Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered.
2. Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue and organ functions in each system.

4. Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.

1. Electronic devices: I would ask you to show common courtesy for your fellow students and your instructor and either turn off phones, or place on “silent” mode during class unless there is a cell phone assignment. If you have a pressing need, please excuse yourself quietly and take care of it. No cells phones out in sight or on at all, when exams/quizzes are present in class.

2. Major exam protocol (Lecture Exams and Lab Practical’s): Respondus lockdown browser and webcam will be used to take exams remotely. If you do not have a computer equipped to do this, the underground on Washington campus is available to you for this purpose. You also have the option to take exams at the Science Testing Center.

Exam testing procedures when remote: The following table lists conduct requirements for online exams, as well as consequences for conduct violations:

Exam conduct requirement	Consequence for violation of exam conduct
Valid photo ID shown	Students must show a valid photo ID before taking the exam (AC ID is acceptable) otherwise a zero may result. A zero will be given for the exam until student identity is confirmed by a valid photo ID.
Correct placement of webcam	The webcam must be placed such that the student is in the full frame of the window during the entire test. Student with incorrect webcam placements will receive a warning for the first time. After the first warning, a 30% penalty will occur for each exam done improperly.
Complete environment scan	An incomplete or insufficient scan of the testing environment is not acceptable. Student with an incomplete or insufficient scan will receive a warning for the first time. After the first warning, a 30% penalty will occur for each exam done improperly.
Microphone turned on and recording	Microphone must be turned on and recording throughout the entire exam.
Sufficient lighting of the testing environment	Sufficient lighting for the instructor to see the student and assess the testing environment is required.
Student remains in webcam view during exam	A student who leaves the webcam view during an exam for any reason will receive a zero for that exam.
No unauthorized materials near desk area	A student who has any unauthorized materials (books, notes, blank paper, phone, another computer, etc.) near the testing area will receive a zero for that exam.
No talking with others during the exam or playing of music or other audio recordings.	A student who has any music or audio recordings playing during exams, or who talks with any adult for any reason during the exam, will receive a zero for that exam. No headphones allowed.

Exam testing procedures at the Science Testing Center (STC): The student testing center will be open Monday-Friday 9am-10pm and Saturday 9am-7:30pm. Students will have to make an appointment to test by accessing the link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040845adad2ba0fe3-science or scanning the QR code to the right.

3. Cheating: Honesty and ethical behaviors are imperatives in any career. Therefore, cheating will not be tolerated. Amarillo College’s “Student Code of Conduct” will apply to all work in this course. On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract. Included in the contract is the following statement: "I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic ‘F’ in the course. This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed.” You will not be allowed to take your tests until this contract is signed and on file in the Science Testing Center. Cheating on a test includes all of the following:

• Copying from another student’s paper.
• Using test materials not authorized by the person administering the test.
• Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test without permission from the test administrator.
• Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of an unadministered test.
• The unauthorized transporting or removal, in whole or in part, of the contents of the unadministered test.
• Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for one’s self, to take a test.
• Bribing another person to obtain an unadministered test or information about an unadministered test.
• The use of any testing materials that are prohibited.

Students will be expected to follow the safety rules and to notify the instructor immediately if any accident occurs. While the risk is minimized as much as possible, there is the potential for contact with electrical appliances, sharp instruments, chemicals, and organic materials, some of which may be biohazardous. Any student deemed to be jeopardizing the safety of others will be asked to leave the lab immediately and possibly permanently. Other safety rules are found in the Laboratory Manual and will be covered on the first day of class. Proper attire is required to participate in lab, including gloves, goggles and lab coat or apron. Improper attire may result in removal from the lab and a zero for any participation or exam grade given that day.

Grading Criteria

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS/EXAMINATIONS: Each week, the student will have 3 hours of lecture and 3 hours of laboratory. The lecture accounts for 55% of the final grade, laboratory section accounts for 25% of the final grade and a comprehensive final exam will account forl 20% of the overall grade.

Lecture exams: Lecture exams, case studies, homeworks, and quizzes make up 55% of the total grade for the semester. Five  exams will be given, covering both lecture and reading material. Each exam will be worth 100 points, the lowest exam grade will be dropped. This means each exam will be worth 9% of your overall grade for a combined 36%. Lecture quizzes will be given once or twice a week at the beginning of class. You will have 5 minutes to complete each quiz. Late arrivals to class may miss the quiz and earn a zero for the quiz that day. The average of your 10 highest quiz grades will be equal to one major exam or 9% of your overall grade. Note: the remaining class time will be lecture on the next unit of material. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP EXAMS OR QUIZZES. A missed exam becomes a zero or the dropped grade, and a missed quiz becomes a zero. Assignments consisting of After-class quizzes will be worth 5% and Video Quizzes will be worth another 5% for an overall total of 55% of your overall grade being composed of lecture material.

 

Withdrawal Process

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must consult with their instructor first. Students can either communicate via email or meet face-to-face with their instructor to begin the withdrawal process. If the instructor and the student both agree that withdrawal is the appropriate course of action, then the instructor will initiate a withdrawal case for the student in the Retention Alert System (AC Connect).

Dropping courses before you reach the 60% point of the semester could result in you having to pay back some of your financial aid funds. To determine this date for you specific classes login to AC Connect, click Self Service menu, click My Academic Profile, click My Important Course Section Dates. 

Students will receive confirmation that their withdrawal request has been completed. The Registrar’s Office will process the withdrawal and notify both the student and instructor via AC email.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  It is therefore the responsibility of the student to attend class. Absences result in zeros for any missed quizzes, exams, presentations or participation grades. If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course, you will receive an “F” for the course. A grade of “W” will be given for student-initiated drops or withdrawals. Texas law now mandates that students may only drop or withdraw 6 times in their entire college careers, excluding drops prior to the census date.

CLASS WEBSITE: AC Online is utilized in this class as a grade book and e-mail system. There may be quizzes and other assignments to be completed through AC Online. I will post announcements, lecture and lab handouts, photos, and other important material via AC Online. The login for AC Online is the same as with WebAdvisor. If you do not have a computer or internet access at home, you have available to you the computer lab on campus in the library second floor.

Grievance Procedure: If a student has a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor. If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Biology Department Chairperson, the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Vice President of Academic Affairs and the college President, IN THAT ORDER.
