Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Study of advanced skills in the early childhood setting for teachers and administrators. Content addresses 13 functional areas of quality child care, current research, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.

Supplies

The student will need access to the internet and Blackboard Learning for other resources needed during the semester.  

The student will need to purchase a notebook and have access to 10 page protectors for the CDA Professional Portfolio.

Student Performance

Study the requirements of the CDA credential.

Collect evidence of high quality to meet requirements of CDA credential.

Organize and provide evidence of all requirements met in a portfolio.

Expected Student Behavior

Your participation in class and online helps you learn more and makes the class more interesting.

You need to schedule time during each week to complete your coursework as if you were attending an in person class weekly.

Honesty, integrity, and respect will guide this course.  You are expected to treat all participants with respect at all times.  In discussing controversial issues, it is important that students feel comfortable expressing their opinion, yet it is imperative that students refrain from using derogatory or offensive language.

Read assigned chapters, view the chapter power point presentations, and participate in discussion forums every week.

Complete weekly learning activities and exams over course content.

Attend the scheduled in-class meetings as indicated in the schedule and actively participate in discussions.

Keep in mind that grades are not given.  Grades are earned based on student performance.  Please note the requirements for earning the grade you desire and act accordingly throughout the semester.  If you complete the coursework in a timely fashion, there isn’t a reason for you not to successfully complete this course.

Assignments and exams are due on the dates stated.  Late work will be accepted but will NOT receive full credit.  Partial credit is better than no credit!

Attendance at all scheduled classes = 30% of Final Grade
Professional Portfolio = 20% of Final
Grade
Professional Portfolio Activities = 15% of Final Grade
DAP Learning Activities = 25% of Final Grade

Final Exam = 10% of Final Grade

Attendance

Attend class regularly and promptly. Attendance is vitally important for the successful completion of this course.

This is a hybrid course.  Most of the instruction will be online and then we will meet as a class on Wednesday nights from 6-8  Please refer to the announcements in the blackboard course for exact meeting locations, whether in zoom, google meet, or in person.

The online portion of the course will run from Tuesday afternoon through Monday evening at 11:59 pm.

Calendar

This is a paired course, which means you are enrolled in CDEC 1294 ST: In Early Childhood and CDEC 2264 Practicum in Advanced Child Care.  To simplify things, the syllabus requirements for both classes will be identical and you will work in Blackboard from just one course.  All online work and homework will be found in the course CDEC 1294 ST: In Early Childhood.

Each module will open on Tuesday afternoons and be open through Monday nights, closing at 11pm.  All work for the week/module is due by 11pm on Monday nights.  Late work is accepted; however, it will not receive full credit.  But, partial credit is better than no credit!

Module 1

During this course, you will be compiling your CDA Professional Portfolio and you will be using the CDA Infant/Toddler or Preschool manual, depending on the age of children you teach.  You will also be doing coursework from the textbook, Developmentally Appropriate Practice by Carol Gestwicki.

  3. Complete Chapters 1, 2, 3, & 4.
