Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

POLICY ON CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM:  Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Students that cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on your permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, copying or leaving the Math Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.  You will be taking your midterm and final exam in the Math Testing Center.  Please note:  NO CELL PHONES in the Testing Room.  If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, you will receive an F for the course.

MyMathLab:  If you do not purchase a textbook bundled with a MyMathLab Access Code, you will need to purchase the code in the Amarillo College Book Store or online through Pearson.

Calculator:  You will need a graphing calculator for this course. All computations and demonstrations in class will be done using a TI-84 Plus. The following calculators are acceptable:  TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84, or TI-84 plus graphing calculator. (The Math Department policy is that no TI-89’s or TI-92’s may be used on tests.)  You may download a free calculator emulator for 90 days to use at https://education.ti.com/en/downloads/trial-software.

Student Expectation: Students are expected to be ON TIME and PREPARED for class daily.  Students should participate in class in a positive manner.  Using foul language in emails or discussions will not be tolerated and may result in possible removal from the course.  You are expected to express yourself with courtesy and consideration at all times.  For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook http://sites.actx.edu/catalog/notices/.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.

Grading Criteria

Online Homework: All homework will be completed online using the MyMathLab website. Help buttons will be available for each problem in MyMathLab, and you may rework problems multiple times until you get the correct answer. Assignment deadlines will be stated on the course calendar and indicated in MyMathLab with each homework assignment. Although this homework will be submitted online, I strongly recommend that you keep an organized log of written work to accompany each homework assignment to better learn the process of solving problems. Two online homework assignments will be dropped when calculating your overall homework average. I do not accept late homework.

Spotlight Problems: Spotlight problems will consist of completing written assignments covering the concepts we have discussed in the lecture. Usually, these problems require a deeper understanding of the basic concepts and students must apply critical thinking skills. These problems will be submitted in class and graded by the instructor.

Exam Reviews:  Reviews will be assigned before each major exam and serve as a practice exam. You must turn in a completed exam review before you will be allowed to take your exam.

Exams:  Four exams and a comprehensive final exam will be given and completed in the Math Testing Center outside of class time. No late exams will be provided. The Math Testing Center rules are included at the end of the syllabus. Students must show an Amarillo College ID and turn in an exam review before testing. If you know in advance that you will be gone during the assigned exam dates, you MUST make arrangements with your instructor to take the exam early in the Math Testing Center.

Final Exam: A comprehensive final exam will be given on Week 8. The deadline for completing the final exam is Wednesday, March 6th by 10pm. The final may not be taken beyond that date. The final exam counts 20% of your grade. If the grade of the final exam is higher than your lowest test, it will replace that grade.

Mandatory Tutoring: If you score below 70 on any unit exam or your overall average drops below a 75, you will be required to complete one hour of tutoring. Tutoring may be completed in the Math Academic Success Center in Durrett Hall Room 104.  All graded exams will be kept on file in the Math Testing Center. You must complete the required tutoring before being allowed to take the next exam.

Your course average (A  100 - 90, B  89 - 80, C  79 - 70, D  69 - 60, F Below 60) will be calculated using the following scale:

MML Homework (drop 2):  15%

Spotlight Problems:  10%

Reviews:        5%

Exams:        50%

Final:            20%

I do not accept late work and extra credit is not given.

Attendance

The deadline to drop this course is Tuesday, October 1st.  To complete the drop process, submit your form to me for my signature by noon on October 1st.  If you stop attending class and your average drops below 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.

Note:  Late drops will NOT be given under any circumstance.
