Syllabus Information

Textbooks

We will use Develop in Swift Fundamentals for Xcode 13. This book is free and you can find it here:

https://books.apple.com/us/book/develop-in-swift-fundamentals/id1581182804

You will need a free Apple ID to download the book.

Supplies

Pen or pencil and paper for notes.

Your own Apple ID and password. This is free.

Mac Computer:

Although the Swift programming language is open source and you can run it on any platform, you'll need a Mac for Xcode, which is the IDE*  we'll be using.  If you don't have one, the college has MacBooks that we'll loan you for the semester.

To check out your laptop, please schedule a time with Kathy Davenport (k0254517@actx.edu) either Tuesday or Wednesday of Week 1. She's on the third floor of the Byrd building on the Washington Street campus.

Click here to schedule a time to pick up your loaner MacBook.

Please pick up your computer as soon as possible or you'll quickly fall behind. If you schedule a pick up, please come to the appointment

We can't ship these computers, so you'll have to come by the college if you need to borrow one.

If you are not borrowing a Mac but using your own, it must have Xcode 13 and Apple Books installed.

* IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment. It's where we'll do all the magic.

Student Performance

By the end of this class students should have an intermediate understanding of the Swift programming language and development for iOS devices. This includes a deeper familiarity with protocols, delegates, data types, property observers, polymorphism, autolayout, table layout, initializers, and other intermediate topics.

This is a practical class, and I will evaluate your grade based on the work and problem sets I assign throughout the semester.
