Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) 1.      Demonstrate a basic understanding of normal and abnormal human behavior, needs and emotions. 
2.      Interact appropriately with clients and families experiencing dysfunctional mental health.
3.  Demonstrate a basic understanding of Somatoform Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Eating Disorders, Mood Disorders, Substance Abuse, Schizophrenia, Dementia and Delirium.

The student will:

1.      Identify basic human and medical needs of persons experiencing dysfunctional mental health.

2.      Utilize the nursing process in caring for the mentally ill person.

3.      Define Somatoform Disorders.

4.      Differentiate the various Anxiety Disorders.

5.      Explain Eating Disorders.

6.      Discuss Mood Disorders and Suicide.

7.      Differentiate between substance use, abuse and dependence.

8.      Explain Schizophrenia.

9.   Discuss the impact of Dementia and Delirium upon the health of the elderly population.

Expected Student Behavior

Adult and professional behavior is expected in the classroom. Cell phones should be set to ‘vibrate’ and should not be answered during class. Text messaging is not permitted during class time. Students will not be allowed to videotape in the classroom. 

Grading Criteria

A: 90-100    B:  80-89   C: 75-79   D: 74-60   F: 59 & Below
 
Students must have a minimum grade of 75 in order to complete this course successfully.

GRADING CRITERIA:  

Weekly Assignments: 70%

Quizzes (6 quizzes): 10%

ATI Practice Exam (2 Exams): 10%

Final Exam: 10%

 

ATI Final Exam will be graded as follows: 

Level 3= 100

Level 2= 88

Level 1= 75

Below Level 1= 65

The final exam will completed in the testing center. The exam consists of 60 questions. Students have one hour to complete the exam. Test will begin on time; if students are late, they will not be allowed to enter and test. Cheating in any form will not be tolerated and may result in course failure. Measures are taken to avoid the opportunity of cheating:

  • No cell phone or smart watches are allowed in the testing room

  • Students should use the bathroom prior to the exam. If the student leaves the room during the test, the test will be stopped and the grade they earned at that point will be recorded.

  • Instructors may screen for cheating opportunities prior to and during the exams.

Make-up tests must be taken within one week of the scheduled test. It is the responsibility of the student to schedule the make-up test. Make-up exams may result in a deduction of 10 points (this will be at the instructor's discretion). Failure to notify the instructor via email prior to a missed exam may result in a grade of 0 for that exam.

 

Quizzes will be computerized and may be taken at a location of convenience to the student. The weekly quiz will be open each Friday from 12:00-2:00 pm. They are not designed to be group work; they should be completed independently. There will be 6 quizzes for a total possible 100 points. If there are technical difficulties, it is the student’s responsibility to email the instructor and contact IT as soon as possible. There will be no make-up allowed. 

 

Weekly assignments must be hand-written and submitted to the appropriate dropbox. Late submissions are accepted with a point deduction of 10 points per week. Assignments are designed to help the student understand the material. They can be completed as group work, but it is essential for each student to understand all material. Plagiarized work will not be accepted, and may result in a failure of the course. 

 

ATI Practice Exams are a required assignment. The grade earned by the due date will be the grade entered into the grade book. There are no limits to the number of times these Practice Exams can be taken. 

 

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class (90% attendance in class is required to pass the course). This course is a hybrid course, attendance will be assessed by completing weekly assignments and quiz.
