Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) COURSE MATERIALS: Textbook, dictionary, pens, pencils, notebook paper or notebook for note taking, access to a computer to complete assignments and review class material, access to a computer to complete content requirements. Access to film rentals and library materials are necessary for successful completion of this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is a general study of diverse world cultures.  Topics include cultural practices, social structures, religions, arts, and languages.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1.  Demonstrate knowledge of common terms and concepts associated with the study of world cultures.
  2. Articulate an informed personal response and critically analyze works in the arts and humanities from various world cultures.
  3. Demonstrate awareness of multiple cultural perspectives by comparing and contrasting the cultural expressions of diverse world communities.
  4. Analyze various cultures to navigate diverse cultural spaces and recognize different world views.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of geography and the location of different cultural groups in the world.

Expected Student Behavior

Academic HonestyAll matters of academic dishonesty including plagiarism (the act of copying and pasting information from one source and inserting into a paper without proper citation, rewriting information from another source and inserting into a paper without proper citation, copying and rewriting from another student’s work and using as your own), collusion, fabrication, cheating etc. will result in a failing grade for the assignment in question.

• All violations will be forwarded to the proper college authorities for review. Any form of disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

Any material that is copied and pasted from a web source into assignments, analyses, and essays without proper citations or documentation will be considered plagiarism or stealing and will receive a failing grade.

Classroom Rules and ExpectationsAll students are required to practice courteous, respectful, cooperative behavior at all times. To avoid distractions in the classroom, students will arrive on time and stay until class is dismissed.  Be prepared to stay on task. 

Cell Phone/ Personal Computer Policy:  In order to not interrupt the class session, students are asked to turn off all cell phones and pagers prior to the beginning of class.  Inform the instructor before class if you are on emergency call or of any special circumstance that may require your communication. Personal computers are to be used strictly for notes and accessing course material. Improper use of cell phones and personal computers during class time including checking personal e-mail, personal web pages, texting and other course work not pertaining to the World Cultures class will not be tolerated and students will be asked to leave the class. 
 

Accessing AC Connect and Blackboard: It is the responsibility of the student to check email messages, announcements and the course information using AC Connect. Student will submit all assignments and analyses using AC Connect and Blackboard unless noted on the assignment or by the instructor. For any technical difficulties using Blackboard, please call 806-371-5992.

Email and Online Etiquette and Behavior: All students are expected to be polite, considerate and professional when posting opinions and thoughts in an email or in the Discussion Forum. Students posting or emailing aggressive, insulting, or inappropriate use of language or opinions will not be tolerated and will be considered a violation of Student Behavior as state in the AC Student Handbook. Violations will result in a failing grade for the course and will be forwarded to the proper college authorities for review.

Grading Criteria

Discussion Category: Discussion (combination or mix of online and in-class) will be 50% of the overall Final Grade. There will be a total of six (6) discussions and the lowest Discussion grade will be dropped. Thus, the top 5 Discussion grades will represent 50% of the overall Final Grade.

Assignment Category: Short Essay, Quizzes, Final Paper and Final Power Point Presentation will represent 50% of the overall Final Grade. Please see below for specific distribution percentages in this Assignment Category. 

Online Quizzes Weigh 8.667% Each x 3 = 26% 

Film Paper Weights 12% 

Final Power Point Presentation Weighs 12% (students will create a 6 slide power-point presentation for class on selected country)

Attendance

ATTENDANCE AND CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE POLICY FOR LECTURE SECTIONS:
It is the student’s responsibility to access the course online and complete all Assignments, Analyses, Discussion Forums, Quizzes, and Essays according to the course calendar. Students are expected to access the online course every day to complete all requirements according to the set due dates.

ETIQUETTE: Students are expected to conduct themselves and exchange ideas, opinions and information in a respectful manner. Please refrain from using any swear or cuss words in the classroom. Good etiquette also includes respectful practices like not sleeping and not talking excessively to one's neighbor or friend when class activities are going on. If warnings are disregarded, the instructor reserves the right to count the student as tardy or absent AND/OR penalize the current assignment for which the behavior is continuing to occur.     

Census Date and Final Date to Withdraw: You must physically attend class by the Census date on Monday, June 14th (6/14/2021) to avoid an automatic withdrawal from the course.
Final Date to Withdraw from the Course without a Failing Grade: Tuesday, July 20th (7/20/2021).

Accessing AC Connect:  It is the student’s responsibility to check e-mail messages, announcements and the course using AC Connect. Students will submit all assignments and analyses using AC Online unless noted on the assignment or by the instructor. Emails to the instructor must be through AC Connect and Blackboard. For any technical difficulties using Blackboard, please call 806-371-5992.

Department Tutoring Policy: If a student scores below 70% on an exam or writing assignment, he or she will be required to attend tutoring per the instructor’s directions before being allowed to complete the next assigned work.
