Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

This laboratory-based course accompanies GEOL 1303, Physical Geology. Laboratory activities will cover methods used to collect and analyze earth science data.

Student Performance

 

Student Outcomes: By the end of the semester the student should be able to complete the listed objectives with a minimum of 60% competency level based on the grading procedure for the course.

1.         Be able to explain the geologic processes which are included in the course material (note, not all geologic processes are                included in the course).

2.         Be able to explain how the science of geology is related to math, electronics, and computer science and the sciences of physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and oceanography.

3.         Be able to explain the function of geologists in our society.

In addition to the above stated objectives, this course has as its goal to:

4.         Provide students who are going to major in geology or an earth science based subject, the fundamental facts and principles of physical geology they will need to start their upper level courses.

5.         Provide students who are not majoring in geology or an earth science based subject, the facts and principles of physical geology they will need to function as an informed and knowledgeable citizen.

Grading Criteria

 

The Final grade will be composed of:

Weekly Labs                  70%
Exams                            30%

The lowest lab grade will be dropped.

The overall course grade will be according to the following percentages:

A   90 - 100 %
B   80 - 89.99 %
C  70 - 79.99 %
D  60 - 69.99 %
F - Below 60 %

There will be no extra credit assignments. If you have a question about a grade, you have two weeks from the date that the grade is posted to ask for a review. After that two weeks the grade will be permanent.

 

Attendance

Class attendance is mandatory with attendance monitored using class roll.  There will be no makeups for missed homework, quizzes, labs, or tests unless prior arrangements have been made at least 24 hours in advance.

If you have not attended the class or contacted the instructor by the 12th class day of the semester (Sept. 9), you will automatically be dropped from the course and will not be able to re-enroll.
