Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisites

Course Description

A survey of the social, political, economic, cultural and intellectual history of the United States from the Civil War/Reconstruction era to the present. United States History II examines industrialization, immigration, world wars, the Great Depression, Cold War and post-Cold War eras. Themes that may be addressed in United States History II include: American culture, religion, civil and human rights, technological change, economic change, immigration and migration, urbanization and suburbanization, the expansion of the federal government and the study of U.S. foreign policy.

Expected Student Behavior

Students will follow all Amarillo College policies and procedures, particularly those relating to academic integrity and personal conduct. Especially remember to:

  • Be engaged in class via discussion and questions
  • Speak respectfully at all times
  • Do your own work 
  • Respect the desire of others to learn 
  • Properly cite your work, no plagiarism
  • Keep cell phones put away
  • When we use technology in class, stay on task on the websites we work from
  • Technical problems will not be accepted as reasons for allowing late work

Students will be responsible for taking the proper steps to solve technical problems.

Email provides the best way to communicate with the teacher. Mr. Bryant will be checking his email at least once per day usually after 4:30. Responses may take up to 24 hours. In case you need to notify me for aquicker response email me at tlbryant822@gmail.com

Grading Criteria

Exams will count for 60% of the final grade . Students will take 4 one-hour in class exams. No exemptions will be granted for the final exam. The lowest score among the first 2 exams will be dropped. Tests will consist of multiple choice items, and short answer written responses. Should you be absent for an exam (and I highly encourage you to be present for exams) you have one week to set an appointment to make it up and this will be difficult to arrange given that we must find a time for your schedule and mine to correspond. Also, make up exams will be harder since it cannot be the same as given on the scheduled day. If you miss one of the first two exams, that will be your dropped grade.

Exam dates: April 9, April 21, May 5, May 21

Students will earn 10% of their grade through attendance and classroom participation in activities and discussions.

Students will  15% of their grade from the paper that will be assigned. Details will be announced in class.

Students will 15% of their grade from participation in 2 Discussion Board assignments.

All work will be graded on the following scale: 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 =C, 60-69 = D, less than 60 = F

Extra Credit Assignments will not be made.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken and counts toward your grade. One absence will be excused. Success in the course requires attendance. Responsibility to drop the course resides with the student if you decide to stop attending.

Adjustment due to switching to online (added 4/2/2020)- 

If you have trouble joining, staying connected, or some other problem, your attendance will still be granted. An absence will be counted if you miss class and do not contact me within 24 hours. Please avoid abusing this relaxation of attendance policy.

 

Being in contact with me via email if you have problems will also be recognized as participation and attendance.

 

Responding to the Pear Deck, commenting on the chat feature, and emailing will all count as participation.

This class will consist of lecture, discussion, and analyzing primary sources in the manner of a historian. Success in the class depends on learning the content, participating in discussion, and demonstrating satisfactory implementation of historical thinking skills. The syllabus may be edited for inconsistencies and contingencies unforeseen at this time.
