This is NOT REQUIRED, but can help your grade again.

  • EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES: You may earn UP TO, but NOT MORE THAN 40 extra credit points.  You do this by taking the REQUIRED READING QUIZZES in each unit. You get up to 10 points on each quiz, and then whatever your score is, you get that in extra credit as well. YOU GET TWO SCORES!
  • AS well, if you want, you can donate food, money or a gift card to the AC PANTRY or YOUR LOCAL FOOD BANK. It’s 1 point per $1.00 donation.  NOTE: Let’s say you got a total of 30 points on your four reading quizzes.  Then you could donate another $10.00 of food for the remaining 10 points extra credit.     2. I have sent you an email with all your handouts for UNIT 1, so you can print those off or save them to your computer for viewing.  They are also online in UNIT 1 Folders. Remember, your study guides for each exam are in the EXAM FOLDER in each unit, and the power point lecture notes and handouts are in the UNIT NOTES FOLDER. You will find the required videos in the REQUIRED VIDEOS folder, and the DISCUSSION-LABS in the DISCUSSION-LAB FOLDER! Everything is marked and there is an explanation for every folder!  Be sure you pay attention to your calendar for all due dates!!
    3. BY MONDAY OF WEEK 2: Review your online SYLLABUS online and take the REQUIRED SYLLABUS QUIZ (10 pts) By MONDAY, 11:55 pm in order to be counted as attending on the census.     5. With your study guide Read Ch 1, 2 , the BRAIN TRAINER MANUAL (your exam will be over the BT MANUAL rather than Chapter 2 in the book) You will also want to review the WHY WE NEED SCIENCE notes and go over the SCIENCE LAB and the ANSWER SHEET for it, the THEORY HANDOUT. 
    6. Read your UNIT 1 Discussion questions, which you will find in UNIT 1 DISCUSSION FOLDER.  Then, read chapter 1 and 2 and the information on NATURE and NURTURE.  Then, watch the SECRETS OF THE WILD CHILD online in the UNIT 1.   Begin to prepare for the UNIT 1 discussion! You will also be reporting a dream (we discuss dreams next week) and sharing with the class what you think it means! COOL!  This movie shows you many of the things they are talking about in these two chapters over NATURE AND NURTURE!

  •  WEEK 2: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd to SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8th:  Unit 1: Finish BRAIN TRAINER MANUAL, READ Chapter 3 and 6 (selected readings on CH 6), and watch PAY ATTENTION TO THIS, do your UNIT 1 discussion and UNIT 1 READING QUIZ by SUNDAY, and prepare for exam for unit 1 that’s on MONDAY of WEEK 3! Lots to do
    1. Take your syllabus quiz and emai your instructor by MONDAY NIGHT! Required to be counted as attending the course on the census. Failure to take this quiz will result in your being withdrawn from the class!
    2. BY THURSDAY, select a social or psychological problem of interest to you and find an agency-program that deals with these things that you might want to volunteer at in the future..or do an agency-program that you already volunteered at, if that’s appropriate.
    3. Finish working on your study guide over the BRAIN TRAINER MANUAL. Pay particular attention to the TRIUNE BRAIN MODEL and the NEUROTRANSMITTER charts! Lots of questions over this, and on chapter 3 related to the DRUGS and how they mimic the neurotransmitters.
    4. Fill out your study guide as you read chapter 3 (all of it) & CHAPTER 6 pages 189 to 215 only.
    5. Watch Pay Attention to This for chapters 3 and 6.
    6. Due SUNDAY by 11:55 pm:  Complete your UNIT 1 LAB-DISCUSSION with an introduction of yourself in Paragraph 1, comments about the WILD CHILD movie and whether you think Genie was born that way or made that way in Paragraph 2.  In Paragraph 3 give your own personal example of NATURE and NURTURE (mine is that my family genes make me prone to diabetes on both sides of my family but I work out and watch what I eat so I’m not diabetic. I do have 3 out of 4 blood siblings who are!  Finally in Paragraph 4, write down a dream of yours and what you think it meant. Ask yourself what was going on at the time when you had it! What emotions did you feel in the dream.  What symbols were there (take a look at the dream dictionary online in UNIT 1.  RESPOND To at least one other students dreams as to what you think they mean!
    7. SUNDAY by 11:55 pm: Take the UNIT 1 REQUIRED READING QUIZ. Remember, you have two attempts and you get up to 10 earned points and then you get up to 10 extra credit points for this quiz!  Also, some of the test questions will be on the quiz, so try to take it twice! You’ll do better and you may get a heads up for the exam.  The extra credit points can only help you, not hurt you!
    8. MONDAY of WEEK 3 by 11:55 pm: Take the REQUIRED UNIT 1 EXAM. You get two attempts on this exam! Remember you get to drop your lowest of the first 3 exams. UNIT 4 Exam is required for everyone! If you do poorly on an exam or miss an exam, don’t worry, you can use that as a drop. However, UNIT 4 Exam has to be taken.

HOMEWORK for WEEK 3:  TAKE EXAM 1, Unit 4 opens over chapters 4 and 5, and 7 and the MEMORY BOOKLET that summarizes chapter 8. As well, you will have a handout over the various DEVELOPMENTAL THEORISTS that we use to talk about child development. You will also watch the PARENTING in the 90’s movie with Dr. Foster Cline using the LOVE and LOGIC method of parenting.

  • WEEK 3: Monday NOVEMBER 9th to Sunday NOVEMBER 15th:  UNIT 2 begins so read chapters 4 and 5 for this week. Also, fill out your study guide as you read.  Read your UNIT 2 Lab questions on the LEARNING LAB. I will have a Collaborate session for you over this that you can either attend in person or you can listen to the recording. This will help you with LEARNING THEORY, which is hard for people!
  1. TAKE UNIT 1 EXAM By 11:55 pm. You have two attempts on this exam only! Gradebook takes the highest score automatically.
  2. Print off or view your study guide and take a look at the power point lecture notes for chapters 4 and 5 as you read. 
  3. Watch the PARENTING in the 90’s movie with Dr. Cline over LOVE AND LOGIC, and there are ppt notes over that movie you can view as well!
  • HOMEWORK for Week 4: Save the LEARNING LAB to your computer and type in the answers after reading chapters 6.  You will be putting your answers in the UNIT 3 LAB-DISCUSSION. Start filling out your study guide on Chapter 6 ad the MEMORY BOOKLET for Chapter 7.

  • WEEK 4: Monday NPOVEMBER 16th to NOVEMBER 22nd:  UNIT 2 continues with chapters 7 and the MEMORY BOOKLET for chapter 8.  Do your UNIT 2 LEARNING LAB and you will be putting those answers into your UNIT 2 LAB-DISCUSSION area.
    1. READ CHAPTER 6 on LEARNING and WORK ON YOUR UNIT 2 LAB at you work through this and be sure you attend the COLLABORATE MEETING LECTURE SCHEDULED to go over the LEARNING LAB. If you cannot make it, then please be sure you listen to the recording to help you with LEARNING THEORY!
  1. Read chapters 7 and the MEMORY BOOKLET over chapter 8.  Fill out your study guide.

  • WEEK 5: Monday NOVEMBER 23rd to SUNDAY NOVEMBER 29th:  Happy THANKSGIVING and NOTHING IS DUE until WEEK 6!   Unit 3 opens over Chapters 10, 11 and 13 and you will complete the UNIT 3 LAB over Personality & Career Choices.  ALSO, YOUR SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY WILL BE DUE WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2nd in WEEK 6!  GET ON IT NOW!
  1. Look at your UNIT 3 LAB over PERSONALITY and CAREER CHOICES FOLDER and follow the steps to do the PERSONALITY TEST and then WRITE UP THE LAB: You have a whole folder about this.  Follow the instructions.
    1. NOTE: You will type ALL the answers to your LAB in the TEMPLATE AND THE SPACES PROVIDED. Do not DELETE ANYTHING in your LAB. Save your answers to the TEMPLATE on your computer, and then UPLOAD it into the DROP BOX where you will submit it by SATURDAY in WEEK 6. Be sure you edit your work and use COMPLETE SENTENCES in your answers!
    2. Take the PERSONALITY TEST and get your FOUR LETTER CODE (It will be something like ENFP or ISTJ, as examples).  Copy and paste the comments in the TEST about your PERSONALITY TYPE into the space provided in the TEMPLATE.
    3. Copy the various professions that people with your personality type seem to do well at and PASTE those into the TEMPLATE in the space provided. Then, answer the REST OF THE QUESTIONS about your career path here at AC and how this aligns with these professions in your assessment!  Are you on track?? Are there other careers you might think about?  This is worth 25 points!
  2. Fill out your study guide as your read Chapter 10 over motivation and emotion, and start Chapter 11 over stress.  Watch the film with Dr. Bob Sapolsky over stress.
  3. BY WEDNESDAY or WEEK 6 11:55 pm: YOUR SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY IS DUE! NO LATE WORK except in EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES.

TURN IN YOUR SERVICE PROJECT and your UNIT 3 PERSONALITY-CAREER LAB. Take your READING QUIZ and prepare for UNIT 3 EXAM on MONDAY of WEEK 7.
    1. BY WEDNESDAY, 11:55 pm:  UPLOAD YOUR SERVICE PROJECTE ESSAY QUESTIONS IN THE SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY DROP BOX IN THE SERVICE PROJECT FOLDER in STEP #6. Be sure you edit it well.

HOMEWORK for WEEK 7:  UNIT 4 opens on Monday.  You will have lots of handouts for our last section. Read chapter 12 over Social psychology for this week and watch the movie: THE HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS. Be sure you go over your UNIT 4 DISCUSSION-LAB questions so you can consider these as your watch the movie.

  • WEEK 7: Monday, DECEMBER 7th to SNDAY DECEMBER 13th: Take UNIT 3 EXAM. UNIT 4 opens over chapters 12, 14 and 15, along with all the required handouts and the UNIT 4 Lab-Discussion over the HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS film and the DIAGNOSIS LAB. Remember that UNIT 4 EXAM is required for everyone! If you miss the last exam, you get a 0 on it…no drops!
    1. This week save your study guide on your computer or print it off and use it to study. THE UNIT 4 HANDOUTS are very IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO HAVE to do the LAB and to do well on the exam! I suggest you print them off!
    2. Read your Unit 4 Lab-Discussion questions and read chapter 12 over social psychology.   Watch the HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS MOVIE.  You will answer a couple of questions on UNIT 4 LAB over this movie as well.
    3. Read chapter 14 and go over all the handouts over ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY.  Print off or save your UNIT 4 DIAGNOSIS LAB on your computer. You will upload your 5 Axis Diagnosis answers in the UNIT 4 LAB-DISCUSSION. You can help each other with this and email one another to get input as to your answers!!!!  
    4. I will be doing a COLLABORATE MEETING OVER UNIT 4 CHAPTER 14 and 15. You should make every attempt to attend or WATCH THE RECORDING OF IT!
    1. Be filling out your study guide for the REQUIRED UNIT 4 EXAM!  You will be using your textbook, handouts, labs and even our Powerpoint notes to fill out your guide! YOU CAN DO IT…we are almost there!

  • WEEK 8: Monday, DECEMBER 14th to FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18th by 8:00 am: This week in Unit 4 we finish up Chapter 14 and read Chapter 15 over THERAPY. There are lots of handouts over various therapies that might be useful.  Finish your LAB by Wednesday 11:55 pm and take your UNIT 4 READING QUIZ by THURSDAY 11:55 pm, and UNIT 4 EXAM by FRIDAY MORNING. Remember Unit 4 exam is required for everyone!   UNIT 4 EXAM is due by FRIDAY morning, 8:00 am at which time the class is closed!
    1. Finish up chapter 14 and do your diagnosis lab. UPLOAD YOUR TEMPLATE in the DROP BOX!  YOU ARE DONE WITH YOUR LABS!
    2.  Read Chapter 15 and look over all the handouts and notes regarding the different types of therapies.

Keep up with your grades. To see your grades and any feedback from me on your assignments (discussions and your service project essay) do the following:

  1. Click on MY GRADES in the MENU list to the left of your COURSE HOMEPAGE online!
  2. Go down the list of items to find the ASSIGNMENT or TEST, etc that you want to look at. It will show you your grade there.
  3. To view comments from your instructor, click on COMMENTS. To view the grade scoring system (CALLED A RUBRIC), click on VIEW RUBRIC.  You will want to view this when you look at your SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY!  Discussions will have comments but no rubric. Be sure you read comments about your work. APPLY FEEDBACK SUGGESTIONS! This will help your grades.
  4. Keeping up with your grades can inspire you to work harder and find better ways to study!
     

A FEW TIPS TO SUCCEED IN ONLINE and ON CAMPUS COURSES

  • We know a lot about what allows students to succeed in college courses! Here are a few tips for you to consider:
    • FOLLOW YOUR CALENDAR and have some type of TIME MANAGEMENT SYSTEM that reminds you of due dates!  I send out reminders to your email, but you should be in the habit of GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. Develop something that works for you!  Our technology gives us a natural advantage in that!
    • WORK AHEAD: In this class, units will be opened early. WORK AHEAD. Get things done early in the class!  DO YOUR SERVICE HOURS AND WRITE YOUR ESSAY BY WEEK 3!  I promise PROCRASTINATION IS THE WORST STRATEGY YOU CAN HAVE FOR COLLEGE LEVEL CLASSES and ONLINE COURSES ESPECIALLY! 
    • BE THERE! CHECK IN: Go online, if this is an online course, at least 2 to 3 times a week.  Studies show that people, who frequent their online classes, do better than those that check in infrequently.  PRETEND THIS IS A REAL CLASS, even if it's "VIRTUAL"!  If this is an on campus course, BE IN CLASS!  Attendance and success in the class are POSITIVELY RELATED! The better the attendance, the better the grade!
    • NEW TERRITORY: Forget how you studied in high school! If you are new to college, throw away your "HIGH SCHOOL ROAD MAP".  It won't work here!  It takes some time to get these skills!  We can help you!  We want you to be successful and achieve your DREAMS!
    • LOTS OF FOLKS WANT TO HELP: Use our resources including our WRITER'S CORNER, COUNSELING SERVICES, and RESOURCE CENTER (if you need social services, we have somebody to help you with all that with the AC PANTRY and other things!), and FINANCIAL AID. 
    • HELP WITH BLACKBOARD:  If you do not understand HOW TO USE BLACKBOARD, go to the WARE CENTER on WASHINGTON STREET CAMPUS and get with the SUPPORT CENTER folks who will TEACH YOU HOW TO DO THIS!  You have to know how to access things to be successful!  We have lots of people to help you with this!
    • BE PERSISTENT!  Only 1 in 4 AMERICAN ADULTS has a college education. This is not meant to be easy!  It's hard and it takes building skills, and STICKING TO IT!  YOU CAN DO IT1

TO REVIEW YOUR EXAMS: Click on MY GRADES in the menu tab, scroll down and select the quiz or exam and click to review! You can see what you missed AFTER THE FINAL DUE DATE and TIME ONLY! Sorry, but I can’t open exams between because there was too much cheating going on!

  In order to see your instructor's comments on your work (such as your discussions and your paper), GO TO "MY GRADES" tab in the menu to the left of your BLACKBOARD CLASSROOM SCREEN.  Find the item you want to look at in the LIST (they are not necessarily in order...sorry!).  Click on that and you will see a place that says RUBRIC and COMMENTS.  Click on comments to see anything your instructor has said, and click on RUBRIC to view the rubric grading system and how your instructor graded you.  PLEASE...this instructor SPENDS A LOT OF TIME to give you CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK...USE IT and make corrections accordingly! If you keep making the same error time and again, YOUR GRADES WILL CONTINUE TO GO DOWN!  I expect you to USE THE FEEDBACK I GIVE YOU TO BECOME A BETTER STUDENT and to IMPROVE IN YOUR SCHOOL WORK!
