Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

Student Performance

As outlined in the learning plan, the student will apply the theory, concepts and skills involving
specialized material, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws and interaction within and
among political, economic, environmental, social and legal systems associated with the
particular occupation and the business/industry. Demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety
practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and communicate in the applicable language of
the occupation and business or industry.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of RNSG 2262 -CBN2: Clinical -Helathcare Concepts II-  the student will:

MEMBER OF THE PROFESSION 

  1. Practice nursing within an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards, regulation, and requirements in the critical care environment.

  2. Analyze own continuing competency needs in critical care nursing practice.
  3. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for quality nursing care following evidence-based practice of critically ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.

PROVIDER OF PATIENT-CENTERED CARE

  1. Implements strategies, processes and procedures to and functions with increased autonomy to assist in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of the health of critically ill patients and their families.
  2. Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning based on analysis of comprehensive assessment data to plan holistic patient-centered care for critically-ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments in the critical care environment.
  3. Apply nursing concepts specific to meeting the unique psychosocial needs of critically-ill patients who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments and their families.
  4. Apply effective health teaching strategies in the care of critically-ill patients and their families.
  5. Utilize both basic and advanced nursing skills competently in the care of critically-ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.
  6. Demonstrate respect and compassionate behaviors using appropriate communication skills in the care of critically ill patients and their families within the critical care environment regardless of culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, identity, spirituality or disability. 
  7. Utilize available human, information and physical resources in meeting the needs of critically-ill patients and their families for comprehensive, quality care.

PATIENT SAFETY ADVOCATE

  1. Utilize evidence-based practice data to improve the safety and quality of patient-centered care for the critically ill patient who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.
  2. Practice according to the regulations of the Texas Nursing Practice Act and Texas Board of Nursing Rules to promote and ensure patient safety in critical care environments.

MEMBER OF THE HEALTHCARE TEAM

  1. Coordinate, collaborate and communicate in a timely manner with patients, families and the interdisciplinary team to promote and provide quality, holistic patient-centered care for the critically ill patient who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.
  2. Participates as needed with health care teams during local or global health emergencies or pandemics to promote health and safety, and prevent disease.
  3. Utilize information systems and technology to efficiently manage and improve holistic patient-centered care for critically-ill patients who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving devices.
  4. Coordinate the nursing care of other team members through effective assignment, delegation of nursing activities and supervision in the critical care environment.

Expected Student Behavior

See A.D.N. Student Handbook Professional Conduct, ANA code of Ethics and Amarillo College Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Each student will adhere to the student handbook policies and procedures, the Amarillo College Nursing Honor Code Policy, Social Networking Policy, and all agency policies, including HIPAA. Any violation of these policies and procedures may result in failure of the course and possible dismissal from the program.

Students are to be prepared for the clinical setting with the appropriate supplies and materials.

Students are not permitted to use the telephone in the clinical area while on duty for personal calls (incoming or outgoing.)  It is suggested that you leave your cell phones at home. AC and the facility are not responsible for lost or stolen items.  In addition, you cannot have your phone turned on and left to ring in your bag since this can disturb patients and staff.  Texting or talking on cell phones is not permitted during the clinical day except during lunch/breaks. DO NOT use your cell phone while walking the halls to or from break.  Cell phones and smart watches are not permitted in the patient care areas. Telephones on the clinical unit are not to be used by students for personal calls.  Walking around the facility, texting is not allowed.  Please refrain from using your phone until you have sat down for your break.   Failure to comply with cell phone policy may result in a clinical warning and failure of the course.  Students are required to have a watch with a second hand.  NO “Smartwatches” are allowed. 

 When in the role of a student in any clinical setting, the student is to be professional in appearance. 

Student uniforms must be worn in the NRC during ALL skills and clinical simulation lab times.

In addition, students must leave the clinical area/facilities after clinical and may not wear the uniform if visiting friends or family after the rotation has ended.  Please change clothing before visiting. 


 

Grading Criteria

GRADING CRITERIA/GRADE SCALE:

  •         Overall grade scale: A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 74-60, F = below 60

Final Grade:

  • Clinical Performance Evaluation of Competencies (CPEC) – 100%

Attendance

Students must complete 100% of all required clinical hours: clinical orientation, assignments, clinical hours and simulation.  Total Clinical Hours: 144.

Students are responsible for reporting to the assigned clinical area on time and being dressed according to the “Student Dress Code Policy for Clinical”.

Clinical experience is an essential component of the program. Absenteeism jeopardizes the opportunity for successful completion of the course. Clinical absences must be reported to the instructor before pre-clinical conference. Failure to notify the instructor before the pre-clinical conference may result in failure of the course. Students who arrive late to the clinical area may be asked to leave if the report has been missed or the arrival time is incongruent with providing appropriate patient care.

Clinical absences will be made up at the discretion of the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the respective instructor regarding make-up assignments. Failure to do so will fail to meet the course outcomes. After an illness, a physician's statement may be required.

Students that are not in compliance with the dress code and required supplies to the clinical site are sent home for the day.  Students must make-up the absence, and will also receive a clinical warning.

RNSG 1431/2262-CBN2   Healthcare Concepts II

Students will be assigned to a 12hr/day - 4 week clinical rotation on Thursdays and Fridays during the 16 week course. Clinical assignments will be available no later than the 2nd week of the course.
