Expected Student Behavior

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

There is much information to be covered during the semester; therefore, the student should be prepared to attend class regularly (verified via zoom attendance) and keep up with the assignments.  If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course, zeros for assignments will continue to be given for non-submission, and you will receive an “F” for the course. A grade of “W” will be given for student-initiated drops or withdrawals on or before the withdrawal deadline. Date for which is available from campus calendar. Please make sure to fill out the required paperwork to formally withdraw from class.

There will be NO MAKE UPS on assignments, quizzes, or exams past the posted deadline, so please do not ask.

CHEATING: Do not give any indication of cheating. This involves performing "questionable" activities during tests/exams, use of lecture/personal notes, cell phones, texting, crib sheets, books, etc. Suspected cheating on any assessment will result in a zero for the grade and possible expulsion (removal) from the class.

SAFETY:  The student will be expected to follow the safety rules and to notify the instructor immediately if any accident occurs.  While the risk is minimized as much as possible, there is the potential for contact with electrical appliances, heating elements, sharp instruments, chemicals, and organic materials, some of which may be biohazardous.  Any student deemed to be jeopardizing the safety of others will be asked to leave (applies to only In Person Labs).

FOOD/DRINK:

Food and Drink consumption are restricted due to Covid safety concerns while in lecture and lab.

*While lectures/labs will be given remotely, it is still a matter of "netiquette" not to eat during lecture.

CELL PHONES/PAGERS: *Notify instructor if need arises to have it "on" and visible (childcare, on-call status...).

Show common courtesy for your fellow students and your instructor and either turn off phones, or place on “silent” mode during class.  If you have a pressing need, please excuse yourself quietly and take care of it. No cells phones out in sight or on at all.  Be aware of the following consequence (click on the link below) if your phone rings and violates the cell phone policy when in class, even Zoom.  Classroom Cell Phone Policy that Builds Community

Grading Criteria

GRADING:  All chapter quizzes will be accessed through AC Online (BlackBoard, BB) and you will have the opportunity for repeated attempts on each quiz up to its deadline.  Most questions will consist of short answer and identification, along with some multiple choice questions.  A maximum of 25 questions delivered within a 25 minute maximum time limit.  These online chapter quizzes may be repeated with 1 additional attempt(s) depending upon the material covered.  The highest grade will be recorded and included in your cumulative grade.

Weighting of Grade Average:

75% lecture (15% on chapter quizzes,  40% on maximum of 7 unit tests, & 20% Cumulative Final Exam)

25% lab (7.5% on lab quizzes, 7.5% on lab assignments & problem-based studies, & 10% on lab practical; maximum of 2)

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact Disability Services (SSC 119, ph 371-5436) within the first two weeks of class.

COURSE CONTENT:

This "Tech Supported" course will require that you are self-motivated and have a designated structure to your study habits.

It is expected that you will attend the remote online lecture session live, as if it were in person class time (see schedule in BB).

Where to Begin:

Review the calendar at the beginning of the course, and try to outline a schedule for yourself, that fits into your schedule.  I have included some flexibility in the course structure to accommodate schedules, but there are deadlines for most assignments.  It is more critical than ever that YOU take on the responsibility of staying on top of assignments and schedules.

Science courses in general require at least 3 hours of study for every hour spent “in class”. Some students require more, some less, but the point here is that you need to be prepared to spend time on the material in this course! You cannot cram and be successful for this quantity of information. Especially in an eight week course.

Suggestion for each unit is the following:

At the beginning of each week/chapter, check out the content unit as posted in Blackboard.  Guidelines will include the following:

  • Read the chapter content from the textbook; as you read, look up words you don't know the meaning of and write down their definitions

  • Look for content videos on topics which need further comprehension.

  • Complete any correlating labs in the lab manual. Submit those assignments by due dates.

  • In the textbook, answer questions on the study guide/review at end of chapter to prepare for the quiz/test.

  • Review for the quiz & test.

  • Go back and review those content areas where you performed poorly on quizzes and unit tests. It is more beneficial to know the, "why of an incorrect response" than it is just to acknowledge it's incorrect. Learn from mistakes! You will see a lot of this material again.

  • Be well prepared for the Unit Tests, as these account for over 40% of total grade.

Other considerations to increase your success in the course:

  • Know particular diagrams that are included in the readings and PPT’s, which are explicitly identified.

  • Make sure you can label them correctly and understand the diagram fully.

  • Visit as many of the suggested links for interactive online study aids as you can, such as Gale Interactive.

  • Form a “study group” with one or two fellow students.  You can use online chats, face-to-face meetings, internal emails or the discussion threads to communicate with members of the study group. Utilize the Underground basement of Ware.

  • Try to schedule time at the computer away from distractions, pets, children, etc. to get the most out of your time spent online.  Many do quite well setting an early alarm (5:30 am or so) to get in some study time each morning.

  • Students should log into their BB course at least twice daily and must complete course activities weekly as designated by the course syllabus and due dates. (Log in around 8am and 8pm, for example.)

  • You can expect to spend several additional hours per week on course content OUTSIDE of scheduled class times.

  • Please note that this is NOT a self-paced or completely online course. The remote live lectures/labs will be paced to support activities and all assignments/assessments with designated due dates.

You are expected to complete quizzes and tests without the use of notes, textbook or other materials, just as if you were in the classroom.  Cheating may give you a better grade, but it does not serve you in the end…….after all, learning the material is in your best interest and is the point of this course!  Nobody wants to be medically treated by someone who cheated and may not fully know the finer details.

For detailed information as to what constitutes cheating and plagiarism, see Student Rights and Responsibilities.

LECTURE GRADES:  75% of overall course grade

Chapter Quizzes:

Does not use BB Respondus, timed, repeatable once until deadline, maximum of 25 questions (FIB, MC, SA format) highest score recorded in grade book. Up to 25 points/quiz.  All quizzes comprise 7-10% of course grade. (Lowest quiz score will be dropped).

Unit Tests: *No comprehensive Unit Test review material is available at this time (ie study guides).

Proctored through BB Respondus, timed, accessed via AC Online (Blackboard). Maximum of 60 questions, primarily MC format and 100 points/test.  5-7 unit tests comprise 40-45% of course grade. (Lowest test score will be dropped).

*If you make less than a 70 on any unit test, you will be required to obtain 60 minutes of tutoring from the SASC (Science Academic Success Center). Tutoring can be obtained Remote/In Person and needs to be scheduled in advance (spots fill up fast, so book early). The SASC website has online scheduling/reservations for booking. You may also schedule a study session with instructor prior to taking the next test.  You will not be allowed to take the next test until after verification that you have received tutoring.

Final Exam: *A comprehensive exam review will be made available just prior to finals week.

Proctored, timed, & approximately 100-150 MC questions. Delivery via AC Online (Blackboard).  Comprises up to 25% of course grade. The final exam will be available during final exam week as posted in the Amarillo College Master Calendar.

A comprehensive Lab Practical review will be made available just prior to exam (Lab practical exams will not be dropped).

Labs will be conducted remotely via Zoom and Recorded. (see schedule in BB).

Standard Grading will be utilized:

A = 89.5 – 100

B = 79.5 – 89

C = 69.5 – 79

D = 59.5 – 69

F = Below 59.5

*Grades are not curved.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement, as such, regular attendance checks will be made.

It is the student’s responsibility to attend class (Remote and In Person) and to make it a priority.

There is much information to be covered during the semester; therefore, the student should be prepared to attend class regularly and keep up with the assignments.  If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course, you will receive an “F” for the course.

A grade of “W” will be given for student-initiated drops or withdrawals on or before the withdrawal date.

There will be NO MAKE UPS on assignments, quizzes, or tests past the posted deadline. Please do not ask (this is why the lowest grade is dropped). This includes extended sicknesses, quarantines, and COVID19 positive tests.

It is a requirement to have the Amarillo College Healthhub app and submit responses daily. if you obtain a "Don't come to campus response" you must screenshot and email to me, jjenkins@actx.edu and campus covid tracking team, campushealth@actx.edu. Yes, even though this is 100% tech supported.

Science Testing Center & Science Academic Success Center: WARREN HALL 112

All tests, will be taken in the Science Testing Center or in the Ware Underground during normal hours of operation or via Respondus Lockdown Browser using student's own computer or campus computer.  Tests will be taken outside of class times.  Please note:  If taking in the STC, no test may be started less than one and a half hours before the proctored Testing Center closes. You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test. The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and will return it to you when you turn in your test.

 MANDATORY TUTORING: WARREN HALL 110

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any test (excluding the Final Exam) must complete a mandatory tutoring session with the SASC tutor or with his/her instructor before taking the next test. Before getting mandatory tutoring, students must first schedule a tutoring time with the SEC by either calling (806 345-5536) or visiting (Warren Hall 110).

The Center will do its best to accommodate a student’s schedule within the hours of operation. This may require plenty of advanced notice by the student as time slots fill quickly.  Upon arrival in the Center, students must inform staff that they are required to take mandatory tutoring. Mandatory tutoring will not require remediation over a failed test. The first instance of mandatory tutoring will be for 30 minutes. Subsequent instances of mandatory tutoring will be for 60 minutes.
