Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Grading Criteria

GRADES

Letter grades will be assigned on the following basis

 Grade                                     Points

A                                             900 to 1000 points

B                                             800 to 899 points

C                                             700 to 799 points

D                                             500 to 699 points

F                                              below 500

   Participation grade

This grade will be given at the end of the semester.  This grade is for listening to speeches in class and participating in all discussions and speeches.  This means if you participate, do not talk, use your cell phone, sleep or work on your own speech while others are speaking, you will receive the complete points.  You either get the full points or none.  This is an easy grade so don't mess it up.

Grading Policy

Your final grade will be decided as follows

 100 points          Magic Doors speech

200 points          Informative speech

200 points          Persuasive speech

150 points          Discussion boards (3 times worth 50 points each)

50 points          Peer review ( 2 times worth 25 points each)

100 points             Self evaluation

100 points           Quizzes (2 worth 50 points each)

100 points           Participation

100 points           Final exam

Speech Presentations

Be ready on the assigned speech day.  We may take two days to present some speeches so you should be able to get your speech in.  You can only make up 1 speech and that is if you have contacted me before class time and we set up a time for the makeup speech.  If you do not contact me about your absence, you will receive a zero for the speech that you miss.

You should understand that we will be busy these 8 weeks and speeches should be given when due.  If there isn’t any time for make-up speeches, then you will receive no points for that assignment.

Speech Outlines

Before giving the Informative and Persuasive speeches, you should turn in an outline.  Late outlines will cost you 5 points on the speech assignment.  If no outline is received, you will have 10 points deducted from the speech grade.

Online Discussion Boards

You should participate in the online discussion boards.   These are worth 50 points each.  These discussions can negatively impact your average if you fail to participate.  There are no right or wrong answers; just simply your thoughts/opinions on the reading.  You will need to post your own response and then respond to three other posts in order to get credit.

Attendance

Attendance

Because this is a performance/communication course, regular attendance is essential.

Perfect attendance means no absences or tardies, all speeches given on due date.  Perfect attendance = exemption from the Final Exam.  Please notify me by email if you are going to be absent, especially on speech days.  If you miss a lecture day, please get the notes from another student.
