I maintain an "open-door" policy. If my office door is open, you are welcome in, without an appointment. This is an idea of when my "door is open": Normal hours will be Monday, 0900-1600, Tuesday and Thursday mornings 0900-1100, Wednesday from 1000-1600 (I have Paramedic Students in lab from 0800-1700, so I'm in and out of the office. Text me to be sure that I will be in the office for you.) and Friday mornings, by appointment.
Throughout the week, I have meetings, appointments off campus, etc. To avoid making a trip to the Academy for nothing, please feel free to text me to make sure I'm in the office before coming in to see me. I value your time and gasoline that it takes to get to the Academy and it will never be an inconvenience for you to text me.

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) For more information on Drop and Withdrawal Policies, please visit the Registrar's Office Web site.

Failure to Obtain Clinical/Field Internship Minimums as Required
As stated in various methods throughout this handbook, all course/class requirements (e.g.
didactic, psychomotor, affective, clinical, field internships, Exit-Final, Capstone, etc.) must be
successfully completed by the scheduled course/class end date(s). This is to address DSHS
and/or CAAHEP accreditation standards, and students are solely responsible to manage their
progression through these requirements as outlined in the Platinum tracking system utilized by
this program. Refer also to Overarching Student Responsibilities while in the EMSP Program.
Failure to continually manage your progression throughout the program will result in
individual class grades of “F” and likely suspension, or complete program failure as
described in the College catalog and this Handbook.
However, if within twenty-one days of the class completion date a student notifies their
instructor, Clinical Coordinator, and/or the Program Director of a deficiency (of no more than 24
total clinical/field hours), the student will be allowed to correct the deficit, contingent on the
following:
• The student initiated a midpoint check-in with their instructor to determine
o Adequate shifts were scheduled at that time
o All clinical documentation (to that date) were completed and submitted in a
timely fashion
o In the opinion of the instructor, mid-point progress appeared adequate
The instructor shall document this mid-point meeting in some fashion.
• Affiliated Clinical/Field sites grant shift approval within the 21-day period
o (Re)scheduled site rotation(s) will not necessarily be at the student’s convenience
– the earliest available dates will likely be scheduled on a first-come-first-served
basis until gone.
• The EMSP Clinical Coordinator/Director/Faculty are under no obligation to resolve
deficiencies if this procedure is NOT followed by the student, or if clinical/field facilities
do not respond to EMSP requests favorably…or in a timely manner. Remember, these
overall circumstances exist because the student did not properly manage their
responsibilities.

Clinical Conduct Policy:
All students will be required to adhere to the conduct and dress policies of each institution where clinical skills are acquired. Conduct and dress policy decisions will be addressed by clinical facility personnel and the Amarillo College EMSP Program Director and instructors.
Personal Hygiene Policy:
The student is expected to present a professional image at all times. To satisfactorily accomplish this, care must be given to personal hygiene. In an effort to promote cleanliness and professionalism, all students will adhere to the guidelines set forth in the AC EMSP EMT Student Handbook.
Regular attendance is necessary for successful completion of this course. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend all clinical shifts.
Students will establish their clinical/field internship schedules on Platinum Planner with the EMSP Clinical Coordinator well in advance of their first shift. Once the schedule is established, students must seek prior approval from the coordinator in order to reschedule a reserved shift. In the event conditions prevent prior approval, the coordinator must be notified the next business day following the absence, as well as the circumstances involved.
Calendar:
Special Note Regarding Scheduling Clinicals with Amarillo Medical Services (AMS): For AMS Clinicals, selecting a shift in Platinum Planner is REQUEST ONLY and does not assign that shift to the student automatically. AMS will customarily approve or deny a request within 96 hours of submission. Upon approval, students will receive a notification through Platinum Planner and the approved shift will belong to that student and it will be reflected on the student's Platinum Planner Calendar.
Failure to complete all clinical requirements will result in a grade of "F" for the course
Refer to the EMSP EMT Student Handbook (provided in class) for complete, detailed explanations. Immediately bring questions/concerns to your instructor.
Clinical or field shift reschedules exceeding two shifts per semester shall be considered excessive and trigger the attendance policy procedures for subsequent absence numbers three, four, and/or five (as similarly outlined earlier in this document). Failure to correct absenteeism and/or rescheduling issues may result in an “F” for the course, and/or dismissal from the program.
Students must attend and complete ALL the internship number of shifts and locations by semester's end. Although other factors may influence internship final grades, failure to attend and complete all the required number and locations of shifts absolutely results in the following letter grades in both internship, semester courses:
Failure to complete all required shifts and/or Platinium requirements - F
0 rescheduled shifts - A
1 rescheduled shift - B
2 rescheduled shifts - C
4 or more rescheduled shifts - F
Other factors (such as, but not limited to: affective performance, clinical competence, complaints from internship sites, etc.), impact course grades. For example, missing 2 shifts and poor affective performance would likely result in an “F” for both courses. Refer to the EMSP EMT Student Handbook and/or the Program Director for a complete explanation of requirements to pass.
Rescheduled shifts (if allowed) will be on the next available shift and likely NOT at a time/date convenient to the student. Therefore, give careful consideration prior to missing a shift.
Tardy
On time is defined as arrival for a scheduled shift at least fifteen minutes prior to its beginning. Tardiness shall be assessed at five minutes prior to the shifts beginning, and will count as an absence. However, students may continue attending a tardy shift at the discretion of site officials.
NOTE REGARDING EMS SHIFTS: Students should never expect an EMS Unit to be "held from deployment" to wait for a student. If you are late in arriving for a shift, and your assigned unit has left the station, that unit will not return for you and a supervisor will not transport you to rendezvous with that unit, you will be sent home from your scheduled shift and counted absent, with that absence being addressed per the provisions of this syllabus and the AC EMSP EMT Handbook.
The clinical grade will be determined by completeness of the clinical packet requirements and by attendance, skill proficiency, and student attitude in interacting with other healthcare professionals, peers, patients and family members of patients. The clinical (EMSP 1163) grade will not exceed the classroom (EMSP 1501) grade.
Clinical attendance/absence/tardies shall be addressed according to this syllabus, the EMSP 1501 Syllabus and the AC EMSP Student Handbook. Failure of the student to meet these attendance requirements will likely result in the student being advised to withdraw from both EMSP 1163 and EMSP 1501 (because the classes are co-requisites for the EMT Course), or receive an "F" for the final course grade. Exceptions to the policy will be at the discretion of the course instructor and the EMSP Program Director.
Students will choose their clinical schedule using the Clinical Scheduling Software discussed in class.
Clock Hours: 48 Clock Hours (four 12-hour clinical shifts--two ER and two EMS (provided that students complete the "runs" necessary to meet the minimum number of required PCRs. If the minimums are not available after the required clock hours, students shall notify the instructor and potential additions will be handled according to the AC EMSP EMT Student Handbook, Lab & Internship Manual.
