Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Course Description

Fundamentals of engine operation and diagnosis including lubrication and cooling systems. Emphasis on identification of components, measurements, inspections, and repair methods.

General: Engine Diagnosis; Removal and Reinstallation (R&R)

  • Complete work order to include customer information, vehicle identifying information, customer concern, related service history, cause, and correction. (P-1)

  • Research applicable vehicle and service information, including fluid type, internal engine operation, vehicle service history, service precautions, and technical service bulletins. (P-1)

  • Verify operation of the instrument panel engine warning indicators. (P-1)

  • Inspect engine assembly for fuel, oil, coolant, and other leaks; determine needed action. (P-1)

  • Install engine covers using gaskets, seals, and sealers as required. (P-1)

Cylinder Head and Valve Train Diagnosis and Repair

  • Remove cylinder head; inspect gasket condition; install cylinder head and gasket; tighten according to manufacturers' specification and procedure. (P-1)

  • Clean and visually inspect a cylinder head for cracks; check gasket surface areas for warpage and surface finish; check passage condition. (P-1)

  • Adjust valves (mechanical or hydraulic lifters). (P-1)

  • Remove, inspect, and/or replace crankshaft vibration damper (harmonic balancer). (P-2)

Lubrication and Cooling Systems Diagnosis and Repair

  • Perform cooling system pressure and dye tests tol identify leaks; check coolant condition and level; inspect and test radiator, pressure cap, coolant recovery tank, heater core, and galley plugs; determine needed action. (P-1)

  • Inspect, replace, and/or adjust drive belts, tensioners, and pulleys; check pulley and belt alignment.    (P-1)

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required to comply with the Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct. The Amarillo College Technical Education Code of Professional Conduct will be posted on the bulletin board in the Transportation Career Center and the Academic Classroom Center and will be explained in detail by the Instructor on the first day of class.

Safety Policy and PPE
Safety is everyone's job,and it starts before you enter the shop area.
1. Only Safety glasses' with side shields will be allowed.
2. Only long pants are allowed.
3. Only short sleeved close fitting Tee-shirts or long sleeved shirts rolled up past the elbow are allowed
4. No open toed shoes are allowed,students should wear work boots or work shoes.
5. Hair over shoulder length needs to be secured safely with a hairnet.
6. No necklaces, bracelets, dangling earrings, rings or watches are to be worn in shop.
7. No horseplay of any type will be tolerated.
8. Any vandalism or theft will not be tolerated.
9. Any student under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be dismissed from Amarillo College permanently.
 
Tools, Equipment,
Tools and equipment specified for this class and any recommended preliminary class are to be furnished by the student and be with the student during all lab activities. failure to have tools will result in the student receiving no lab grade for that class period.  All student tools should marked with the students initials for easy identification, these tools should be properly used and cared for, thus allowing for longevity and safety of both the user and the tool.

30% labs and tasksheets
10% final exam all students must take the final
All students must take Final to recieve credit. Finals are the last week of the 8 weeks. Review and cleanup will be Monday and Tuesday of that week. Finals will be Wednesday and Thursday with a BLC cookout Thursday at noon with all instructors and students in attendance.

If a student misses 10% of total class time a letter grade will be deducted
Students must attend 80% of the scheduled class time or they will be asked to drop from the class or fail
Students arriving 15 or more minutes late or leaving 15 or more minutes early receive a 50% for the day, 4 lates equals a absent (This includes taking longer breaks than given)
All assignments have a Due date and will not be accepted after that date, unless it is done in tutoring with max of 80%
Students must wear AC logo work shirt for class. Must have eye protection to enter the shop. Long hair must be put up.

Some information presented may be manufacturer specific. 

You MUST get your Instructor's permission to bring a vehicle into the shop. If you do not, you WILL be asked to leave the shop.

Vehicles are not to remain "overnight". Any work performed MUST be completed by the end of class. Verify you have ALL parts and supplies needed to complete any maintenance or repair. If unsure, ask your instructor prior to work being started.  

All vehicles brought into the shop MUST have a repair order filled out and placed on the windshield. 

Honk your horn prior to entering and leaving the shop. 

Have a window down and keys outside of the vehicle to prevent being locked out.
