The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

MATH-1325-003 Calculus for Business & Social Sciences
Prerequisite: MATH 1316, 1324, or 1414 - minimum grade of C or Department Chair consent
This course is the basic study of limits and continuity, differentiation, optimization and graphing, and integration of elementary functions, with emphasis on applications in business, economics, and social sciences. This course is not a substitute for MATH 2313 or 2413, Calculus I.

On Campus Course
Graphing Calculator: You are required to bring your calculator to EVERY class. A TI-84 Plus calculator is preferred and will be used by the instructor. No calculators with logic or factoring capabilities are allowed (TI-89, nspire). Students unable to purchase a graphing calculator can apply to the Adult Students Program for the privilege of checking one out for the semester. No sharing of calculators is allowed and a cell phone calculator will not be permitted.
Access to a working computer with internet access and a printer. There are student computers located in the Math Outreach Center and Ware Student Commons for student use. This enables you to access the course in Blackboard and the online homework found at www.mymathlab.com.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
1. Apply calculus to solve business, economics, and social sciences problems.
2. Apply appropriate differentiation techniques to obtain derivatives of various functions, including logarithmic and exponential functions.
3. Solve application problems involving implicit differentiation and related rates.
4. Solve optimization problems with emphasis on business and social sciences applications.
5. Determine appropriate technique(s) of integration.
6. Integrate functions using the method of integration by parts or substitution, as appropriate.
7. Solve business, economics, and social sciences applications problems using integration techniques.

Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism: Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper, copying from the homework solutions manual, or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz. Any student caught cheating on an assignment will receive a grade of zero for the assignment. If a student is caught cheating on a test, a grade of zero will be assigned with no chance of the final replacing the grade.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.
Daily Homework (20%):
Daily homework assignments will consist of online assignments. Online assignments will be submitted using MyMathLab and will be automatically graded on the website. Details on how to register and enroll in MyMathLab will be given in class. Assignment deadlines will be indicated in MyMathLab with each homework set. I do not accept late homework. (To allow for missed assignments, the 2 lowest online homework grades will be dropped.)
Exam Reviews (10%):
Four exam reviews will be completed in MyMathLab before you will be able to access the online exam covering the material. Exam reviews are due by the due date listed on the course schedule.
Exams (14% each):
Expect four chapter exams that will be taken in the Math Testing Center - Durrett 103, and on MyLab Math. Due dates will be announced in class, and you will have a number of days to go to the testing center to take the exam. Late exams will NOT be accepted, unless you have made arrangements with me (please contact me if you have any issues getting exams taken and I will try to work with you in any way I can!).
Final Exam (14%) At the end of the semester, a comprehensive final will be given and students may use this to replace a low or missed grade. Only one exam is replaceable. If you miss more than one exam, a grade of zero will be averaged for the other missed exams.
Your course average (A 100 - 90, B 89 - 80, C 79 - 70, D 69 - 60, F Below 60) will be calculated using the following scale:

Tests 70% (This includes the Final Exam)
I DO NOT give extra credit work.
Regular attendance is essential in a math class. It is during class that questions about homework, new assignments & announcements, and course content will be covered.
Please remember the deadline for dropping an 8-week course for the Fall II 2021 semester is Wednesday, December 8th. Amarillo College has implemented a new drop policy requiring you to contact your instructor before you will be allowed to drop and get the necessary drop form. If you want to drop this course, you must notify me no later than 5pm on December 7th. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.

Food/Drink: It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department for food and drink to be allowed in the classroom setting at the instructor's discretion.
Phones/Pagers/Ear Buds/Headphones: It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that cell phones and pagers must be turned off or on silent mode in the classrooms and the computer labs. All ear buds and headphones must also be removed and turned off during class. During testing, phones must be stored out of sight and in silent mode. If a student answers a call during a test, the test will be collected and graded with no further work being done.
Pictures/Videos: Students are not allowed to take pictures or videos of the instructor's work without instructor consent.
AC Connect: Students will be required to login to AC Connect on a regular basis to check e-mail, course announcements, and grades.
