Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

In-depth study and applications of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions, and systems of equations using matrices. Additional topics such as sequences, series, probability and conics may be included.

College Algebra, 11th edition, by Michael Sullivan, Prentice Hall (Optional)

Supplies

MyLabMath Student Access Code

Basics:  Blue-lined notebook paper (8.5" x 11") and blue-lined graph paper - 4 or 5 squares per inch or engineering graph paper, stapler, a straight edge, pencils, erasers, a highlighter in your favorite color.  You can get free graph paper at http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/lite/.   You will need a three ring binder and five dividers.

Graphing Calculator:  Any calculator in the TI-84 series.  You are required to bring your calculator to every class.  The Math Department policy is that no TI-89's, TI-92's or TI-Nspire calculators may be used on tests. Also of note, TI-83 calculators do not have enough functionality for this course.

Graphing Calculator checkout:  Students unable to purchase a graphing calculator can apply to the Adult Students Program for the privilege of checking one out for the semester.  Bring a copy of your schedule to the Adult Students Program, Student Services Center, Room 130 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  You must complete an application and be enrolled in a math class to receive this assistance.

Students who lose (due to accident / theft / any other mishap) or damage in any way a loaner graphing calculator will be required to replace the lost, stolen, or damaged calculator with a new TI-84 or TI-84 Plus graphing calculator.  Failure to do so will result in immediate action(s) taken by Amarillo College.

Student Performance

Learning Objectives:  After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

  1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of properties of functions, including domain and range, operations, compositions, and inverses.
  2. Recognize and apply polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions and solve related equations.
  3. Apply graphing techniques.
  4. Evaluate all roots of highter degree polynomial and rational functions.
  5. Recognize, solve and apply systems of linear equations using matrices.

NOTE:  The following Developmental Math topics will be imbedded in this College Algebra/STEM course:

Factoring; Rules of Exponents; Factor expansion:  distribution, foil, conjugates; Completing the Square, Complex Numbers; Rational Numbers:  operations; and other topics as needed.

Expected Student Behavior

Student Responsibilities:  Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of a positive learning environment.  Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to the following:  the use of cellular phones, texting, making offensive remarks, reading newspapers, talking, use of personal music systems, doing homework or other personal projects during class time, or engaging in any other form of distraction.  For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook htt;://sites.actx.edu/catalog/notices/.

Cheating is defined in Webster's College Dictionary as "taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers."  Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student's paper, copying from the homework solutions manual, or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz.  If the instructor sees a cell phone out during any exam, the instructor will assume that student is cheating and the exam will be taken up and a grade of "F" will be received for the course. 

Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action.

Food/Drink:  It is the policy of the Mathematics, Sciences & Engineering Department that food and drink be allowed in the classroom setting, at the instructor's discretion.  Food and drink are not allowed in the computer labs or in classrooms when laptop computers are in use by the student.

Phones/Pagers:  It is the policy of the Mathematics,Sciences & Engineering Department that cell phones and pagers must be turned off or in silent mode in the classrooms and the computer labs.

Policy on Cheating and Plagiariam:  Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College.  On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract.  Included in the contract is the following statement:  "I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic "F" in the course.  This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes the use of cell phone calculators, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, and copying.  Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test."  You will not be allowed to take your tests until this contract is signed and returned to your instructor.  Please Note:  NO CELL PHONES in the Testing Room.  If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, you will receive an "F" for the course!

ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
1.  BE ON TIME.
2.  BE PREPARED.
3.  NO DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR
will be tolerated.
4.  SUBSTITUTE BEHAVIOR.  If a substitute should come in to teach the class, you are expected to be on your best behavior and treat him/her with the highest respect.  I would not send anyone in to teach who is not fully capable of doing so.

Note:  When you attend class in a virtual environment, you are still expected to be fully clothed, even if your video camera is turned off (note: It is far too easy to turn on a camera instead of a microphone). Also, while masks are mandated I ask that no mask has derogatory language or politics.

Grading Criteria

The final average will be computed based on the following percentage basis:

MyLabMath Homework ........15%,   Daily Quizzes........10%,   Reviews........5%,        Exams (4 [time dependent] @ 12.5%).........50%,      Final Exam........20%

The final letter grades are assigned based on the following numerical result:

A ............90-100,   B............80-89,   C............70-79,   D............60-69,   F............59 and Below

 

MyLabMath Homework: Turning in all your homework is one of the best things you can do to improve your grade!  Expect to have homework that will be assigned after each section is covered in class.  Your instructor will give you the due date for each assignment.  LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  Instructions for enrolling in the MyLabMath course will be given in class.  All homework assignments can be attempted as many times as you wish.  You should be able to get a 100% on every assignment, if you work at it long enough.   At the end of the semester two homework grades will be dropped.

Daily Quizzes:

Once a section is completed, a take-home daily quiz will be given on that material.  You will often be given time to work on this in class, but time demands may prevent that from happening from time to time.  A blank copy of all quizzes can be found in Blackboard.  The quizzes will be turned in weekly.  To compensate, for life in general, I will drop the 3 lowest quiz grades (at the end of the semester).

Some notes to keep in mind:

1.  Expect to have quizzes assigned each day.  It will typically be turned in on Monday or Tuesday of the following weekLate quizzes will not be accepted.  Late is defined to be anything turned in after the instructor has asked for the quizzes to be turned in and lecture has begun.  You may turn in quizzes before they are due, but a late quiz will be counted as a zero.

2.  Quizzes must be done in pencil.  Anything that is wrong or needs to be corrected must be clearly erased.  Don't write, doodle, or perform mathematical calculations in the margins.  Homework must be neat and legible.  I will be the judge as to what is neat.  Just because you can read it doesn't mean that I can interpret it.

3.  If you need extra room, please use the back side of the quiz, and indicate that work is done on the other side of the quiz.  There will be no need to use notebook or spiral paper for the quizzes.  Any work done on notebook or spiral paper will not be graded, unless instructed otherwise by the instructor.

4.  Quizzes must be presented in an orderly manner with the answers circled or boxed.  Examples of orderly work will be shown in class.  Work that is illegible or disorderly will not be graded, and will result in a zero for that assignment.

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact another student to find out the quiz assignment for the following class and get the notes for the section(s) covered that day.  Also, if you are absent, you can still turn in your quizzes by sending them via email to t0485425@actx.edu.  The sent time must be before class starts, however; otherwise, the work will be considered late.

and remember, LATE HOMEWORK IS NOT ACCEPTED.

Exams:   Four major exams, time dependent, will be given and a comprehensive final.  If you miss a major exam, the grade on your final exam will be used to replace the missing grade.  I do not offer make-up exams.  If you know ahead of time that you will be missing an exam, you may schedule to take the exam early.  If you miss more than one exam (remember the first missed one is replaced by your grade on the final exam) a second missed exam will be recorded as a zero.  If you do not miss any exam and your final exam grade is higher than your lowest test score, I will replace the lowest test score with your final test grade.  Major exams will be administered in class, with a time limit of the class.  If you make below 70 on a major exam, a minimum of 1 (one) hour must be spent in the Outreach Center correcting your major exam or completing the test assignment. Due dates for corrections/test assignments will be provided throughout the semester.  Documentation of your time spent in the Outreach Center must be presented to me before the next major exam.

If you would like to take the exams in the testing centers, please let me know.

Reviews:  There will be a review for every major exam, except the comprehensive final, that the student must complete prior to taking the exam. Note that the Reviews must be completed prior to the exam.

Final:  Under NO circumstances will the final be given late (i.e. No Make Ups)!  The final will be comprehensive and will be given on the following date:

Wednesday, October 13, 2021.

I do not give extra credit work.

Free Help:  If you feel yourself getting behind in class or having problems with certain concepts covered, get help immediately.  It is YOUR responsibility to get help. 
The following are a few ways to get FREE help outside of class:
1.  Your instructor is your first, BEST resource for help.  Feel free to come to office hours or make an appointment.
2. Free one-on-one tutoring at the Student Outreach Center in Durrett 104 is available.  You will need your AC ID to sign in.  Hours:  MTWRF 8am - 8pm, Sat 9am - 8pm, Sun closed.
4.Get free tutoring from Student Support Services (Library, 371-5420)
Using Blackboard to print class materials, get your grades, contact your instructor, find class announcements, etc.:    Students will be required to log in to Blackboard regularly to check the course announcements, calendar, e-mails, grades and print class handouts.  To access our course area in Blackboard:

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential in a math class. It is during class that questions about homework, new assignments & announcements, and course content will be covered.

Please remember the deadline for dropping the course for the Fall 2021 Semester is Tuesday, October 5, 2021.  You must notify me before 12:00 PM on Monday, October 4, 2021 if you wish to drop in order to have time to process the request. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.
