Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.)   1. TEXTBOOK:   Reality Through the Arts, by Dennis Sporre, (Pearson, Prentice Hall) Eighth Edition there are a few books on reserve at the AC Library, Washington Campus. The books can only be used at the library and cannot be checked out. Books are available for purchase, rental at Amarillo College Bookstore. The textbook is required

 

 

Supplies

COURSE MATERIALS: Textbook, dictionary, pens, pencils, notebook paper or notebook for note taking, access to a computer to complete discussions, assignments and review class material. Access to internet and library materials are necessary for successful completion of this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

HUMA 1301 Introduction to Humanities I This stand-alone course is an interdisciplinary survey of cultures focusing on the philosophical and aesthetic factors in human values with an emphasis on the historical development of the individual and society and the need to create.

 

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. Demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities.
2. Articulate how these works express the values of the individual and society within an historical and social context.
3. Articulate an informed personal response and critically analyze works in the arts and humanities.
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the influence of literature, philosophy, and the arts on cultural experiences.
5. Demonstrate an awareness of the creative process and why humans create

Expected Student Behavior

Academic Honesty: All matters of academic dishonesty including plagiarism (the act of copying and pasting information from one source and inserting into a paper without proper citation, rewriting information from another source and inserting into a paper without proper citation, copying and rewriting from another student’s work and using as your own), collusion, fabrication, cheating etc. will result in a failing grade for the assignment in question.

All violations will be forwarded to the proper college authorities for review. Any form of disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

Students who cheat, copy, or plagiarize any of the required essays, assignments and analyses will receive a zero (0) for the assignment and the Final Grade for the course will be reduced by one letter grade (A to B, B to C, C to D, D to F)

Students who violate the Academic Honesty will not be allowed to complete any extra- credit to improve the final grade.

Online Student Behavior: All students are expected to be polite and considerate when posting opinions and thoughts in the Discussion Forum. The Online class is not a location where students may post aggressive, insulting, or inappropriate use of language. Any student who violates the required Student Behavior (as stated and in the AC Student Handbook) will result in a failing grade for the course.

Policy Concerning Sensitive Subject Matter: In the college experience, students encounter diverse views and new subject matter, which expand their knowledge and perspective. In all Humanities or Philosophy courses, we might observe, read and discuss some works with subject matter that could include (but not limited to) death, violence, sexuality, race potentially offensive language, and political or religious viewpoints different from your own. If any sensitive subject matter is a concern for you, please arrange a meeting with the instructor.

Grading Criteria

Grading Criteria: It is the student’s responsibility to complete all assigned tasks by the specified due date. Individual assignments are evaluated by the instructor.  Incomplete assignments, analyses, participation and attendance concerns will be reported to specific department chairs, division chairs, and Associate Vice President of Instruction. 

Tutoring Policy: If a student scores below 70% on an exam or writing assignment, he or she will be required to attend tutoring per the instructor's directions before being allowed to complete the next assigned work.

Grading Schema: 
89.50 – 100 A
79.50 – 89.49 B
69.50 – 79.49 C
59.50 – 69.49 D
00.00 – 59.49 F  

Attendance - worth 5% of final grade, taken daily in zoom sessions

Discussion Forums – worth 45% of final grade, the lowest discussion grade is dropped from the average

Assignments – worth 50% of the final grade; the Introduction test, the midterm quiz, midterm essay, the final quiz and final essay are averaged together.

One extra-credit analysis essay will be offered as a substation for one exam or essay for unit 1. Unit 2 exam and essay are excluded from the extra-credit. Any assignment plagiarized will receive a zero and not be eligible for extra-credit. The extra-credit analysis essay requirements will be similar to the essay for unit 1.


 

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR ONLINE:
It is the student’s responsibility to access the course online and complete all Assignments, Analyses, Quizzes, Discussion Forums and Essays according to the course calendar. Students are expected to access the online course every day to complete all requirements.

First Graded Discussion and or Assignment must be completed before the Census date 11/02/2020, to avoid an automatic withdrawal from the course.
NOTE:
Visual attendance is required during Zoom class meetings to be counted as participating. Students must show faces for attendance. Attendance will be taken by instructor at beginning and end of class.
Final Date to Withdraw from Course without a Failing Grade: 12/09/2020

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS:

The grade you will receive will be determined by your completion of the Assignments, Analyses, Quizzes and Discussion Forums.

•Completion of Blackboard Student Help tutorial found on the AC Connect public announcement (for students unfamiliar with the online basics).

•Chapter Assignments, Analyses, Essays, Chapter Quizzes, and Discussion Forums will be averaged for the Final Grade.

Accessing AC Connect:

It is the responsibility of the student to check email messages, announcements and the course using AC Connect. Students will submit all assignments using Blackboard unless noted on the assignment or by the instructor.

Additional Information

It is important to complete all Discussion Forums, Exams and Essays by the due dates; no extra credit will be offered to help improve a student’s grade.

Tutoring Policy: If a student scores below 70% on an exam or writing assignment, he or she will be required to attend tutoring per the instructor's directions before being allowed to complete the next assigned work.

Students are responsible and encouraged to seek help with any problems using Blackboard, understanding assignment due dates and accessing secondary computers if personal computers are not performing.

Computers can be used in the AC Library, the Computer Lab, and the Amarillo Public Library or any public library in your vicinity.
