Phones/Pagers: It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that cell phones and pagers must be turned off or in silent mode in the classrooms and the computer labs.

Guests/Children:  It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that only students enrolled in this course attend this course.

Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism:  Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Students that cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on your permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, copying or leaving the Math Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test regardless of the testing venue.

Grading Criteria

Class Notes:  Students are required to take lecture notes everyday and regularly. Students may use loose leaf papers or notebooks to take the daily lecture notes, or may work on the printed copies of Class-Notes posted on Blackboard's 'Course Content'. Upon completion of each unit (these are daily class work problems), students will be required to submit them into Blackboard's Drop-Box for grading.  Due dates will be set in Blackboard's Drop-Box and no late work is possible to submit there.  Instructions on how to turn in assignments will be given in class.  Notes must be uploaded as a single PDF file, more than one PDF is not obtainable for checking in Blackboard's Drop-Box.

Online Homework:  All homework will be completed online using the MyMathLab website.  Help buttons will be available for each problem in MyMathLab, and you may rework problems multiple times until you get the correct answer.  Due dates will be posted on the class schedule in Blackboard and also on the MyMathLab website.  Though this homework will be submitted online, I strongly recommend that you keep an organized log of written work to accompany each homework assignment to better learn the process of solving problems.

Online Exam Reviews:  Reviews will be assigned on MyMathLab before each major exam.  Each review functions as a practice exam.  Expect your grade on the exam to be similar to your grade on the review.  Keep in mind that you may work the review problems multiple times to keep improving your grade and to better prepare for the exam.

Five Major Exams [No Final Exam]:  Five unit exams will be assigned on MyMathLab at the end of each unit. Students are required not only to input the final answer on MyMathLab exams, but also to copy the problems on Test Forms, work with required steps over there, and then to submit the scanned pdf into the Blackboard's Drop-Box within 1 day immediate after the exam deadline. Without submission of the Test Forms with detail works within the deadline, related Exam-score will be graded as '0' on Blackboard, no matter what you score on MyMathLab Test.

If you score below a 70 on any unit exam, you will be required to spend minimum 1 hour at Math Outreach Center to get helped for next exam.  This is the general policy of the Department of Mathematics of Amarillo College.  Exams are to be taken individually, no "team testing."  See the section on "cheating and plagiarism" for consequences of cheating (team testing).

Low Exam Retake:  At the end of the semester, if your average is less than 70 or you did not complete a unit exam, you will be required to retake your lowest unit exam on MyMathLab.  If your average is higher than 70 but you wish to improve your grade, you will also be given the opportunity to retake your lowest exam on MyMathLab.  However, if your average is 70 or above AND you are concerned with your grade, you will not be required to retake any unit exam.

Extra Credit/Late Work: Extra credit will not be given and late work will not be accepted.

Math 1314 and Math 0314 are linked together and known as a co-requisite pairing.  Successful completion of both courses is essential.  One course cannot be dropped without dropping both which might have serious financial aid consequences.  There are no extra credit opportunities in this course.  To earn credit, you must pass with a “C” or better average in both courses.  Each of the two classes will have course specific requirements; however, because Math 0314 and Math 1314 are fully integrated major test grades from Math 1314, including the conditional final, will count in both course gradebooks.

Grading Policy:  Your grade (90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 60-69% D, less than 60 F) will be determined using the following weights:

Attendance:  Attendance will be taken every day at varying times during class.  To get counted as present, you must attend class the entire time we are meeting.  You are allowed to miss one day without penalty.  For every absence after the first, 5 points will be deducted for your attendance grade.

The deadline to drop this course is Tuesday, May 4, 2021.  To complete the drop process, you must submit your drop form to me for my signature by 5pm on Monday, May 3, 2021.  If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.
