Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) BIOL-2401-026 Anatomy and Physiology I

Prerequisites

Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

Textbooks

1. Lecture Book: Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology Eleventh Edition. By Martini, Nath and Bartholomew.  You may use the 9th or 10th edition if desired.

2. Netter's Anatomy Coloring Book 2nd Edition by John T. Hansen - Ebook PDF Version to print or paperback. An anatomy coloring book is VERY handy to see and color the anatomy yourself and read in that book the names and functions.

Supplies

Since we are online only for remote classroom, lab activities will be done with things at home. You need

  • Kitchen elements such as flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda and similar (making a cup cake)
  • Play Doh 4-6 colors; small amount, 50 cents type
  • Straws, food wrap, clothes pins, flashlight, print an eye chart and similar
  • We will build a bake a cup cake, build a cell, build a sarcomere, test our skin, test our muscles, and check our cranial nerves

Expected Student Behavior

Classroom (even remote) behavior should not interfere with the instructor’s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program. Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.  Students engaging in unacceptable behavior may be instructed to leave the classroom.  Inappropriate behavior may result in disciplinary action. Every effort will be made to maintain a proper learning atmosphere. Any student that violates the student code of conduct will be dealt with according to the procedures within the student handbook.

Use of Electronics: Please keep all cell phones and electronic devices turned off during the class period. Surfing the web, social networking, and texting during class in not appropriate or respectful classroom behavior.

Grading Criteria

Lecture/Laboratory Exams (35%): Lecture/Laboratory assessments include five major exams: 2 practicals and 3 exams. Each exam will worth a total of 100-150 points. The format of lecture exams may vary and include multiple choice, matching, identification and fill in the blank. Potential of 500 points. The exams will account for a total of 35% of the final grade. One of these exams will be dropped for lowest points.

The comprehensive final is worth 15% of overall grade.

Quizzes/Assignments (40%): There will be a series of 20-25 question exams on current chapter and review. In 16 weeks there will be at 7-8 of these exams. 2 or 3 of the lowest scores will drop. Potential 175 points.

Daily Quiz/Participation (10%): There will be participation spelling, laboratory practical, and class projects. Potential of 100 points.

Attendance

Attendance Policy: I will take daily attendance in a variety of ways and times. You cannot participate and engage in your learning if you are not here. You will maximize your learning and points by being present and active in your education.

All work must be completed individually unless otherwise stated. This includes homework and home testing. There are NO open-book tests unless specified. Cheating, cheats YOU! Commission of any of the following acts shall constitute scholastic dishonesty: acquiring or providing information for any assigned work or examination from any unauthorized source; informing any person or persons of the contents of any examination prior to the time the exam is given in any subsequent sections of the course or as a makeup; plagiarism; submission of a paper or project that is substantially the same for two courses unless expressly authorized by the instructor to do so.
