Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

Supplies

  • Graphing Calculator:  You are required to bring your calculator to EVERY class.  A TI-84 Plus calculator is preferred and will be used by the instructor.  No calculators with logic or factoring capabilities are allowed (TI-89, TI-92, TI-nspire).  Students unable to purchase a graphing calculator can apply to the Adult Students Program for the privilege of checking one out for the semester. No sharing of calculators is allowed and a cell phone calculator will not be permitted.

    Access to a working computer with internet access and a printer.  There are student computers located in the Ware Student Commons for student use and also in the Math Outreach Center.  This enables you to access the course in Blackboard and the online homework.

Student Performance

After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Explain the use of statistics and sampling as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  2. Recognize, examine, and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
  3. Explain the role of probability in statistics.
  4. Examine, analyze, and compare various sampling distributions (binomial, normal).
  5. Describe and compute confidence intervals.
  6. Solve linear regression and correlation problems.
  7. Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.
  8. Conduct parametric and non-parametric inferential statistical tests.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment.  Behaviors that are not supportive include but are not limited to:  tardiness/leaving early, electronic device noises, talking during lecture, texting or participating in social media during lecture, and abusive, offensive, or disrespectful language or demeanor towards AC faculty, staff, students, or property.

Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and "Student Rights & Responsibilities" will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include but is not limited to: removal from the classroom, consultation with the department chair or other AC authority, or withdrawl from the course or college.

Scholastic dishonesty shall constitute a violation of the rules and regulations described in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook under Student Conduct and Responsibilities.  Consequences for cheating may include  receiving a zero for an assignment, permanent removal from the class, or failing the course.

Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism:  Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student's paper or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz.  You will be testing in the Math Testing Center and must abide by their cheating & cell phone policy which states:  I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic "F" in the course.  This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes the use of cell phone calculators, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, and copying.  Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.  NO CELL PHONES in the Testing Room.  If w see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an "F" for the course!

Videos/Photos:  Students should ask permission before taking pictures or videos of the instructor's work or lessons.

Guests/Children:    It is the policy of the Mathematics, Engineering, Drafting & Data Science Department that only students enrolled in this course may attend this course.

Grading Criteria

Your semester grade (90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, below 60 F) will be calculated using the following weights:

Four major exams will be given this semester in addition to a comprehensive final exam.  If the final exam is higher than the lowest major exam, the final exam grade will replace it.  Otherwise, all major exam grades will be counted in the final average.  Major exams will be taken in the Math Testing Center and kept on file.  The final exam is taken in class and is tentatively scheduled for 9am on  Wednesday, Oct 9.

Attendance

Our course meets Monday - Thursday 9:00 - 10:15am with lab on MW 10:30 - 11:20am. Daily attendance is necessary in both lecture and lab to be successful in this course.  You should be on time for class, prepared for class, and actively participate and be on task in class daily.  It is the responsibility of the student to sign the attendance sheet daily.  Nonattendance will be recorded as an absence, and no differentiation will be made as to excused or unexcused absences.  Note that the last day to drop is Tuesday, October 1, 2024.  Students now have to go through the instructor to drop a course.  The deadline for letting me know you want to drop is 5:00pm on Monday, September 30.  Students who stop attending class and do not officially drop will receive a grade of F if their average falls below a 60.

Additional Information

Homework problems will be submitted online using MyStatLab.  All homework problems can be accessed online through our Blackboard course.  If for some reason the Blackboard site is down, students can log directly into MyStatLab at www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com.  Students will submit answers to all problems on this website.  MyStatLab automatically grades each problem and offers step by step help as you work.  Due dates for the online homework will be announced in class.  Beyond the due date, students can view but not change the online assignments.   All instructions as to registering in MyStatLab will be given in class.

LAB ASSIGNMENTS

Labs (MW 10:30am - 11:20am) will consist of completing written lab assignments and occasionally computer assignments using Excel covering the concepts we have discussed in lecture. Each lab assignment will be posted in Blackboard for the student to print and bring to class, do not complete before class.  In most cases, students will be allowed to work in groups. Attendance in lab is mandatory. All lab assignments will be completed in PENCIL, submitted during lab, and graded by the instructor. Assignment deadlines will be announced as material is covered. I do not accept early or late lab assignments.  If you do not attend lab, you cannot submit the lab for the day to be graded.  That is, you must attend lab to get a grade.  

LATE WORK / EXTRA CREDIT

Late work is NOT accepted and extra credit is NOT given under any circumstance.  Due dates will be announced in class so be sure you are in class to keep up with your work.

 Students will be required to log in to Blackboard regularly to check the course announcements, e-mail, grades, and print class handouts.  To access our course area in Blackboard:
