SPRING- II - 2021:  March 22nd through May 14th:   I will be ON CAMPUS in my office in DUTTON HALL 202J Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 12:00 pm. I have a 9 am to 10:15 am course, as well as a Monday-Thursday 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm course.   Please call me so we can set up an appointment time that works for you. We can meet virtually or somewhere where we can socially distance effectively (not in my office!) I have a virtual office in COLLABORATE where we can also meet face to face if you need tutoring or just to chat, if you prefer. 
If you want to meet with me outside of those hours, I'm happy to do that. Please call me and we can set up a time to meet. As well, I'm happy to meet with you  on a FACETIME CALL or in our COLLABORATE MEETING PLACE ONLINE! I am happy to tutor you in any way I can so you can succeed in this course! Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) YOU MUST HAVE ACCESS TO A WORKING COMPUTER OR BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE AC COMPUTERS DURING THE TIMES THEY ARE OPEN.  If you don't have your own computer, use AC computers. We have computers for your use in the on campus COMPUTER LABS as well as the 2nd floor of the library.

To access AC CONNECT, you need your AC online user name and password. This class has an online courseroom that you can access by going to the AC homepage, clicking on AC ONLINE at the top of the homepage, and then putting in your user name and password when prompted.  You will see the online link to our classroom. TO DOWNLOAD AND PRINT OFF YOUR LECTURE POWERPOINT NOTES:

In order to print out your powerpoint lecture notes you will need a computer that has POWER POINT on it (as the library computers do). OPEN THE FILE YOU WANT TO PRINT OFF.   Open up the file by clicking on THE LINK, AND YOU CAN EITHER OPEN IT BY CLICKING ON THE FILE NAME OR BY WAITING FOR IT TO OPEN AUTOMATICALLY.  Once it has opened up in power point, click on PRINT from the menu list at the top of the screen. This will open your printer driver window. Since all printer driver windows are different a bit depending upon the printer you are using, look for the place where it says "PRINT WHAT"...select Handouts from the menu. Then you'll see the Handouts area light up and select 3 for number of slides per page. Also, if you have a color printer but don't want to print in color, you can select Gray Scale , rather than color and save on that color ink.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

USING FILMS, READINGS SPECIFIC TO CERTAIN TOPICS, IN CLASS AND ONLINE LABS, AS WELL AS CLASS DISCUSSIONS, LECTURE AND EXAMS, STUDENTS WHO TAKE THIS COURSE WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES BY THE END OF THIS CLASS: 1.  Learners will gain a working knowledge as to how individuals impact social situations and groups and how situations and groups impact individual thinking, feeling and behavior.
    
2.  Learners will gain an understanding of how scientific methodology is applied to studying social psychology.
    
3.  Learners will analyze the major concepts and theories in the field of social psychology.
    
4.  Learners will critically and creatively analyze concepts and theories discussed in the text.  Students will engage is discussions in class, as well as writing essays related to the text readings and lecture material.
    
5.   By the end of this course, learners will be able to apply the ideas in this class to real world social situations, such as dealing with prejudice and stereotyping, changing attitudes and behaviors through persuasive techniques (such as those used in politics and advertising), and in creating a sustainable future on our planet, as a few examples.

Expected Student Behavior

STUDENT BEHAVIOR: What is expected of you!

IF THIS IS AN ON CAMPUS COURSE: Students are expected to attend class, to participate in class and to prepare for class lectures and discussions by reading the text and doing homework assignments. Students are expected to turn off all electronic devices (if you have a sick child, you may bring your phone and put it on vibrate). Please do not engage in side conversations during class time, texting, reading newspapers, taking naps, and any other distracting behaviors. If you miss class, you are expected to contact the instructor and/or other students in the class to get information about the class. 

FOR ALL COURSES: Since this instructor emails reminders via the AC ONLINE classroom announcement page, it's best to check into your AC ONLINE class frequently.  As well, all course notes and assignments are in the AC ONLINE classroom folders, as directed by your instructor.   It is your responsibility to get the information and printed materials, as well as take EXAMS in the AC Online classroom. If you don't have a computer, simply check the ones in the library.  You can get onto AC ONLINE from any computer anywhere!

Each student is expected to engage in academic honesty, refraining from cheating on EXAMS or plagiarism. YOUR EXAMS ARE MEANT TO BE TAKEN BY YOU!  IF THIS INSTRUCTOR LEARNS THAT YOU ARE COLLABORATING ON EXAMS, YOU WILL FAIL THE COURSE!  Plagiarism on written work will NOT be tolerated.  PLAGIARISM IS USING SOMEONE ELSES’ MATERIAL AS IF IT WERE WRITTEN OR ORIGINATED BY YOU.  If you plagiarize, you can fail the assignment and receive a 0.  Plagiarism means copying off of the internet, quoting directly without giving credit to the source, or using parts of another persons work as your own. Copying and pasting material off the internet is strictly forbidden!   YOU MUST CITE ALL SOURCES AND HAVE A REFERENCE SECTION WITH APA STYLE CITATIONS FOR YOUR PAPER! PLEASE DO NOT ENGAGE IN THIS BEHAVIOR.  We have access to a plagiarism checker program and any paper that this instructor sees is plagiarized in part or in full, will be getting a 0 on the paper, and a letter of reprimand will be filed in your academic record.  IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS AS TO WHETHER SOMETHING IS CONSIDERED PLAGIARISM, PLEASE ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR BEFORE YOU ENGAGE IN QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIOR!  AGAIN, I CONSIDER THIS A VERY SERIOUS OFFENSE AND WILL NOT TOLERATE IT!!!

FOR ONLINE COURSES AND ONLINE PORTIONS OF TRADITIONAL AND HYBRID COURSES: Students are expected to engage in appropriate "netiquette" in the ONLINE PORTIONS of this class AT ALL TIMES.  Inappropriate online behaviors, such as swearing, discussion of inappropriate issues NOT related to the course room material, or any type of intolerance or rudeness to other learners will not be tolerated and may result in having to drop this course, failing the class, or dismissal from Amarillo College. Treat others as you like to be treated and everything should be fine!

Now, having said that, please remember that this is an COLLEGE LEVEL COURSE, and we will be discussing controversial issues in an ADULT MANNER!  You are expected to act like an adult in these discussions and realize that others may think and feel differently than you on a host of issues related to sociology!  Diversity is a GREAT THING and to be APPRECIATED in this instructors opinion.  If you find something offensive that is said by another student OR your instructor, please don't hesitate to contact me and discuss this with me.  However, it's important to remember that this course is not designed to CONFIRM YOUR OWN POLITICAL or RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, but rather to get you to think about sociology, society, and people in a bigger way than you may have already been exposed to. IN THAT, YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF UNCOMFORTABLE AT TIMES, AS YOU ARE BEING REQUIRED TO STRETCH OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE! This is a part of what it means to get an education!  Obviously, learning to see the world in a different light is the goal of this course!   You are encouraged to debate others, and your instructor, in a polite BUT WELL INFORMED manner!  If you want to debate a point made, all this instructor asks, is that you bring your sources and do a good job of backing up your ideas.  In academics, we like well informed opinions!  This is KEY to analytical and creative thinking and is the hallmark of what it means to have academic freedom!  If you are not comfortable expressing your opinions in front of the class, you may obtain 10 extra credit points by WRITING a rebuttal paper.  If your instructor feels that you have backed up your point of view with sources that are informed and expert on the topic, your instructor will READ your paper to the class (with your permission of course!).  Let's enjoy the spirit of debate and differing viewpoints.  I look forward to a REAL educational experience with you all!

Grading Criteria

Your final grade for this course will be based on the standard grading percentages:

  • 89.45 - 100 = A
  • 79.45 - 89.44 = B
  • 69.45 - 79.44 = C
  • 49.45 - 69.44 = D
  • Below 49.5 - F

GRADING SCALE FOR THIS COURSE and ALL ASSIGNMENTS

 

Reminder: Your final grade is composed of the following grades:

  • EMAIL to INSTRUCTOR WITH CONTACT INFORMATION = 10 points
  • SYLLABUS QUIZ = 10 pts
  • UNITS 1 Discussion (worth 20 points) and Unit 3 Discussion (worth 35 points ) =  55 points total
  • UNITS 1, 2, 3 and 4 READING QUIZZES =
    • Unit 1 Reading quiz is worth 10 points.
    • Unit 2 Reading Quiz is worth 15 points
    • Units 3 and 4 Reading Quizzes are worth 20 points each.  TOTAL POINTS: 65
    • You also get ½ your score for extra credit; So if you got 16 points out of 20, you would get 8 extra credit points. DO THE BEST YOU CAN on your reading quizzes, they will help you! final grade!   NOTE: You can also donate to the AC FOOD PANTRY ($1 food or gift card dontation = 1 points).  So let’s say you got a total of 8 points on the first quiz, you would get 4 extra credit points.  Then let’s say you have a total of 30 points. You could donate another $10 to the food bank for extra points.
  • UNITS 1, 2, and 3 Exams (100 points each) and the grade book is set to drop the lowest exam score of these 3 exams.  Then, the UNIT 4 FINAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM (100 points) IS REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE!  If you miss this exam, it’s a 0! NO DROP! Again, our gradebook will drop the lowest exam grade from UN ITS 1, 2, and 3 and UNIT 4 EXAM is REQUIRED for everyone = 100 points. 
                • TOTAL EXAM POINTS = 300 points.
  • SERVICE PROJECT TOPIC: By Thursday of week 2, submit the TOPIC and AGENCY-PROGRAM you are looking into for your SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY QUESTIONS.     = 10 points
  • SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY:  By THURSDAY of week 7 submit the 5 ESSAY QUESTIONS in the TEMPLATE PROVIDED YOU, well written, well edited and citations in ITEM #3 (at least 2)  = 100 points
    • NOTE: You can send your ESSAY to the WRITER’S CORNER For help by their tutors.  Have them send me an email and you will get an extra 10 points on your paper for your tutoring!
  • EXTRA CREDIT is voluntary= Up to 40 pts added to your points total,  can be comprised of
    • Up to 40 points for the UNITS 1-4 READING QUIZZES.
    •  You can combine this with your donation to the AC Pantry or local food bank.
    • So LET’S SAY you got a total of 28 extra credit points on your reading quiz (1/2 the earned score) then you can donate an extra $12.00 food to the FOOD BANK for a total of 40 extra credit points. NOTE:  YOU CANNOT HAVE MORE THAN 40 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS TOTAL! This can help you with a low score or if you missed a reading quiz or discussion.  
    • In order to get your points:  You must submit a JPG PHOTO (from your phone!!!) of your PANTRY/FOOD BANK receipt AND your purchase receipt.  REMEMBER, you cannot get more than 40 extra credit points TOTAL, but this can help offset a low score!

While it may be tempting to skip class if this is a traditional on campus course OR not check in frequently in an online class, know that the #1 factor linked with good grades , whether the class is traditional OR ONLINE, IS class attendance!!!  You can work ahead in this class, BUT note that each unit, exam, lab and assignment has a closing time.  You MUST stay current with your work and it’s highly suggested that you fill out the study guide as your read your chapters before you take the exam for that unit!

    • First, Research a social or psychological problem in our community (or your community if you live elsewhere) and the use the VOLUNTEER WEBSITE to research agencies and or programs that have volunteer opportunities related to that social or psychological problem.
    • Then, in one sentence WRITE your TOPIC and AGENCY-PROGRAM in the “WRITE SUBMISSION” part of the TOPIC DROP BOX.  Hit Submit
    • For example, “I am interested in the topic of homelessness and I am researching the FAITH CITY MISSION organization.”  OR “I want to write about child abuse and I have an appointment to discuss the agencies mission and work at THE BRIDGE”. 
  • UNIT 1 DISCUSSION: INTRODUCE YOURSELF and CLASS DIVIDED video COMMENTS due FRIDAY, APRIL 2nd by 11:55 pm (30 pts) Check grammar, respond to a minimum of 1 other student in a substantive manner (“I agree” or “that’s so great” are not substantive remarks!), AND NO TEXTING LANGUAGE! THIS IS A COLLEGE LEVEL ESSAY!! Remember, "I" is a proper noun! EDIT YOUR WORK! Use spell and grammar check! I suggest writing your essay in WORD, do spell and grammar check and read it out loud, then copy it and paste it into the text box in the DISCUSSION AREA! (worth 20 pt for both discussion & response(s))
  • UNIT 1 READING QUIZ: ALL READING QUIZZES ARE REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE:  Due SUNDAY, APRIL 4TH by 11:55 pm:  There are 10 questions over chapters 1 & 2, for 20 points. You can take this twice and grade book takes highest score.  NOTE: You ALSO get UP TO 10 points extra credit for doing this quiz (extra credit is ½ your earned score. So, if you got a score of 14 on your quiz, you would get 7 extra credit points, as an example).  Do as well as you can on your quizzes!
  • UNIT 1 EXAM and UNIT 1 CLOSE MONDAY, APRIL 5TH by 11:55 pm (100 pts). You get two attempts on THIS EXAM ONLY! The other three exams only have one attempt. Grade book automatically takes the highest grade for exam 1 (and your reading quizzes)!  ALSO, the grade book automatically drops lowest exam from UNITS 1, 2, 3.  NOTE: Unit 4 exam is required for everyone!  NOTE: YOU MUST TAKE UNIT 4 EXAM! DO NOT FORGET!
  • UNIT 2 OPEN: OFFICIAL BEGINNING on TUESDAY, APRIL 5TH (but will be open before that so you can work ahead) and CLOSES MONDAY, APRIL 19TH by 11:55 pm. Read Chapters 3, 4 and 5 and watch all required videos and do the tasks (like self-monitoring quiz).  If it says IT'S REQUIRED, that means THERE WILL BE QUESTIONS ON THE EXAM!  NOTE: YOUR UNITS are open in advance so you can work ahead!  Reminder: You only have 13 days to do this unit!  Keep working hard. This goes by very fast!!!!
  • UNIT 2 READING QUIZ: REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE:  Due SUNDAY APRIL 18TH by 11:55 pm:  There are 20questions, 6-7 per chapter over chap 3, 4 and 5 and worth 20 points. You can take this twice and grade book takes highest score.  NOTE: Remember you get ½ your earned score as extra credit, up to 10 points! 
  • UNIT 2 EXAM CLOSES MONDAY, APRIL 19TH by 11:55 pm (100 pts) REQUIRED: Remember, if it says REQUIRED, it's on the exam (videos, assessments, study guide, chapters etc!). The gradebook drops the lowest of your first 3 exams!
  • UNIT 3 opens SATURDAY, JULY 4th (will be open early so you can work ahead!): Covers chapters 6 & 7 (read together),  and chapters 8 & 9 (read together), and watch the HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS film, read the article on ABU GHRAIB, and watch other shorter required videos. If it says REQUIRED (LIKE A VIDEO), it's on the exam! Your will have a UNIT 3 Discussion over the readings and movies that you watch! Note: You only have 13 days to do this unit!  WORK AHEAD!
  • UNIT 3 DISCUSSION: DUE FRIDAY, APRIL 30TH by 11:55 pm (worth 30 points).  After reading all four chapters in 6, 7 , 8 and 9, watching the HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS film and the shorter films, and the REQUIRED ARTICLE on ABU GHRAIB, you will use your BEST COLLEGE LEVEL WRITING to answer the questions in UNIT 3 DISCUSSION, as well as respond to at least one other student!  Unit 3 Discussion and your responses to other students are DUE no later than FRIDAY, APRIL 30TH by 11:55 pm (worth 35 pts FOR DISCUSSION & RESPONSE). Don’t wait until the last minute to do this discussion. It’s not easy and will take time to read the article, watch the films, and do the discussion in your best college level writing! Please edit your work carefully and respond to at least one other students post in the discussion. 
  • UNIT 3 READING QUIZ: REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE:  Due SUNDAY,MAY 2ND by 11:55 pm:  There are 20 questions, 5 per chapter over chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9. You can take this as many times as you like.  Grade book takes highest score. Worth 20 points and ½ earned score as extra credit points.
  • UNIT 3 EXAM DUE and UNIT 3 close MONDAY, MAY 3RD  by 11:55 pm (100 pts and grade book drops the lowest of UNITS 1, 2, and 3 exam automatically. You only get one attempt so be ready!  REMEMBER!  UNIT 4 EXAM IS REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE!  DO NOT FORGET!!!!!!.
  •  REMINDER: The Blackboard Grade book will drop lowest exam from Units 1, 2, 3 (300 points) with total of 200 exam points, and REMEMBER the UNIT 4 Exam is REQUIRED for everyone. It has some comprehensive concept questions on it.  If you don't take the UNIT 4 EXAM, you get a 0 on it and that 0 will not be dropped from your grades!! 
  • UNIT 4 opens TUESDAY, MAY 4TH (but will be open earlier for early birds who want to work ahead!): Covers chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13, along with all required videos and assessments. If it says required, it's ON THE EXAM! You only have 13 days to complete this unit!    Note: Your unit will be open before this date so you can work ahead!
  • YOUR SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY QUESTIONS IN THE TEMPLATE AT DUE IN THE STEP #6 DROP BOX IN THE SERVICE PROJECT FOLDER NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MAY 7TH 11:55 PM.  Be sure your work is well edited and that you have cited your textbook examples in item #3.  The #3 question is worth 30% of your grade so don’t forget to do it!

  • UNIT 4 REQUIRED READING QUIZ over chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13 due THURSDAY MAY 13TH by 11:55 pm. Two attempts on this quiz and the extra credit points (1/2 your earned score!).  Study hard and do well!  Reminder: You only get ONE attempt on UNIT 4 EXAM and it is REQUIRED!!
  • REQUIRED UNIT 4 COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM and UNIT 4, as well as this course are CLOSED by FRIDAY, MAY 14th 8:00 am.  Exam 4 is over Unit 4 chapters 10, 11, 12, 13, films, articles  and assessments,  and about 20 Comprehensive questions.  THIS EXAM IS REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE. If you miss this exam, you will get a ZERO ON IT and may fail this course! BE SURE YOU DO THIS EXAM!  It's not droppable!
  • Final grades posted FRIDAY MORNING, MAY 14th by NOON in WEBADVISOR. Your final grade is the grade column you can find in MY GRADES that says “FINAL GRADE WITH EXTRA CREDIT”!

  • 4 COURSE UNITS including:

    • Unit 2 comprised of chapters 3, 4 and 5, short videos, discussion
    • Unit 3 comprised of chapters 6 & 7, and 8 & 9, a major film, short videos, 2 articles and UNIT 2 Discussion over PERSUASION, CONFORMITY, GROUP PRESSURE, LEADERSHIP, and OBEDIENCE and the over the MAJOR FILM, short films and article.  Why did this happen, what do you think you would have done, and what have you done in your life when group pressure would you have you done? 
    • Unit 4 comprised of chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13, short videos, one major film, discussion.

  • 2 UNIT DISCUSSIONS due 1 or 2 days before UNIT EXAMS: REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE
    • Unit 1 Discussion is an introduction of yourself and comments on our first film called A CLASS DIVIDED, and at least ONE RESPONSE to another student: Worth 20 points
    • Unit 3 Discussion is HARDER! You will have a film to watch HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS and short videos, along with an article to read on ABU GHRAIB. Respond to one student: What would you do?  Worth 35 points
  • 4 READING QUIZZES due 1 day before your UNIT EXAMS: REQUIRED for everyone! 
    • Unit 1 READING QUIZ is over chapters 1, and  2: worth 10 pts (10 questions, 5 per chapter)
    •  Unit 2 READING QUIZ is over chapters 3, 4 & 5:  worth 15 pts (15 questions, 5 approx per chapter)
    •  UNIT 3 READING QUIZ over chapters 6 & 7, 8 & 9.  Worth 20 pts (20 questions, 5 per chapter)
    • UNIT 4 READING QUIZ over chapters  10, 11, 12 & 13 worth 20 points (20 questions, 5 per chapter)
    • The four READING QUIZZES are a total of 65 points.  Again, these are required for everyone! NO DROPS!
    • NOTE: Remember, the READING QUIZZES are REQUIRED AND EARN YOU POINTS! But, you get EXTRA CREDIT points at the same time…1/2 your earned score! So it you get a 20 on it, you get 10 extra credit points! If you get a 12 on it, you get 6! No drops allowed on reading quizzes! You must take all four!

  • 4 UNIT EXAMS including Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 EXAMS, covering all chapters in the unit and all films, handouts (anything that says it's required will be on your exam).
    • Exams will have 40 to 50 questions, be timed and have a final closing due date. If you miss an exam, it's a 0 and that is the exam that will be dropped. You get to drop your lowest of the first 3 exams, while exam 4 is required as it has some comprehensive concept questions on it.   If you miss an exam in Unit 1, 2 or 3, that's a 0 and that's your DROPPED EXAM.  You may not miss more than one exam in this course in the first 3 units only!  
    • EXAM 1 will allow you to have TWO ATTEMPTS on the exam, just in case this is your first time to take an online exam. The grade book is automatically set to take the highest score.
    • Unit 2, 3 and 4 exams will allow only ONE ATTEMPT, so be ready to take it.
    • UNIT 4 IS REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE! One attempt and has comprehensive questions on it!
    • Again, you will have a total of FOUR POSSIBLE EXAM SCORES.  The grade book automatically DROPS your LOWEST OF the 1st three exams. UNIT 4 EXAM is required as it has some basic course concept questions.   If you miss an exam in Units 1, 2 or 3, that is your DROPPED EXAM. I don't do make-ups except in very RARE and EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES!   YOU MUST TAKE EXAM 4, and missing that exam will be a 0 in your course average! Do not FORGET!
  • YOUR SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY QUESTIONS and TOPIC are REQUIRED by the State of Texas.  You can find these in the COMMON ASSESSMENT SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY FOLDER in the MENU LIST to the LEFT of your HOMESCREEN!  This assignment includes:
    • 1 SERVICE PROJECT TOPIC SUBMISSION i(10 points) in WEEK 2 of the class
    • 1 SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY QUESTIONS in the TEMPLATE provided for you.
    • PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to volunteer at this time due to COVID RESTRICTIONS.

  • EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES: You may earn UP TO, but NOT MORE THAN 40 extra credit points in the following ways. 
      • There are up to 40 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS allowed for this class. You get ½ your earned score on your READING QUIZZES! Each quiz is worth 20 points and you can get UP TO 10 points extra credits on each quiz. So lets say you got an 16 on your quiz, that would give you 8 extra credit points. 
      • As well, You can also make a donation of food, gift cards or cash to the AC PANTRY or your local food bank.  To get credit, you must download a copy of the PANTRY RECEIPT AND your FOOD PURCHASE RECEIPT in the EXTRA CREDIT DROP BOX to verify your DONATION.    Note: You can’t get more than 40 extra credit points in this course as a combination of reading quiz points and food donation.
      • So let's say you had 26 points on the total of your four practice quizzes, you could also donate $14.00 worth of food to the pantry for the rest of the 40 extra credit points, as an example. The donation is optional, but you do get the benefit of extra credit on your reading quizzes!

WEEK TO WEEK SCHEDULE: STAY ON TRACK and REMEMBER YOUR DUE DATES! 

In WEEK 1 you will need to

  1. Print your calendar, Unit 1 Exam Study guide, THEORY HANDOUT, power point lecture notes if you want, and the SERVICE PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS SHEET.  Download the TEMPLATE and save it to your computer, where you will write your essay! 
  2. You will have a paper in this course and you will be getting the instructions for that paper in the next week or so. Be sure you read it through and follow all instructions.
  3. FROM YOUR BLACKBOARD EMAIL IN THE CLASS, YOU WILL EMAIL YOUR INSTRUCTOR!  
    1. Go to the ONLINE CLASS, select SEND EMAIL from the MENU LIST to the left of the screen
    2. Put your name in the subject line,
    3. Select from SENT TO list: INSTRUCTORS IN THE COURSE
    4. Let me know in your email, your name, this class (SOCIAL PSY), best phone number and times to get you, and when you might be able to meet online (mornings night, weekend) for Q and A in this course!
  4. Review your online syllabus and then take the REQUIRED quiz BY THE DUE DATE! Failure to take this quiz may result in being withdrawn from the course!  YOU HAVE TO BE WORKING in the class to be counted as attending! It's not enough to simply log in.
  5. TAKE a LOOK AT UNIT 1 DISCUSSION this week, so you can be thinking about your discussion answers as you read chapters 1, and 2!
  6. READ CHAPTER 1 this week and fill out study guide and outline your chapters! WOW!  1/8th of the way there!
  7. Watch THE CLASS DIVIDED VIDEO, as well as all the short videos that say required.  TAKE PARTICULAR TIME with CH 1 and CH 2 over the information on SCIENCE and SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY!  There are several questions over SCIENCE on the quizzes and EXAM!

In WEEK 2 you will be doing the following!

  1. Make sure you send the email by SUNDAY NIGHT of WEEK 1!  Make sure you take the SYLLABUS QUIZ by MONDAY night of WEEK 2!! YOU must do the syllabus quiz to be counted as working in the class on the census! You can lose your financial aid for not completing these first two assignments!
  2. Read Chapter 2 and watch THE CLASS DIVIDED video!  Fill out your study guide!  SCIENCE, WHEN DONE WELL, is AMAZING!  Be sure you take a look at and REVIEW YOUR THEORY HANDOUT!!
  3. Complete the UNIT 1 DISCUSSION and respond to at least 1 to 2 other student(s). BE SURE YOU EDIT YOUR WORK and, WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT USE TEXTING LANGUAGE! THIS IS A COLLEGE LEVEL ESSAY, not a TEXT MESSAGE TO YOUR FRIENDS!  You will lose a lot of points for not editing your grammar, spelling and writing mechanics. Be sure you answer all the questions being asked!  
  4. Take the UNIT 1 READING QUIZ by the due date! REQUIRED over chaps 1 & 2, 10 questions, 10 points
  5. The UNIT 1 EXAM is due MONDAY, WEEK 3!  You can take it early and start UNIT 2 RIGHT AWAY!

In WEEK 3, it's a busy week and it's time to

  1. Take UNIT 1 EXAM by MONDAY night! UNIT 1 is now closed.  Remember, Unit 1 exam has TWO ATTEMPTS, so don't wait until the last minute to take it. If you do, then you can't use your second attempt if you do poorly. YOU MAY NOT REVIEW THE EXAM QUESTIONS IN BETWEEN ATTEMPTS! You can review the exam AFTER THE DUE DATE AND TIME and when the exam is closed for everyone. 
  2. BE SURE YOU TAKE THE UNIT 1 EXAM (REQUIRED) by the due date!.
  3. Read Chapter 3 and start chapter 4 over the HEURISTICS and MENTAL SHORTCUTS, as well as OVER THE SELF and how we form self concepts! Fill out those study guides! 

In WEEK 4 you will be halfway home, so you will

  1. UNIT 2 is a very short time frame! 
  2. Finish reading chapters 4 and then move onto CHAPTER 5 over how we make social judgments related to our own and others behaviors.  Be sure you watch the videos over the FUNDAMENTAL ATTRIBUTION ERROR and how we explain our OWN and OTHER'S BEHAVIORS! This is a very important concept in SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY!   It's especially important right now given the current political climate where we have a leader who refers to people with name calling, shaming and blame for all wrongs:  These people are "EVIL and ANGRY and DANGEROUS"! 
  3. Take the UNIT 2 READING QUIZ REQUIRED by due date.  Its 15 questions, 5 questions per chapter and worth 15 points. Remember, you get extra credit for this too!
  4. Take the UNIT 2 EXAM over all chapters, films and handouts.  YOU ONLY GET 1 ATTEMPT SO BE READY!
  5. UNIT 3 opens up this week!  PRINT OFF YOUR UNIT 3 STUDY GUIDE, and fill it out while you read.  Print off ppt slides if you want, and any other required handouts. Be sure you watch all films.
  6. Read your UNIT 3 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS about ATTITUDES AND PERSUASION and watch the MOVIE, the short videos and read the required ARTICLE.  Do this BEFORE YOU READ THESE CHAPTERS so you can be watching and reading in a critical mode to answer the questions being asked!
  7. Read chapters 6 and 7 together over the next week!   
  8. Be sure you are working on your SERVICE PROJECT!

In WEEK 5, you are over the hump, but you have 8 more chapters and two discussions, so no slacking!   This week you will:

  1. Take the UNIT 2 EXAM over all chapters, films and handouts.  YOU ONLY GET 1 ATTEMPT SO BE READY!
  2. UNIT 3 opens up this week!  PRINT OFF YOUR UNIT 3 STUDY GUIDE, and fill it out while you read.  Print off ppt slides if you want, and any other required handouts. Be sure you watch all films.
  3. Read your UNIT 3 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS about ATTITUDES AND PERSUASION and watch the MOVIE, the short videos and read the required ARTICLE.  Do this BEFORE YOU READ THESE CHAPTERS so you can be watching and reading in a critical mode to answer the questions being asked!

You only have a few days to finish Unit 3 in WEEK 6!
  2. Be sure you read your UNIT 3 DISCUSSION (worth 35 points)

In WEEK 6, YIKES!  KICK IT IN GEAR!  You will need to

  1. READ CHAPTERS 8 and 9 and watch the short films, the HUMAN BEHAVIOR EXPERIMENTS film and the ARTICLE. 
  2. COMPLETE the UNIT 3 discussion and edit it well for your writing mechanics, grammar, spelling, etc. BE SURE YOU POST to at least 1 to 2 other students in a substantive way!  DO NOT USE TEXTING LANGUAGE! THIS IS A COLLEGE LEVEL ESSAY!
  3. COMPLETE UNIT 3 READING QUIZ over chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9.
  4. Take UNIT 3 EXAM by DUE DATE, 11:55 pm!  Remember, this exam has ONLY 1 ATTEMPT!
  5. UNIT 4 opens up and covers chapters 10, 11, 12, and 13.  !  Keep moving by printing off your UNIT 4 study guide, your ppt lecture notes, if you want!  Remember, you have only 14 days for this whole unit!  DO NOT SLOW DOWN!!!!!  You have 14 days for this final unit!  KEEP GOING!
  6. REMINDER: Finish your community service and START YOUR ESSAY!  It's DUE AT THE END OF NEXT WEEK! I don't take ANY LATE WORK FOR ANY REASON!  Get it done! NO EXCUSES!

In WEEK 7, well, you are almost there! WHEW! Keep going!

  1. Take UNIT 3 EXAM by DUE DATE, 11:55 pm!  Remember, this exam has ONLY 1 ATTEMPT!
  2. UNIT 4 opens up and covers chapters 10, 11, 12, and 13.  !  Keep moving by printing off your UNIT 4 study guide, your ppt lecture notes, if you want!  Remember, you have only 14 days for this whole unit!  DO NOT SLOW DOWN!!!!!  You have 14 days for this final unit!  KEEP GOING!
  3. REMINDER: FINISH UP YOUR ESSAY  It's DUE this week on FRIDAY!!!! I don't take ANY LATE WORK FOR ANY REASON!  Get it done! NO EXCUSES!
  4. Reading chapters 10 and 11 over PREJUDICE and AGGRESSION ..who do we hate and why, and who do we hurt and why?
  5. Watch the short films, look at your power point notes, etc and fill out your study guides.  
  6. Start reading chapters 12 and 13 over LOVE AND LIKING and then PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOR (what we call altruism.  Fill out those study guides.

In WEEK 8, you are ready to crash and burn, but a few more things to finish up, such as

  1. Read chapter 12 and 13 over LOVE AND LIKING and PRO SOCIAL BEHAVIOR, fill out that study guide! Watch the short videos and do any of the required assessments!
  2. Turn in EXTRA CREDIT DOCUMENTATION by TUESDAY, if you are going to donate to the pantry or your local food bank! I need your AC PANTRY or FOOD BANK receipt along with your food purchase receipt!  Take a phone photo and upload into the EXTRA CREDIT DROP BOX. See the link on the MENU to the left of your HOMEPAGE online! 
  3. By THURSDAY NIGHT, 11:55 pm finish up your UNIT 4 READING QUIZ over chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13.  It's worth 20 points!  You are almost there!!!  ½ your score gets extra credit for you!!! DO WELL!
  4. By FRIDAY MORNING, 8:00 am: UNIT 4 EXAM IS DUE!  CONGRATS! YOU ARE DONE!
  5. By FRIDAY, noon, your final grades will be submitted.  YOUR FINAL GRADES WITH EXTRA CREDIT COLUMN in your MY GRADES is the GRADE YOU GET IN THIS CLASS! 
    1. If you are on the "line" between two grades, I always give the higher grade IF YOU HAVE DONE ALL YOUR WORK, taken advantage of the extra credit practice quizzes and am a student in good standing!  If you've slacked off a bunch and are missing assignments, your grade will be the lower of the two!  GET IT DONE! EVERY POINT COUNTS IN THIS CLASS!

Scale:  89.45 – 100.00 Plus = A         79.45-89.44 = B          69.45-79.44 = C 

                                             49.45 – 69.44 = D    AND BELOW 49.45 IS AN F

YOUR FINAL GRADE WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:

  • EMAIL to INSTRUCTOR WITH CONTACT INFORMATION = 10 points
  • SYLLABUS QUIZ = 10 pts
  • UNITS 1 Discussion (worth 20 points) and Unit 3 Discussion (worth 35 points ) =  55 points total
  • UNITS 1, 2, 3 and 4 READING QUIZZES =
    • Unit 1 Reading quiz is worth 10 points.
    • Unit 2 Reading Quiz is worth 15 points
    • Units 3 and 4 Reading Quizzes are worth 20 points each.  TOTAL POINTS: 65
    • You also get ½ your score for extra credit; So if you got 16 points out of 20, you would get 8 extra credit points. DO THE BEST YOU CAN on your reading quizzes, they will help you! final grade!   NOTE: You can also donate to the AC FOOD PANTRY ($1 food or gift card dontation = 1 points).  So let’s say you got a total of 8 points on the first quiz, you would get 4 extra credit points.  Then let’s say you have a total of 30 points. You could donate another $10 to the food bank for extra points.
  • UNITS 1, 2, and 3 Exams (100 points each) and the grade book is set to drop the lowest exam score of these 3 exams.  Then, the UNIT 4 FINAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM (100 points) IS REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE!  If you miss this exam, it’s a 0! NO DROP! Again, our gradebook will drop the lowest exam grade from UN ITS 1, 2, and 3 and UNIT 4 EXAM is REQUIRED for everyone = 100 points. 
                • TOTAL EXAM POINTS = 300 points.
  • SERVICE PROJECT TOPIC: By Thursday of week 2, submit the TOPIC and AGENCY-PROGRAM you are looking into for your SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY QUESTIONS.     = 10 points
  • SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY:  By THURSDAY of week 7 submit the 5 ESSAY QUESTIONS in the TEMPLATE PROVIDED YOU, well written, well edited and citations in ITEM #3 (at least 2)  = 100 points
    • NOTE: You can send your ESSAY to the WRITER’S CORNER For help by their tutors.  Have them send me an email and you will get an extra 10 points on your paper for your tutoring!
  • EXTRA CREDIT is voluntary= Up to 40 pts added to your points total,  can be comprised of
    • Up to 40 points for the UNITS 1-4 READING QUIZZES.
    •  You can combine this with your donation to the AC Pantry or local food bank.
    • So LET’S SAY you got a total of 28 extra credit points on your reading quiz (1/2 the earned score) then you can donate an extra $12.00 food to the FOOD BANK for a total of 40 extra credit points. NOTE:  YOU CANNOT HAVE MORE THAN 40 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS TOTAL! This can help you with a low score or if you missed a reading quiz or discussion.  
    • In order to get your points:  You must submit a JPG PHOTO (from your phone!!!) of your PANTRY/FOOD BANK receipt AND your purchase receipt.  REMEMBER, you cannot get more than 40 extra credit points TOTAL, but this can help offset a low score!

 TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE:  = 550 points (plus, you can get up to, but not more than 40 extra credit.)

HOW TO VIEW "YOUR GRADES & FEEDBACK" in "MY GRADES: Keep track of your GRADE!

Keep up with your grades. To see your grades and any feedback from me on your assignments (discussions and your service project essay) do the following:

  1. Click on MY GRADES in the MENU list to the left of your COURSE HOMEPAGE online!
  2. Go down the list of items to find the ASSIGNMENT or TEST, etc that you want to look at. It will show you your grade there.
  3. To view comments from your instructor, click on COMMENTS. To view the grade scoring system (CALLED A RUBRIC), click on VIEW RUBRIC.  You will want to view this when you look at your SERVICE PROJECT ESSAY!  Discussions will have comments but no rubric. Be sure you read comments about your work. APPLY FEEDBACK SUGGESTIONS! This will help your grades.
  4. Keeping up with your grades can inspire you to work harder and find better ways to study!
     

A FEW TIPS TO SUCCEED IN ONLINE and ON CAMPUS COURSES

  • We know a lot about what allows students to succeed in college courses! Here are a few tips for you to consider:
    • FOLLOW YOUR CALENDAR and have some type of TIME MANAGEMENT SYSTEM that reminds you of due dates!  I send out reminders to your email, but you should be in the habit of GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. Develop something that works for you!  Our technology gives us a natural advantage in that!
    • WORK AHEAD: In this class, units will be opened early. WORK AHEAD. Get things done early in the class!  I promise PROCRASTINATION IS THE WORST STRATEGY YOU CAN HAVE FOR COLLEGE LEVEL CLASSES and ONLINE COURSES ESPECIALLY! 
    • BE THERE! CHECK IN: Go online, if this is an online course, at least 2 to 3 times a week.  Studies show that people, who frequent their online classes, do better than those that check in infrequently.  PRETEND THIS IS A REAL CLASS, even if it's "VIRTUAL"!  If this is IN CLASS as an on campus course, BE IN CLASS!  Attendance and success in the class are POSITIVELY RELATED! The better the attendance, the better the grade!
    • NEW TERRITORY: Forget how you studied in high school! If you are new to college, throw away your "HIGH SCHOOL ROAD MAP".  It won't work here!  It takes some time to get these skills!  We can help you!  We want you to be successful and achieve your DREAMS!
    • LOTS OF FOLKS WANT TO HELP: Use our resources including our WRITER'S CORNER, COUNSELING SERVICES, and RESOURCE CENTER (if you need social services, we have somebody to help you with all that with the AC PANTRY and other things!), and FINANCIAL AID. 
    • HELP WITH BLACKBOARD:  If you do not understand HOW TO USE BLACKBOARD, go to the WARE CENTER on WASHINGTON STREET CAMPUS and get with the SUPPORT CENTER folks who will TEACH YOU HOW TO DO THIS!  You have to know how to access things to be successful!  We have lots of people to help you with this!
    • BE PERSISTENT!  Only 1 in 4 AMERICAN ADULTS has a college education. This is not meant to be easy!  It's hard and it takes building skills, and STICKING TO IT!  YOU CAN DO IT1

HOW TO REVIEW YOUR EXAMS AND QUIZZES, and GRADED ASSIGNMENTS:   You can REVIEW YOUR EXAMS AND QUIZZES ONCE THE DUE DATE AND TIME HAS PASSED.
