Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

An overview of automotive electrical systems including topics in operational theory, testing, diagnosis, and repair of charging and starting systems, and electrical accessories.  Emphasis on electrical principles, schematic diagrams, and service publications.  May be taught manufacturer specific.

Student Performance

WECM End-of-Course- Outcomes: Utilize safety procedures; define basic electrical principles; interpret wiring schematics and symbols; explain operation of batteries, starting/charging systems, and automotive circuits; use test equipment; and perform basic electrical repairs.

General: Electrical System Diagnosis

  • Research applicable vehicle and service information including vehicle service history, service precautions, and technical service bulletins.  (P-1)

  • Demonstrate knowledge of electrical/electronic series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits using principles of electricity (Ohm's Law)   (P-1)

  • Demonstrate proper use of a digital multimeter (DMM) when measuring source voltage, voltage drop (including grounds), current flow and resistance.  (P-1)

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required to comply with the Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct. The Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct will be posted on the bulletin board in the Transportation Career Center and the Academic Classroom Center and will be explained in detail by the Instructor on the first day of class.

Grading Criteria

Attendance

You are expected to attend all class meetings on time and stay for the whole class. Points will be deducted from your attendance and participation for not complying.

Three tardies ( more than ten minutes after the start of class or leaving before class is concluded) equal an absence.

Ten points will be deducted from your final grade for each absence.

Some information presented may be manufacturer specific. 

You MUST get your Instructor's permission to bring a vehicle into the shop. If you do not, you WILL be asked to leave the shop.

Vehicles are not to remain "overnight". Any work performed MUST be completed by the end of class. Verify you have ALL parts and supplies needed to complete any maintenance or repair. If unsure, ask your instructor prior to work being started.  

All vehicles brought into the shop MUST have a repair order filled out and placed on the windshield. 

Honk your horn prior to entering and leaving the shop. 

Have a window down and keys outside of the vehicle to prevent being locked out.
