The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. Your assigned repertoire serves as the main text for this course. You should purchase an original copy of your music to satisfy copyright law.

If we should have to work on lessons in a remote modality, you will need to have a computer, laptop, or other device that is Zoom capable. A quality microphone can make all the difference in your lesson (recommended Blue Yeti microphone).
Course Goals: 1) Refine the principal of posture, breath management, and healthy tone production for the singing voice. 2) Learn elements of good musicianship. 3) Learn techniques for preparing a song for performance, with attention on correct diction, background and style, poise, and interpretation. 4) Learn about the function and care of the voice and about your own vocal potential.
Course objectives: You will implement the course goals in preparation and delivery (performance) of your assigned repertoire.
After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:
Performances in studio class and in jury are considered much like a test. You are expected to dress appropriately for performance with your music memorized and researched prior to the performance. You will be working with a collaborative pianist to prepare and perform your songs. Learning your music is your responsibility before your meet with your pianist. They are not required to teach notes. Rehearsals with your collaborative pianist are arranged on a case-by-case basis.

Be prepared for every lesson! Your homework is completed in your practice time. There is no other substitute for practice.
Minimum of 1 hour of practice per day (2 hours is ideal), broken up into several segments to keep the voice fresh.
Attend studio class weekly.
Additional work on language skills using recommended recorded modalities (youtube, Rosetta Stone, websites)
Cultivate and nourish a teachable spirit so you are open to change and experimentation. Working on your voice is highly personal and can at times feel invasive. Be ready to hear honest assessment of where you are and ways to improve.
Grading criteria is as follows:
Final grade will be based on the following scale:
A=90-100%
B=80-90%
C=70-80%
D=60-70%
F=Below 60%
Each weekly lesson will receive a grade. Each lesson grade reflects attendance, preparation, improvement, attitude, mastery, and memorization of repertoire. The final exam is a jury performance in front of the entire music faculty and will count as an additional lesson grade. All literature must be presented and memorized. The student is allowed one selection of their choice and the faculty will choose from among the remaining selections.
Three missed lessons (excused or unexcused) lowers grade by 1 letter.
You must attend your lessons to earn your grade. If you are going to be absent, you must call and leave a message at office: 806-371-5347 or send word at least 2 hours before your lesson time. Absences and unexpected events happen. If you are unable to attend a lesson, you MUST contact the instructor (and collaborative pianist if applicable). Because your voice lesson time is reserved specifically for you, it is imperative that you keep your appointment. Failure to make contact regarding your absence will result in an unexcused absence. Every unexcused absence will result in a failing grade for that particular lesson. Three unexcused absences in a semester will result in a failing grade for the semester. Make-up lessons will be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor.
Lesson times will be assigned during the first week of the semester. Lessons will begin either during the first week of school, or during the second week of school if not scheduled prior to lesson time during the first week.
First lesson: Meet with instructor; determine individual goals for semester, choose music, and receive first practice assignment.
Second lesson: Prepare the given assignment, and bring all required materials to lesson.
Third and subsequent lessons: Each upcoming week's assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week's lesson.
13th week of school: All music for the jury examination must be memorized.
Final exams week: Individual music jury will be performed for the entire music faculty, in the Concert Hall. Sign-up for time slots of 10 minutes per student will begin during the 14th week of school, in the Music Department Office, Room 302.
You are highly encouraged to attend voice recitals, choir concerts, masterclasses, and other events related to voice.
Practice rooms are available, located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice.
