Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

MATH-1325-002 Calculus for Business & Social Sciences
Prerequisite: MATH 1314 or 1414 College Algebra or MATH 1324 Mathematics for Business and Social Sciences
This course is the basic study of limits and continuity, differentiation, optimization and graphing, and integration of elementary functions, with emphasis on applications in business, economics, and social sciences. This course is not a substitute for MATH 2313 or 2413, Calculus I.

Basic: Blue-line notebook paper (8.5" x 11") and blue-line graph paper—4 or 5 squares per inch, stapler, a straight edge, pencils, erasers, a highlighter in your favorite color. You can get free graph paper at http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/lite/
MyLab Math: Signing up for MyLab Math must be done through Blackboard. The code can be purchased through the bookstore or online directly through Pearson.
Calculator: You will need a graphing calculator for this course. All computations and demonstrations in class will be done using a TI-84. Any calculator in the TI-84 family will work. (The Math Department policy is that no TI-89’s or TI-92’s may be used on tests.)
Printer: Access to a printer in order to print out the notes is important. Please remember that as students you have $20 of free printing from the school, so printing off the notes should effectively be free. If you are unsure where to go to print off the notes at the school, please let me know, and I will do my best to direct you.

Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Cheating is defined in Webster's College Dictionary as "taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers." Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student's paper and using unauthorized sources of information while taking a test. Any student caught cheating will receive an F for the course.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.
Daily Homework:
Daily homework assignments will consist of online assignments. Online assignments will be submitted using MyLab Math and will be automatically graded on the website. Details on how to register and enroll in MyMathLab will be given in class. Assignment deadlines will be indicated in MyMathLab with each homework set.
To compensate for life situations, I will allow for a week's extension on homework once, with the exception of the last set of homework. If you need extra time, please let me know by messaging me through the course Blackboard shell.
Reviews:
Every exam has a review to complete that must be printed from Blackboard. In order to take an exam, you must turn in the completed exam reviews to the Math Testing Center right before you take the exam.
Quizzes:
Two quizzes will be taken in MyLab Math. You will have two attempts for each one, and I will accept the higher of the two grades. These quizzes are timed. There will be a review for each quiz that you are expected to complete prior to taking the quiz.
Midterm:
1 in-person midterm exams will be given during the semester in the Math Testing Center. If you know ahead of time that you will be missing an exam, you may schedule to take the exam early. Only under extenuating, verifiable circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor will an exam be given early. Make-up exams will not be given.
In accordance with Mathematics Department policy, students scoring below a 70 on any major exam will be required to spend at least one hour in the Tutoring Center getting help. This must be completed within the time specified by your instructor.
Final Exam:
The mandatory in-person comprehensive final exam will be due on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. The reviews for the Final Exam must also be turned in prior to taking the Final Exam.
Your course average (A 100 - 90, B 89 - 80, C 79 - 70, D 69 - 60, F Below 60) will be calculated using the following scale:

Regular attendance is essential in a math class. It is during class that questions about homework, new assignments & announcements, and course content will be covered. Attendance in an online mathematics course is considered logging in each week to complete the notes and assignments.
Please remember the deadline for dropping this course is Wednesday, July 17, 2024. If you wish to drop, you must notify me and complete a withdrawal form by the deadline. Therefore, you should notify me by 5:00 PM on Monday, July 15, 2024 that you wish to withdraw. Financial aid ramifications may exist, so I strongly advise you to consult your advisor before dropping any course. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.
