Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) ENGL-1302-003 Composition II

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: ENGL 1301

Course Description

Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions.

Department Expectations

STUDENT PRINTING PROCEDURES

For students to put money on their account, they must go to this website https://acprinthub.actx.edu/myprintcenter/ and either use PayPal account or their credit/debit card to add money, or they can go to the Student Services building to add money with credit/debit or with cash. Neither Writers’ Corner or the Writing Lab can add money to the account.

However, if the students need help adding money to their account, we can help them do that here in the lab. All students are responsible for adding money to their own account. But students need to have money on their own account in order to print anywhere on campus.

English Department Plagiarism Policy (Revised Spring, 2013):

The English Department takes plagiarism seriously.

Plagiarism is defined as the following:  the use of someone else’s exact words that are neither quoted nor cited; paraphrasing someone else’s words without citing them; or using someone else’s research without citing it.

Student plagiarism in the Amarillo College English Department is internally tracked.  To clarify, records will be kept in the Department of those students who have plagiarized.  At the beginning of each new semester, the names of students who plagiarized the previous semester will be sent to all English Department faculty. 

Plagiarism may receive a penalty of a zero.  A subsequent infraction will be deemed a reason for expulsion from the class. At this point, the case will be referred to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

Note: Self-plagiarism will be discussed with the class by each instructor and infractions for such are left up to the individual instructor’s discretion.

Textbooks

NO TEXTBOOKS REQUIRED.  ALL COURSE MATERIAL WILL BE PROVIDED IN BLACKBOARD.

Supplies

Access to a computer, Internet connection, and word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs. You will also need to download Zoom (preferably on a computer or tablet) and create a free account.  You will need to join Zoom class meetings with the first name and last name reflected on our class roll so that you get credit for attending class.

2. Develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary sources within focused academic arguments, including one or more research-based essays.

5. Apply the conventions of style manuals for specific academic disciplines (e.g., APA, CMS, MLA, etc.)

 

 

ONLINE / CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS

We will NOT meet in person this semester.  This class will be taught online in Blackboard and through Zoom class meetings.

PAPERS:

Students will have three major writing assignments--a short research assignment, a research essay, and a major research paper.  The research essay and major research paper must be typed double-spaced, and follow MLA style guidelines (8th edition).  Reputable outside sources are required for each writing assignment.  NOTE: Students will be allowed to turn in one writing assignment (final copy) late without penalty. However, all other writing assignments must be turned in on time or there will be late point deductions.  I will be available through Zoom meetings and in-person office hours to help students with research, writing, and citing sources.

Expected Student Behavior

ENGLISH DEPT. TUTORING POLICY

If a student scores below 70% on an exam or writing assignment, he or she will be required to attend tutoring per the instructor’s directions before being allowed to complete the next assigned work.

90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, Below 60 = F

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend every scheduled class. NOTE: We do NOT meet in person this semester.  In this tech-supported hybrid class, students are expected to attend weekly Zoom class meetings, watch class videos, take online quizzes, and submit any required work online.  NOTE: Attendance is especially important for a condensed 8-week class.

The deadline for drops this semester is December 9, 2020.

WITHDRAWAL. Before you consider dropping this class or any class, talk with your instructor to try to protect your investment in the course.  If a student wants to withdraw from a class, then the student must contact the instructor and turn in an Academic Withdrawal form (linked above) to Amarillo College.

LATE WORK / MAKEUP WORK:

NOTE: Students will be allowed to turn in one writing assignment late without penalty. However, all other writing assignments must be turned in on time or there will be late point deductions.  Online reading quizzes will be available for at least two-four days, and you can take them any time during that period.  No makeup quizzes will be allowed unless there is a documented medical illness or event, a documented funeral of a close family member or friend, a court summons, a college-sanctioned trip for a competition, or another legally protected absence under state and federal law (e.g. military service).  Students are responsible for providing documentation in a timely manner in order to have absences excused.

Tentative Course Schedule for Fall II 8-Week Hybrid English 1302 (Tech-Supported)

IMPORTANT: WE DON'T MEET IN PERSON FOR THIS CLASS: All lecture classes on the Washington St. campus are virtual / tech-supported this eight weeks.  However, we will have weekly Zoom classes each Wednesday at 9:00 a.m., and I will be available for office hours in person in Ordway 100 B and also through Zoom.

Monday, Oct. 26:  All students should watch posted Video 1 in our Blackboard course Announcements for very important information about how this class will operate, the online and Zoom requirements, how your grade will be determined, etc.

Wed., Oct. 28:  ZOOM CLASS MEETING AT 9:00 a.m.  The Zoom class meeting link is posted in our Blackboard course Announcements and will be emailed to your AC email.  This is a required Zoom class meeting each Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.  To get credit for attending the class, sign in with your first and last name used in this course, stay the entire half hour of class time, and answer one of my questions in the Chat.  Attendance will be taken, determined by who signs into the meeting, and answers one of my questions in the Chat.  Zoom attendance will be part of your grade in this class.

Homework before Monday, Nov. 2:  All students should watch posted Video 2 on how to evaluate reputable sources, the kinds of sources you’ll be allowed to use in this class, and what you need to do for Research Assignment 1.  Read all of the files in Unit One of our Course Content area.  After watching this video and reading Unit One files, take the “Evaluating Sources” Quiz located in the Quizzes folder in our Course Content area.  This quiz covers the Unit One material I went over in Video 2 and is due before Monday at 10:15 a.m.  Typically, you will have a quiz due each Monday morning by 10:15 a.m.  Our class was originally scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays, so due dates and class requirements will occur on those days.

Monday, Nov. 2:

Reminder: Quiz on Evaluating Outside Sources is due this morning by 10:15 a.m.  Today, students should read the short story "The Lottery" posted in Unit 2.  Then, watch posted Video 3, in which I will go over / analyze the story “The Lottery” and explain literary terms such as “theme,” “symbol,” “point of view,” etc., and apply them to this story.  After watching the video, take the two quizzes on “The Lottery” posted in the Quizzes folder.  One quiz will require you to apply literary analysis terms to the story.  Both quizzes are due before Monday, Nov. 9, at 10:15 a.m.

Wed., Nov. 4:          

At 9:00 a.m., we have our required Zoom class, so join that class using the same Zoom link posted in our Announcements.  To get credit for attending the class, sign in with your first and last name used in this course, stay the entire half hour of class time, and answer one of my questions in the Chat.  After our Zoom class, all students should watch posted Video 4 on Research Assignment 1.  In this video, I will explain your first writing assignment, which is due Wednesday, Nov. 11, before midnight.

Homework before Monday, Nov. 9, at 10:15 a.m.:  Remember to take the two quizzes on "The Lottery" AFTER reading the story and watching Video 3, in which I explain the story and explain important literary analysis terms included in one of the quizzes.

Before Midnight: Research Assignment 1 is due online in the Course Content Research Assignment 1 folder dropbox.  Follow the posted Research Assignment 1 requirements carefully, and submit your assignment as a Word or PDF attachment.

Homework before Monday, Nov. 16: Read the poems and novel excerpt in Unit 3.  Then, watch posted Video 5 in which I will go over and explain our Unit 3 Readings.  Then take the quiz on our Unit 3 Readings by Monday at 10:15 a.m.

Reminder: Take Quiz on the Unit 3 Readings Before 10:15 a.m.  Then, watch Video 6 on Research Assignment 2, in which I will explain the requirements of this assignment and go over a sample Research Assignment 2.

At 9:00 a.m. we have our required Zoom class.

After our Zoom class, watch Video 7 on MLA-style source documentation, which you must use in Research Assignment 2.   

Homework:  After watching Video 7, take the MLA-style source documentation quiz in the Quizzes folder by Monday at 10:15 a.m.

Monday, Nov. 23: Reminder: Take Quiz on MLA-Style Source Documentation Before 10:15 a.m.  Then watch Video 8 on our Major Research Paper, worth 30% of your grade.

Wed., Nov. 25:   NO ZOOM CLASS TODAY BECAUSE OF THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY.  Instead, watch Video 9 on the story “Harrison Bergeron.” 

Homework: Finish Research Assignment 2, due Monday by midnight.  Remember you can request a Zoom meeting with me or meet with a free online or in-person Writers’ Corner tutor to help you with this assignment, worth 20% of your grade.

Monday, Dec. 7:  Work on your Major Research Paper rough draft, using my help and the help of the free Writers’ Corner. 

Homework: Complete your Major Research Paper rough draft, which is due Wednesday, Dec. 9, by 10:15 a.m. in the Major Research Paper folder’s dropbox.  Email me to request an individual rough draft conference, with the day and times you could meet and whether you want an in-person or Zoom conference.  In this conference, we will go over your rough draft.

Wed., Dec. 9: Major Research Paper Rough Draft Due by 10:15 a.m.  NO ZOOM CLASS.  Instead, we will have individual conferences over your Major Research Paper Rough Draft today through Saturday.  You are required to meet with me to discuss your rough draft, either in person in my office in Ordway 100 B or through a Zoom meeting.  You must email me with a day and times you can meet, specifying if you want to meet in person or through Zoom, and I’ll respond to confirm our meeting date and time, with a Zoom link if you request a Zoom meeting.  Students who do not go over their rough drafts with me do NOT do as well on their papers.

Homework: Complete your Major Research Paper, due Monday by 10:15 a.m.

Monday, Dec. 14:  Your Major Research Paper is due before 10:15 a.m. in the Major Research Paper Final Copy dropbox in the Major Research Paper folder.  Please make sure that you have met with me and / or a free Writers’ Corner tutor to go over a rough draft before you turn in the final copy.  This Major Research Paper is worth 30% of your grade, and you will do MUCH better on it if you go over a draft with me or a tutor to catch MLA-style source documentation issues, missing paper assignment requirements, etc.  This paper stands in for your final exam.
