Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisite: INMT 1305 and ELPT 1311 - minimum grade of C

Course Description

Basic fluid power course covering pneumatic and hydraulic systems, fluid power symbols, operating theory, components, vacuum and hydraulics, and basic electrical and manual controls.

Expected Student Behavior

Department Expectations

All students in Technical Education are expected to abide by the Professional Code of Conduct.  A copy is available on the main content page of the Blackboard course.  Students will not be able to attend courses if not in compliance by the third class day.

 

Communication

The instructor will use AC email as the primary means of communicating with students.  Students are responsible for e-mail messages sent to their AC email account; thus, students are responsible to check their AC email accounts.  The instructor will only respond to emails sent from the student’s official AC email account and that identify the applicable class in the subject line or first sentence of the email.  Further, emails should be professional using proper spelling, grammar, style and format, if the student expects a response.

 

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is vital.  Any acts of academic dishonesty will be penalized severely.  The instructor has a zero tolerance policy in regard to academic dishonesty.

Each student’s grade will be based upon his/her performance on each of the course sections.  The course has five sections as follows:

Grading Scale:  A = 90 to 100, B = 80 to 89, C = 70 to 79, D = 60 to 69, F = Below 60

 

Participation

Students are expected to participate in class.  Class participation includes asking relevant questions, adding to class discussions, participating in any group work, and otherwise contributing to the educational experience of the class.  Absences will result in a grade of zero for the day.

Student should keep a well organized notebook for the class.  This notebook should include course notes, laboratory assignments and rubrics, returned homework, and relevant course handouts.  

 

Homework Assignments

Homework will be assigned from the textbook material and additional handouts.  Students should complete all required performance tasks on time and at the required mastery level.  Lab projects, and various assignments will be scored based on accuracy, neatness, completeness, skill, and level of detail.

All problems must be worked out and complete.  Formulas and calculations must be included for each answer.  Homework questions should be written out and the answer provided below the question.  Work that is illegible or unprofessional will not be graded and will receive a zero.  Unless the instructor specifies otherwise, all homework is due the first day of class each week. 

Write neatly and take pride in your work.

Late Work

Students are expected to complete assignments in a timely fashion.  Late assignments will have a 25% late penalty for every class day it is late. Late work will not be accepted after two weeks. 

 

Laboratory

The lab portion of the class is very important to the understanding of fluid power. Once a lab assignment is completed by the class, we will move to the next assignment.  Students who are absent will not be able to make up a lab assignment once the class has completed that assignments. Your attendance is critical to your success in the lab.

Lab Rules

1. Safety glasses will be worn at all times when working on lab projects.

2. Do not allow oil to drip on Lab-Volt manuals, wipe hands off before turning manual pages.  Keep manuals clean as possible.

3. Read all the information at the beginning of each lab exercise before beginning lab work.

4. Follow each step in the manual carefully, do not skip steps.

5. Remove caps in hydraulic hose quick disconnects carefully.  Do not damage or lose caps.  Install caps back in quick disconnects when storing hoses.

6. Do not lay hoses on tables or other surface areas. Any hoses not being used should be stored away properly in trainer hose racks.

7. Wipe oil off of each component when storing and wipe work station down when lab is complete.

8. Keep oil wiped up on floors and avoid allowing hoses to drip on the floor when installing or storing.

9. Secure all components properly on trainer top when working on lab projects and secure them on sliding drawers when storing.

10. Shut the power unit off before connecting or disconnecting hoses and components.

 

Exams

Three Exams will be given during the semester.  The Safety Exam will be calculated with your lab exercises.  The mid-term and final will be worth 20% each.  Each exam is designed to assess your understanding of, and the ability to apply, the textbook material, theories, and concepts related to the course.  Exams will have multiple choice questions, true and false questions, and problems to solve.  The Final Exam is comprehensive and will cover the entire course.  A student must take the Final Exam to pass the course.

The exams can be made up for legitimate medical reasons only.   Travel for business or pleasure or lack of planning on the part of the student will not warrant a make-up exam. No final make-up exam will be given after the last day of class.

 

Instructor's Statement

As your instructor, I am always willing to discuss your grades with you and explain how your grade was determined.  If a grading error has been made on my part, I am always willing to correct the error.

 

Attendance

Attendance is a requirement, and obligation for learning. Please remember the deadline for dropping a class at AC is published in the official Amarillo College Schedule of Classes and is May 5th for this semester.  If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an “F” for the course.

The attendance in the course will be monitored through the Blackboard system. A sign-out sheet will be provided at the end of each class.  If you leave early without the consent of the instructor, you will be counted absent for the day. An early leave will be deducted the same amount as a tardy.

If a student misses class, it is his/her responsibility to get the notes from a classmate before the next class.
