Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Expected Student Behavior

EXPECTATIONS:  Every student will take personal responsibility for his/her learning in this course.
In order to be successful, each student must...
     Attend all lecture meetings
     Complete reading assignments before coming to class
     Participate in the lecture by asking questions
     Demonstrate college-level effort and behavior
     Complete all assignments by the due date

ADDITIONAL STUDENT GUIDELINES
1.  The student should read assignments prior to class and be prepared to discuss topics covered in class.  Students will be called on to share their understanding of these topics.

2.  Honesty and ethical behavior are imperative in any career.  All students are responsible for their own work.  AVOID ANY APPEARANCE OF CHEATING. Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated, a zero will be given for that assignment, quiz, or exam and will severely jeopardize the successful completion of this course.  The Amarillo College Student Code of Conduct will apply to all work in this course.  (see also AC RC Student Handbook)  Examples include, but are not limited to:
     Copying from another student's paper or homework
     Using materials during an exam that are not authorized by the exam administrator
     Collaborating with or seeking aid from another person during an exam without permission from the exam administrator
     Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of an exam or other assignments

3.  All conversations should be related to current class discussions.  Please refrain from private conversations or any other activities which may distract other learners.

4.  I want all students to be successful.  I believe cell phones distract from the learning environment.  Cell phones should be silenced during class and texting during lecture/class time is not permitted.  If you are expecting an important call, please see the instructor before class begins.  If you bring a laptop or other technological device to class, it should not be used for activities other than taking class notes or testing purposes.  The instructor reserves the right to take up any device during class with the understanding it will be returned when the class is dismissed.

5.  Assigned homework should be completed before class.  Homework cannot be completed in class unless class time is given by the instructor.  **This includes studying for another exam in my class.**  I expect students to be PRESENT both physically and mentally during my class time.
This course is very different from any other course you have taken. You will be tested over information gathering and decision-making on a wide range of disease processes among all patient ages. The homework you complete and the manner in which you study for these homework assignments will be a direct result of how you perform on your CSE final exam in this course.

6.  PLEASE check your AC email daily.

Grading Criteria

  1. The final course grade is based on the following:
    33% - Attendance and participation in classroom discussions.  Each class meeting is worth 10 points for a total of 150 points from the 15 class meetings. (Points assigned for participation in class discussions are based on the frequency and quality of the participation.)
    33% - Average grade on computer-based clinical simulations and SiMCentral simulations.  The value for each SIM exercise is 10 points for a total of 150 points.
    34% - Score on final exam consisting of 20 computer-based clinical simulations.  This is your practice Clinical Simulation Exam for your RRT.  The final exam is worth 155 points.
  2. The grading scale for this course is:
    A = 455-409.5 points
    B = 409-364 points
    C = 363-341 points
    F = less than 341 points
  3. There is no extra credit offered in this course.

Keep in mind that grades are not given.  Grades are EARNED based on student performance.  Often the instructor plays no role in the grading process other than recording.  Please be careful to note the requirements for earning the grade you desire and act accordingly throughout the semester.

SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY
Every member of the Amarillo College community is expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. All work submitted for credit is expected to be the student’s own work. Attendance

Attendance will be taken by Watermark. If you are not in your seat when class begins and attendance is taken, you will be tardy. It is your responsibility to ensure that the instructor counts you present for class if you came in late.

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. In the event of an unavoidable absence, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed lecture notes and arrange for make-up exams.

Calendar

One instructor driven clinical simulation or a simulation activity will be completed during each class period.  Students are expected to participate in both the information-gathering and decision-making components of each simulation.

Students are required to complete 10 clinical simulations either during the scheduled lab or outside of scheduled class times.  (You will use the tokens from Kettering to complete your work. It will be necessary for you to purchase tokens.)
