Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

In-depth coverage of foundational health care concepts with application through selected exemplars. Concepts include comfort, diversity, elimination, functional ability, human development, mobility, nutrition, sensory perception, sleep, thermoregulation, grief, and tissue integrity. Emphasizes development of clinical judgment skills in the beginning nurse. This course lends itself to a concept-based approach.

This is a hybrid course that uses a flipped classroom approach. Students should prepare for class by watching the weekly VIDGRID Lectures and reading the assigned Pearson chapters before attending in-class lecture on Monday and Tuesday.

 

Student Performance

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will:  

  1. Utilize a systematic process to analyze selected foundational concepts for patients across the lifespan.  
  2. Describe nursing management for selected foundational concepts.
  3. Apply the learned concepts to other concepts or exemplars.
  4. Describe the interrelatedness between foundational concepts to assist in developing clinical judgment.

The course grade will consist of 3 Unit Exams, the ATI CBC Specialty Exam, Assignments, Quizzes and a Comprehensive Final exam.

No late assignments will be accepted for this course

All tutoring and remediation requirements must be completed in order to take the next Unit Exam or sit for the Comprehensive Final Exam.

ASSESSMENT TECHNOLOGIES INSTITUTE (ATI) 

ATI assessments will be done throughout the semester. These assessments are utilized to establish readiness for National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX).  All students will be required to complete the focused review based on the results of these assessments.

The Focused Review must be completed by the due date listed on the respective course calendar(s) in which the student is enrolled. If the focused review is not completed, then the student will not be allowed to sit for the Final Exam and will receive a grade of zero (0) for the Final Exam. Expected Student Behavior

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate or disruptive behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

 All cell phones, pagers, noisy devices are to be turned off or put on vibrate. No text messaging in class. Only emergency communications should be answered and students need to quietly leave the lecture hall if necessary. Students are expected to maintain high academic standards and not engage in any form of cheating as outlined in ADN testing policy found at: http://www.actx.edu/nursing/index.php?module=article&id=226

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 75-79

D = 60-74

F = below 60

Final Course Grades are rounded:  For example: If your average is 74.98, then with rounding, your average is a C. If your average is 89.98, with rounding, your average is an A.  

You must achieve a final grade of 74.5% to pass this course.

Attendance

  1. Regular attendance is required for satisfactory achievement in this class.

  2. Less than 90% attendance of classroom hours may result in failure of the course.

  3. Attendance will be taken for each class through AVISO/Watermark

  4. Individuals not present during roll call or those that LEAVE EARLY will be recorded as absent.

  5. Individuals late to class will be recorded as tardy. 

  6. All assignments must be completed on time.  No late work will be accepted after posted due dates.

  7. Any anticipated class/lab absence must be reported to the instructor.
