Statement for Mental Health and Advocacy & Resource Center:

As a student you may experience a range of issues that can cause barriers to learning, such as strained relationships, increased anxiety, alcohol/drug problems, feeling down, difficulty concentrating and/or lack of motivation. These mental health concerns or stressful events may lead to diminished academic performance or reduce a student's ability to participate in daily activities. Amarillo College offers services to assist you with addressing these and other concerns you may be experiencing. If you or someone you know are suffering from any of the aforementioned conditions, you can learn more about the broad range of confidential mental health services available on campus by calling the AC Counseling Center at 806-371-5900. Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) For more information on Drop and Withdrawal Policies, please visit the Registrar's Office Web site.

I don't require a book for this course. The bookstore assigns the same book for each section of Interpersonal Communication, but I have decided to use publicly available information to save money and reduce confusion.

If you purchased the textbook through the bookstore, please return it and get your money back, or sell it to someone taking a different instructor for this course.

Expected Student Behavior

Confidentiality
Many communication courses ask students to engage in a level of self-disclosure not usually characteristic of other courses. Different people will feel comfortable with varying levels of self-disclosure. While I would like you to draw from your personal experience, you may choose to talk about yourself or someone you know. If it is the latter, in the interest of confidentially they should remain nameless. Interpersonal Communication is an interactive course, meaning you will be learning from each other’s personal experiences and examples. For this reason it is encouraged for you to be open to sharing with the class. Additionally, because some individuals will be sharing personal stories, I expect there to be a level of confidentiality among the members of the class and respect for their classmates' privacy.

Participation Activities:
This class relies upon two major things 1) your active participation in online discussions and class exercises and 2) a close, meaningful analysis of your own communication tendencies with family, friends, co-workers and people you meet. If these things occur along with attention to assignments and class readings you will find tools to better understand your own communication skills, relate better with others and succeed in this course.

Discussion Boards:
Once you post your own response, you'll reply to other peers in the class. NOTE: I require at least one response in addition to your original post, as anything less than that would not be a discussion. Anything more than that is not expected but it certainly adds to the discussion if you have something valuable to contribute. I grade based on the quality of your responses to each other. Quality is preferred over quantity!

Late Work Policy: I do not accept late work. Assignments are due by the published due date with only 1 exception--extenuating circumstances. If you are faced with a situation that is out of your control and is causing you to fall behind, please contact me directly immediately so we can create a plan for you to be successful.

Final Project:
This semester, you will write a 3-4 page paper detailing what you have learned about your interpersonal skills and how they have evolved throughout the semester. You can view more details about this assignment and start on it at any time by accessing the "Common Assessment" tab within the Blackboard course. It is due no later than 11:59 pm on Wednesday, October 9.

Attendance

Attendance (100 points): Regular attendance is essential for satisfactory achievement. Your participation in discussions and activities will directly affect your grade. Attendance will be based on your successful submission of assignments each week by the published due date and the use of login reports if needed. Points will be deducted from your grade for absences.

Additional Information

I will check emails several times a week, and will stay off my computer on the weekends (Fri-Sun) to take a break and get outside. I suggest you take a couple of days off from schoolwork as well, to refresh and recharge mentally and physically. If you want to set up an online video chat or meet on campus you can. I am happy to meet at a time that works for you, day or night. Just ask and we can set something up. Email/course message is the fastest way to communicate with me. Please give me 1-2 days to respond.

This course requires that you write 3 discussion boards with at least 1 response in addition to your original post, along with 3 quizzes, and your final papers, and this all requires me to read your work and give feedback. I often am teaching up to 100 students in one semester, and it takes a while to grade all of those thoroughly. While I will often have them graded within a week of the due date, please know that it can take up to two weeks at times, depending on other circumstances. I appreciate your patience!
