Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Supplies

BLANK white printer paper, pencils, erasers, straight edge, five dividers and one three ring binder (1.5"- 2" recommended).

Calculator: Students will need a graphing calculator for this course.  The recommended calculator is a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus.  Other forms of Texas Instruments or Casio graphing calculators will be permitted at the instructor’s discretion.  Note that no TI-89s or TI-Nspires will be permitted. There are FREE APPS available on your smart phone device that will resemble the ti-84 calculator. Please note, although you can use these in the classroom, you cannot use them on a monitored exam. You can also check with the Math Academic Success Center for calculators available for rental.

Internet Access: Students need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection to complete online homework assignments, and access to a printer to produce class notes and other handouts.

Printer: Printers are available located in THE UNDERGROUND lab located in Ware Building. Hours of operation are located on their AC Webpage and at the bottom of your syllabus.

College ID: Students need an official Amarillo College student ID to scan into the Underground and Outreach Center and to present in the Math Testing Lab before each exam. If you do not have an ID, please know your student ID number.

Seesaw APP:Students will be asked to download and use the FREE communication app called SEESAW. This app allows for more effective communication between you and your instructor throughout the week.

an access code for MyMathLab. If you took the Math 1350 course online last semester, you may register in this course's MyMathLab component using the same access code and account as last semester at no additional cost. To do this, get into AC Connect and click into our Blackboard course for this semester.  Click the MyMathLab link on the main menu inside our Blackboard course.  Click "Launch" and "continue" if a security message appears.  Enter your username and password from your previous online course which used the same textbook.  This should give you access to MyMathLab again this semester at no additional cost as long as it has not been over a year since you took the previous course and we are using the same textbook for this course as you used in your previous course.

You must be able to get into MyMathLab to take this class. If you do not have an access code or an account from last semester, you need to purchase one online at www.mymathlab.com or contact your instructor immediately for assistance.

Student Performance

After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics:

  1. Apply fundamental terms of geometry such as points, lines, and planes to describe two and three dimensional figures.
  2. Make and test conjectures about figures and geometric relationships.
  3. Use a variety of methods to identify and justify congruency and similarity of geometric objects. 
  4. Perform geometric transformations.
  5. Demonstrate fundamental probability techniques and apply those techniques to solve problems.
  6. Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  7. Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
  8. Perform measurement processes and explain the concept of a unit of measurement.
  9. Develop and use formulas for the perimeter, area, and volume for a variety of figures.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to behave in a manner that is supportive of a positive learning environment.  This includes academic honesty.  Cheating is not allowed in any form.  Students are expected to perform their own work and exams at all times. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated on any test or assignment for this course.  Plagiarism of any type will be considered academic dishonesty.  A grade of zero on the exam or assignment will be earned for any person found cheating or plagiarizing and the extent of the cheating may result in the student being dropped from the course.  This zero will not be used as a dropped grade.  In addition, students found cheating or plagiarizing may be subject to further disciplinary action as outlined in the Amarillo College Student's Rights and Responsibilities document.  

Students may NOT use a cell phone of any kind at any time while taking any test/exam in this course.  This includes the online tests and the proctored written exams.  The penalty for using a cell phone during a test/exam may be an immediate "F" in the course and possibly even being dropped from the course.  Please plan to leave your cell phone in a different location while you are taking your tests/exams for this course.

Students are expected to behave in a manner that is respectful toward AC faculty, staff, students, and/or property.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or with AC's "student Rights & Responsibilities" will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to: removal from the course, consultation with the department chair or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

The notebook will be checked for the awarded extra credit points on Monday May 10th. This is an ALL or NONE credit!

Attendance & Notes

 You must be present in class to receive the attendance grade of 100. This class meets 14-16 times. You will receive two free excused absences and then points will be deducted from your attendance grade each time you miss from there on out.

Notes are required at part of your attendance as well. You must watch the lecture videos and record your notes for that section. Notes will be turned in at the end of the course through a video documentation because they have many flips and folds. Notes must be submitted and directions on how to submit will be thoroughly explained and provided. If Notes are not submitted properly by the assigned due date, you will receive a zero. No exceptions.

Portfolios:  
Details can be found at our course page on ACConnect. An electronic portfolio will be developed during the semester. This portfolio will consist of a collectable of foldables, visual demonstrations or even self developed notes of each chapters contents and how they relate to the TEKS. You will have class announcements and videos posted to help explain this portfolio that you are to develop. You will be submitting your portfolio electronically through Blackboard and uploading a PDF. I will grade your portfolios electronically and post your results in our course grade book.  Detailed instructions for the creation of your portfolio are found in the AC Connect course information documents found under the "Portfolio" tab of the Blackboard course main menu.  Please be sure to read these documents within the first three days of the course and complete them as you work through the course for this project as it is a large part (15%) of your overall grade in this course.

MML Homework:

1.  Expect to have homework each day. Late homework will not be accepted.  Late is defined to be anything turned in after the due date. You are given several days to complete assignment. For no reason will you be allowed to submit late homework assignments.

2.  All online homework must be worked in according to written homework standards. Anything that is wrong or needs to be corrected must be clearly erased or whited out.  Don't write, doodle, or perform mathematical calculations in the margins.  Homework must be neat and legible.

3.  Do not tear your paper out of a spiral and leave jagged edges.

4.  If you have more than one page for a single assignment, you must label the following pages.

5.  Homework must be presented in an orderly manner with the problem running a single column down the left half of the page. You may use the right half of the page for graphs, tables and drawings.  Any problem (excluding graphs) with work presented in anything except the first column will not receive credit.  Each line must contain only one equal sign, "=."   All final answers must be boxed or circled to receive credit.

6.  You will place your name in the top right corner of each page. On the top line of each page list the appropriate section of the MML assignment (for example Section 1.1). Notice the "Section" is not abbreviated. Each assignment will need to have the heading in the top right corner as demonstrated below:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact another student to find out the homework assignment for the following class.  
Remember, LATE HOMEWORK IS NOT ACCEPTED. Calendars and due dates are set at the very first day of the course so you will know what assignments are due at all times.

  1. Login to your Blackboard course.
  2. Click on MyMathLab Links in the menu on the left side of the screen.
  3. Click on MyMathLab with Pearson Assignments and accept the Licensing Agreement.
  4.  If you have a Pearson account, enter your username and password.  If you have never used a Pearson MyLab and Mastering product, click on Create to enter information to create your account.
  1. Make sure you enter an email address that you check often.
  2. Please, use YOUR name as you are registered for school.
  1. If you have used MyMathLab with this textbook and this Pearson account previously, you should see a page indicating that you are done.
  2. If you have not used MyMathLab with this textbook before, you have three options.
  1. To use an access code that came packaged with your textbook or bought as a stand alone folder, click on Access Code.
  2. To use a credit card or PayPal account to buy the access code, click on the box with the current publisher's price.
  3. To get temporary access while you wait for financial aid, payday, etc., click on Get temporary access without payment for 14 days at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Each homework problem will usually have some of the following buttons to the right of the problem:  Help me solve This, View an Example, Video, Animation, Textbook, Connect to a Tutor, Print, Study Plan, Tools for Success, Multimedia Library and HTML eBook. 
  1. The Grade book will show you the assignment you have worked, the scores, and give you the chance to review any assignment.                                                                                  

Other Information:

  1. In general, you get 3 attempts on each problem.  The following equal 1 attempt.
  1. Entering an incorrect answer on a short answer or numeric problem 3 times.
  2. Entering an incorrect answer on a multiple choice problem 1-2 times depending on the number of answer choices.
  3. Using the Help Me Solve This button. (View an Example does not use an attempt.)
  1. After each attempt, you will be presented with the correct answer and the Submit Answer button will become Similar Exercise (until 3 attempts have been used).  To get another attempt on your problem, click on Similar Exercise and a similar problem (same problem, different numbers) will appear.
  2. You can print your assignments, work on them away from the computer, and then return to enter the answers.  On each problem, there is a button that will open a popup and ask if you want to print that page or the entire assignment.
  3. You do not have to "save" any work.  Once you click on Submit answer and see either a green check mark or a red box with hints, the answers are saved.
  4. If you open a homework assignment and see a green check next to a problem, you have received full credit for that problem.  A red X means you have attempted the problem, but have not received any credit.  If you have both a green check and a red X, you have received partial credit.
  1. Be VERY careful when entering an answer.  There are instructions written in blue below most problems, if you do not enter the answer in the specified format or with the requested rounding, the answer will be considered incorrect.  Recall that entering an incorrect answer three times is one attempt.

 

Reviews:
Exam reviews can be found right after a chapters assignments and right before an exam. There is no limit on how many times you can re-take the review. You must pass your review with a 70% or higher to be given access to the exam. Reviews were specifically designed to inform you of whether you are prepared for the exam following. Once again, you must make a 70% or higher on  your review to be given access t o your chapter exam. 

Major Exams:  

Five major exams will be given and will be completed throughout the course. Exams will be completed outside of class. Dates will be determine throughout the course depending on time availability.

No late exams will be given, no matter the reason. This is because you are given all the due dates well in advance and one of your lowest exams will be dropped. At the end of the semester, your lowest of these five exams will be dropped from your average.

If you know in advance that you will be gone during the assigned exam dates, you can TAKE YOUR EXAM EARLY!

If you make below 70 on a major exam, a minimum of 1 (one) hour must be spent in the Math Academic Success Center correcting your exam. Once corrections are made, you will need to schedule a time to meet with the instructor to discuss said corrections prior to your next exam.

Final Exam:
At the end of the semester, you will have a comprehensive final exam due by  Wednesday May 12 th by  8:00 pm.

Makeup Policy: It is the policy of the Math Department that make-up exams will NOT be given. Only in extreme, verifiable, and documented cases will any exception to this rule be considered. If any tests are not completed by the deadline stated, a grade of zero will be awarded.

Attendance:  Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement and IS PART OF YOUR GRADE. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class and be on time for daily attendance check.  Nonattendance will be recorded as an absence and no differentiation will be made as to excused or unexcused absences.  Students who miss the daily roll call or leave early without permission will be marked absent for the day. If you are absent for any reason, YOU are responsible for obtaining the assignments and notes from a peer.  If for some reason you stop working on this course and decide that you do not have time because of other commitments, please remember to officially withdraw “W” from this course.  To officially withdraw "W", you must visit with your professor personally and obtain a signed "Withdrawal Approval Form".  This signed form must be taken to the Ask AC desk in the Student Services Building by  Tuesday May 4th. This is the last date that you can withdraw “W” from this course this semester.

DROP POLICY - Students who do not attend class, log in and complete the first TWO out of three assignments with 70% accuracy by the census date for this course which is Monday, March 29th, will be administratively dropped from the course.  

Additional lectures, powerpoints and variouse digital instructions can be found through your MML course under "Multimedia Tools".  Mastery of the material will be facilitated by reading the text and Power Point lessons, viewing MyMathLab videos, working through examples and solving homework problems from the text and online.

The course itself uses MyMathLab for delivery of the majority of the online instruction and content of the course.  It is important that the first time you access MyMathLab in this course, that you do it through your AC Connect /Blackboard Contemporary Math Course.   If AC Connect goes down, however, you may still do your homework by using Mozilla Firefox and typing www.mymathlab.com into the browser's address bar.  You will then be able to get into MyMathLab and continue your course work and homework assignments as usual.

MATH LAB RULES

  • Books may be placed on the bookshelf or in a hall locker before you request a test. Padlocks may be checked out in the Math Lab.
  • An Amarillo College picture ID is required in order to take a test in the Math Lab.
  • Once you have begun work on a test that is considered one attempt. You cannot leave the Math Lab and return to finish that test at a later time.
  • In the testing room, please do not sit by someone with the same colored test. All purses must be on the floor.
  • The Math Lab will not hand out a test less than one hour before closing time.
  • The Math Lab personnel will pick up your test five minutes prior to closing time.
  • The Math Lab hours are posted on the outside door, in this syllabus, and in the lab itself.
  • Please come prepared. If you do not have a pencil, you may purchase one from the Math Lab for 25 cents.  Please bring exact change. Pens are not allowed on any test.
  • Childcare arrangements must be made prior to testing. Children may not accompany students into testing room or be left unattended anywhere on campus.
  • CELL PHONE CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
  • Cell phones must be turned off as not to disturb other students who are testing. NO CELL PHONE use of any kind is allowed in the Testing Room. If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an "F" for the course!
