Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Fitness & Wellness - 14th edition,  Hoeger,  No Access Card needed

11th, 12th and 13th editions can be used.  The page numbers may be a little different for assignments than what shows in the course content.


Computer.  Internet access.  Clothing suitable for exercise.

Student Performance

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed learning objectives with a minimum 70% competency level based upon regular participation in moderate fitness activities and completion of required assignments. Also the student will:

  1. Acquire essential skills for making positive behavior changes in the areas of Nutrition, Fitness, Stress Management and Weight Management.
  2. Choose and participate in an exercise program throughout the semester.
  3. Complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionaire(PAR-Q) form.
  4. Complete a Pre and Post fitness evaluation.
  5. Set specific long term and short term goals and monitor progress throughout the semester.
  6. Keep a daily log of exercise activities.
  7. Identify an aerobic conditioning, flexibilty and/or strength training program and progress through it during the semsester.
  8. Learn what the warm-up, aerobic/strength exercise, and cool down phases of exercise are.
  9. Become familiar with various aerobic, flexibility and/or strength training exercises which may or may not include exercise machines.
  10. Show improvement in fitness level as measured by the pre/post fitness evaluation.
  11. Participate in sufficient exercise sessions throughout the semester to show improvement in either strength, flexibility or aerobic fitness.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to behave in a manner consistent with the Amarillo College student code of conduct and when when applicable.

Cell Phones:  Cell phones are only allowed to be used in class when on the silent mode.  All phones may be monitored, but not answered for social conversation.

Grading Criteria

1. QUIZZES- 40%- “Assess Your Knowledge” quizzes. One for each chapter- Ch. 1-9.

2. EXERCISE LOG- 20%- Must exercise and complete the weekly exercise logs. Must show 20 total workouts(4 days per week for 5 weeks).

3. COURSE ACTIVITIES- 35%- Forms are found in the book at the end of chapters 1,2, and 3. Complete manually and turn in to instructor. Must include the following:

    · 2.1 Personal Fitness Profile: Pre and Post Test

    · 3.3 Exercise Prescription Forms

    · 3.4 Goal Setting Form


    · ParQ- Physical Activity Readiness Questionaire

    · Waiver of Liability

    · Bulletin board assignment- Introduce yourself to the class

    · Read the Syllabus

5.  Nine total chapter exams.  One per chapter.

90-100 = A

80-89 = B

70-79 = C

60-69 = D

Below 60 = F

Makeup Policy:  Contact instructor to make-up any missed assignments or  missed deadlines.

Students who do not finish the course and who do not formally drop the course through the Registrar’s Office will receive a grade of F.



This is and online course. Attendance is not required. Must log onto course and complete assignments as required.


The Instructor reserves the right to change the syllabus and/or calendar if needed.

Week One: Log onto the course, read e-mail from instructor and read orientation information. Complete Pre-Activity Assignments

Weeks 1-8: Complete course activity assignments.  Complete Chapter quizzes.  Complete exercise logs

Week 8: Complete Post fitness assessment

Additional Information

Carter Fitness Center will be closed for renovation the entire semester, so this will not be an option to do workouts.  You can do your workouts at other Fitness Facilities at home or at other convenient locations.

Students MUST use their AC College IDs to gain entry into Carter Fitness Center. Students are allowed three entries without IDs, after three no-card entries, you will not be allowed into the gym/class until a new card has been purchased.

Lockers will be rented beginning at noon on the third class day of each semester on a first come first served basis. Lockers must be paid for on a semester by semester basis because of the limited number of lockers available. Lockers must be cleaned out by the announced due date. Items left in the lockers after this time will be placed in the lost and found. The center lockers may be used on a daily basis only with no fees. All areas of the fitness center are available during the open times.
