Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Elementary concepts of geometry, probability and statistics, as well as applications of the algebraic properties of real numbers to concepts of measurement with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking.

Notebook paper, pencils, erasers, straight edge, five dividers and one three ring binder (1.5"- 2" recommended).

Calculator: Students will need a graphing calculator for this course. The recommended calculator is a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus. Other forms of Texas Instruments or Casio graphing calculators will be permitted at the instructor’s discretion. Note that no TI-89s or TI-Nspires will be permitted. There are FREE APPS available on your smartphone device that will resemble the TI-84 calculator (Calculate 84). Please note, that although you can use these in the classroom, you cannot use them on a monitored exam. You can also check with the Math Academic Success Center for calculators available for rental.

Internet Access: Students need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection to complete online homework assignments, attend virtual meetings, and access a printer to produce class notes and other handouts.

Printer: Printers are available in the Math Academic Sucess Center located in Durrett Hall 104 or the Underground located in the basement of the Ware Building. Hours of operation are located on their AC web page.

College ID: Students need an official Amarillo College student ID to scan into the Underground and Outreach Center and to present in the Math Testing Lab before each exam.

Learning Objectives: After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics:

  1. Apply fundamental terms of geometry such as points, lines, and planes to describe two and three dimensional figures.
  2. Make and test conjectures about figures and geometric relationships.
  3. Use a variety of methods to identify and justify congruency and similarity of geometric objects. 
  4. Perform geometric transformations.
  5. Demonstrate fundamental probability techniques and apply those techniques to solve problems.
  6. Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  7. Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
  8. Perform measurement processes and explain the concept of a unit of measurement.
  9. Develop and use formulas for the perimeter, area, and volume for a variety of figures

Expected Student Behavior

Scholastic Dishonesty: Cheating is defined in Webster's College Dictionary as "taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers." Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student's paper, copying from the homework solutions manual, or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz. If the proctor sees a cell phone out during any exam, the proctor will assume that student is cheating and the exam will be taken up and a grade of "F" will be received for the course.

Grading Criteria

Grading Policy:  Your grade (90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 60-69% D, less than 60 F) will be determined using the following weights:

MML Homework: Expect to have homework each day. Late homework will not be accepted.  Due dates are given in MyMathLab and on the Calendar.  Calendars and due dates are set on the very first day of the course so you will know what assignments are due at all times. You can always finish assignments before the due date, not after. You may print these assignments from MML or write down the problems on any type of paper for your notebook. 

Reviews: Reviews were specifically designed to inform you of whether you are prepared for the exam. You must have a completed review to take your exam in the Math Testing Center. 

Major Exams:  Four major exams will be given and will be completed throughout the course. Exams will be completed outside of class in the Math Testing Center. No late exams will be given, no matter the reason. If you know in advance that you will be gone during the assigned exam dates, you can take your exam early! No exam grades are dropped. 

Mandatory Tutoring: If a major exam causes your average to drop below 75, a minimum of one hour must be spent in the Math Academic Success Center working on homework or review. 

Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be due Wednesday, December 11th by 10:00pm. If your final is higher than your lowest unit exam, the final will replace it. 

Attendance

Attendance:  If for some reason you stop working on this course and decide that you do not have time because of other commitments, please remember to officially withdraw “W” from this course.  To officially withdraw "W", you must visit with your professor personally and obtain a signed "Withdrawal Approval Form". You may e-mail to request this.  This signed form must be submitted to the Registrar by Wednesday, December 4, 2024.  This is the last date that you can withdraw “W” from this course this semester.
