Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

Student Performance

Course Requirements:

  • Achieved at least 90% on the Dosage and Solution Exam prior to administering medications in the clinical setting.  Students will have up to three (3) attempts on the Dosage and Solution Exam each semester. Students who do not achieve 90% or greater on the first scheduled test and first retake test will be required to review the questions they missed with the instructor and placed on contract for self-directed remediation. Students must pass a dosage calculation/mediation administration test at 90% or higher prior to the scheduled date of clinical. Failure to obtain a 90% or higher after three unsuccessful attempts will result in course failure.
  • Proof of current immunizations, including varicella, and American Heart Association CPR certification as documented the ADN Student Handbook.  These must be done and recorded before the clinical experience. All immunizations, TB skin test and CPR must be current on the first day of class and remain current throughout the semester. A Class II Clinical Warning will be issued for no documentation or expired immunizations.  
  • Completion of all required clinical hours, clinical competencies, and clinical assignments.
  • Satisfactory participation and completion of all pre-simulation assignments and clinical simulations.
  1. Satisfactory completion of any student/instructor contracts.
  2. RNSG 2360 Clinical – Nursing Concepts IV and RNSG 2439 Healthcare Concepts IV must be taken concurrently and both courses must be satisfactorily completed in the same semester.

  • Practice nursing within an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards, regulation, and requirements in the critical care environment.
  • Analyze own continuing competency needs in critical care nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for quality nursing care following evidence-based practice of critically ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.

Provider of Patient-Centered Care

  • Implements strategies, processes and procedures to and functions with increased autonomy to assist in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of the health of critically ill patients and their families.
  • Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning based on analysis of comprehensive assessment data to plan holistic patient-centered care for critically-ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments in the critical care environment.
  • Apply nursing concepts specific to meeting the unique psychosocial needs of critically-ill patients who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments and their families.
  • Apply effective health teaching strategies in the care of critically-ill patients and their families.
  • Utilize both basic and advanced nursing skills competently in the care of critically-ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.
  • Demonstrate respect and compassionate behaviors using appropriate communication skills in the care of critically ill patients and their families within the critical care environment regardless of culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, identity, spirituality or disability.  
  • Utilize available human, information and physical resources in meeting the needs of critically-ill patients and their families for comprehensive, quality care.

Patient Safety Advocate

  • Utilize evidence-based practice data to improve the safety and quality of patient-centered care for the critically ill patient who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.
  • Practice according to the regulations of the Texas Nursing Practice Act and Texas Board of Nursing Rules to promote and ensure patient safety in critical care environments.

Member of the Healthcare Team

  • Coordinate, collaborate and communicate in a timely manner with patients, families and the interdisciplinary team to promote and provide quality, holistic patient-centered care for the critically ill   patient who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving treatments.
  • Participates as needed with health care teams during local or global health emergencies or pandemics to promote health and safety, and prevent disease.
  • Utilize information systems and technology to efficiently manage and improve holistic patient-centered care for critically-ill patients who require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, hemodynamic monitoring and other lifesaving devices.
  • Coordinate the nursing care of other team members through effective assignment, delegation of nursing activities and supervision in the critical care environment.

Overall grade scale: A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 75-79, D = 74-60, F = below 60

Rounding of Grades:   

The final course average will be rounded to the tenth place. For example, a course average of 79.50% would be rounded to 80%. Additional examples of final course averages rounded to the tenth place include:  

  • 74.62% will be rounded to a letter grade of C 
  • 74.38% will be rounded to a letter grade of D 
  • 79.77% will be rounded to a letter grade of B 
  • 79.499% will be rounded to a letter grade of C 
  • 89.87% will be rounded to a letter grade of A

Final GradeClinical Performance Evaluation of Competencies (CPEC) – 100%

Attendance

Students must complete 100% of all required clinical hours. This includes make-up days for any clinical absence (clinical orientation, hospital shifts, simulation experiences) and submission of all pre-simulation assignments.

Calendar

Course Placement:  Fall and Spring semesters, Nursing IV

Time Allotment: Sixteen (16) weeks.  The course allows for three (3) semester hours credit.  This includes 144 hours of clinical experience during the semester.The clinical experience includes orientation, eight in-hospital days, two pre-simulation assignments, and two simulation days (144 hours). Hospital days are twelve hour shifts on Thursday/Friday or Saturday/Sunday. Simulation days take place on West Campus in the Jones Hall, Nursing Resource Center.

It may be possible for students to apply precepted clinical hours (four 12-hour shifts or 50 hours) towards Nursing 4's required number of clinical hours. Students must contact the clinical instructor to request a precepted clinical experience. The instructor will work with the student to identify and arrange an acceptable experience. Additional required actions by the student for the application of precepted clinical hours towards the required number of clinical hours include:

  • Submission of completed Precepted Clinical Contract
  • Adherence to Precepted Clinical Guidelines

The Clinical Schedule will be available as soon as possible after the beginning of the semester
