Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Study of childhood diseases and child care from infancy through adolescence. Focus on the care of the well and the ill child utilizing the nursing process.

Student Performance

1.  Analyze historic highlights of pediatric care and current trends.

2.  Explore the impact of illness on the child and family in relation to psychosocial and cultural concepts.

3.  Implement principles and concepts from biological and social sciences necessary to pediatric nursing care.

4.  Implement and follow caring, safe, and ethical nursing standards in providing care for pediatric patients and families.

5.  Develop interpersonal relationships utilizing communication skills with the child and family.

6. Utilize the nursing process to develop a care map for promotion and maintenance of pediatric health.

7.  Assist individuals to understand and/or cope with development and situational crises which occur during growth and development and promote health restoration of pediatric patients.

8.  Recognize developmental milestones for various pediatric age  groups and provide anticipatory guidance for families.

9.  Use evidence based nursing practice standards as a guide for promoting optimal health outcomes for the pediatric patient.

Expected Student Behavior

 Each student will adhere to the Amarillo College Student Handbook Policies and Procedures, the Amarillo College VN Honor Code Policy, and the Social Networking Policy. Any violation of these policies and procedures may result in failure of the course and possible dismissal from the program.

  • A = 90-100
  • B = 80-89
  • C = 75-79
  • D = 60-74
  • F = Below 60 

A final grade of 75 or higher is required to pass this course. The following will be used to determine your grade: 

  • Module Exams: 20% each (60% total)
  • Final Exam: 20%
  • PrepU/ATI Assignments: 5%
  • Pediatric ATI Exam: 10%
  • Quizzes 5%

ATI Grading:

  • Level 3: 100
  • Level 2: 80
  • Level 1: 60
  • Below Level 1: 40


It is required that a student who fails an exam make an appointment with the instructor to review the exam and spends at least one hour in tutoring. 



Tests are computerized and will be taken in the nursing testing center and are multiple choice questions. Cell phones and smart watches are not allowed in the testing center. If the exam is missed, the student must schedule the exam with the instructor and it must be done within one week of the scheduled exam. Make-up tests may be essay/short answer questions. Make-up exams may result in a deduction of 10 points (this will be at the discretion of the instructor). Failure to notify instructor of a missed exam may result in a grade of 0 for that exam. PrepU and assigned ATI must be complete by the exam date. Failure to master chapters in PrepU can result in course failure.


Regular attendance is necesary for satisfactory achievement and mandated hours are required by the Texas State Board of Nursing.  Therefore, it is the responsibililty of the student to attend class. Ninety percent (90 %) attendance of classroom lecture is required. Classroom content is 32 hours which will only allow a student to miss 3.2 hours of classroom content.  If more than 3.2 hours of classroom content is missed, students will receive a deduction of 5 points on the upcoming exam and potential failure of the course.
