The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

BIOL-2420-003 Microbiology for Non-Science Majors
This course covers basic microbiology and immunology and is primarily directed at pre-nursing, pre-allied health and non-science majors. It provides an introduction to historical concepts of the nature of microorganisms, microbial diversity, the importance of microorganisms and acellular agents in the biosphere, and their roles in human and animal diseases. Major topics include bacterial structure as well as growth, physiology, genetics and biochemistry of microorganisms. Emphasis is on medical microbiology, infectious diseases and public health. The lab covers basics of culture and identification of bacteria and microbial ecology.

Each student must provide 100 examination gloves composed of a suitable material in his or her size. (One size-fits all is unacceptable.) These can be purchased at many drugstores or from the bookstores on Washington Street and West Campus.

Each student must purchase and bring to lab a micro lab coat (available used and inexpensively from the AC Biology Club or new from the Amarillo College bookstore and at many medical supply stores)

2. Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells on the basis of size, organelles, chromosomal characteristic, reproductive characteristics, and nutritional type.

SCIENCE TESTING CENTER (STC):
All tests will be taken on line as scheduled by the teacher. Exceptions to this time period shall only be related to a disruption or failure of the course management or delivery system. In-class quizzes may be given at the instructor’s discretion. If your internet is "spotty", you may schedule a time to take the exam on campus in the Science Testing center. Please note: Tests will be time limited and no test taken in the testing center may be started less than one and a half hours before the STC closes. MANDATORY TUTORING:
In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory tutoring session on line or in the Science Enrichment Center (SEC) before taking the next exam. On line tutoring will be accomplished utilizing MasteringMicrobiology.com
Before getting mandatory tutoring in the SEC, students must first make a tutoring session appointment with the SEC through

The SEC will do its best to accommodate a student’s schedule within the SEC hours of operation, M-Th 8am-8pm, F-Sat 9am-6pm. This may require plenty of advanced notice by the student as time slots fill quickly. Remote sessions are available. We prefer that students make an appointment to be in the center, but we can accommodate some non-mandatory tutoring walk-ins depending on which tutors are working at that time. Students needing mandatory tutoring must have an appointment.
Upon arrival in the SEC, students must inform SEC staff that they are there for mandatory tutoring.
Mandatory tutoring will not require remediation over a failed test.

Cheating:
Cheating will not be tolerated in any biology course at Amarillo College. Registration in the course indicates your acceptance and acknolwedgement of the following statement: "I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic “F” in the course. This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones*, copying or leaving the Science Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test."
Please Note: NO CELL PHONES in the Testing Room. If they see any electronic device out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, your test will be taken up immediately and may result in an "F" for the course!
You must make arrangement to make up lab work the day after you miss.

If you are having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, you should first try and resolve any such problems with me. If the problem is not resolved, you may proceed to the Department of Biological Sciences Chairperson (Dr. Richard Hobbs), the Dean of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Math, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the College President, IN THAT ORDER.
CLOSING OF THE COLLEGE DURING FINAL WEEK: Should it become necessary to close the College during the week of finals, the final schedule will move back one day.

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must consult with their instructor first. Students can either communicate via email or meet face-to-face with their instructor to begin the withdrawal process. If the instructor and the student both agree that withdrawal is the appropriate course of action, then the instructor will initiate a withdrawal case for the student in the Retention Alert System (AC Connect).
Students will receive confirmation that their withdrawal request has been completed. The Registrar’s Office will process the withdrawal and notify both the student and instructor via AC email.
