Expected Student Behavior

Amarillo College English Department Plagiarism Policy, revised Spring 2013

The English Department takes plagiarism seriously.

Plagiarism is defined as the following:  the use of someone else’s exact words that are neither quoted nor cited; paraphrasing someone else’s words without citing them; or using someone else’s research without citing it.

Student plagiarism in the Amarillo College English Department is internally tracked.  To clarify, records will be kept in the Department of those students who have plagiarized.  At the beginning of each new semester, the names of students who plagiarized the previous semester will be sent to all English Department faculty.

Plagiarism may receive a penalty of a zero.  A subsequent infraction will be deemed a reason for expulsion from the class. At this point, the case will be referred to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

Note: Self-plagiarism will be discussed with the class by each instructor and infractions for such are left up to the individual instructor’s discretion.

Attendance

In previous semesters, students who attend every class and submit every essay are almost always succesful in this course. Students who do not attend almost every class and who do not submit each essay are far less likely to pass. To increase your learning and your chances of earning credit, come to class, write the required essays, and take the final exam.

Although good attendance is required for having a good outcome for this class, please do NOT come to class if you feel ill. Instead, please contact me immediately and stay home. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I will work with students who miss class due to illness and provide alternate instruction and activities so that there is no penalty for staying home when you don't feel well. However, I must know that you are missing class due to illness. I will not be able to offer alternate instruction and activities if you do not let me know that you are sick.

Additional Information

Policies Concerning Late Work:

All assignments must be submitted according to the deadline schedule posted in the calendar section of our AC Connect class. Late essays are penalized 10 percent per day that they are late. Essays more than three days late will not be accepted. Late peer review drafts, extra credit assignments, and in-class assignments are not accepted at all. To account for unavoidable emergency absences, the two lowest scores for in-class assignments are dropped.

Out-of-class quizzes in Blackboard may be taken more than once before the due date. Only the last score will count for credit. If the quiz is not completed before the due date, it does not earn credit.

The final exam must be completed on the day indicated on the course calendar.

Students are required to schedule and attend a session with a tutor in the Writers’ Corner for each of the three required essays if their average in the course is 70% or less. Students with better grades are encouraged to get help in the Writers' Corner as well, and all students may attend more than one session if they wish.
