Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Access to a reliable computer and reliable internet. Smartphones have numerous problems with the Exams and Quizzes in this course. All students should have access to a desktop or laptop computer with a reliable internet access when taking Exams and Quizzes.

  1. Define and describe federalism and other ways of organizing government and know the status of the American states within the federal system and the changing character and development of the Federal relationship.
  2. List and describe three branches of government in Texas.
  3. Know the Constitutional powers and limitations of political actors in Texas.
  4. Identify and define the rights of Texas Citizens.
  5. Evaluate the public policies of the government of Texas in comparison to ideals.
  6. Explain the protection of the individual through the limitations on government power through federalism, separation of powers, checks and balances, the Bill of Rights, and democracy.
  7. Explain the structures and functions of political participation including parties, interest groups, and elections.
  8. Explain the historical development of constitutionalism as a basis for political society and the historical development of the Texas Constitution and the Political system that has developed under that Constitution.
  9. Explain local government structures, functions, and organization in Texas.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to follow all Amarillo College policies and procedures.

During discussions in the course; students are expected to be professional and follow common curtesy. The discussions in this class are meant to bring up various positions and sometimes the debate can be heated; however, it is appropriate to attack a certain argument or point of view, but it is never appropriate to attack the person who is posting information with which you may disagree.

Grading Criteria

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59
Exams Average  –  40%
Chapter Assignments – 25%
Discussions Average  –  25%
Course Paper  –  10%

All exams are online; there are no makeup exams.   If a student scores below 70% on an exam or writing assignment, he or she will be required to attend tutoring per the instructor’s directions before being allowed to complete the next assigned work.

Assignment Dates for Govt 2306 Section 12 Texas State Government

The class week runs from 12:01 AM Monday through 11:59 PM Sunday and all work must be submitted by the end of the class week.

Note: There are no makeup credits in this course if an assignment is submitted past the deadline or not submitted at all.  There are no extra credit assignments available in this online class.

Discussion questions are available the entire class week as are the Revel chapter assignments for the week.

Major exams 1, 2 and 3 will be only available from Friday at 12:01 AM until Sunday at 11:59 PM.  Exam 4 will be available only from Monday at 12:01 AM until Wednesday at 11:59 PM.  Exams are 50 questions and you will have one hour to complete the exam.  To ensure you have plenty of time to complete the exam, I suggest you start no later than 10:30 PM if you take the exam on the last available exam day.   

You will have two weeks to complete the Ethical Dilemma Essay.   The topic is posted in the instructions and you will need to click the down arrow to access the essay topic and instructions for the assignment.  The grading rubrics will be posted in the announcements the first week the essay assignment is introduced.

Note:  The class week runs from Monday at 12:01 AM through the following Sunday at 11:59 PM.   

  Failure to complete the Revel week 1 assignment will result in you being dropped from the class for non-attendance on Tuesday, January, 25 2022

Attendance

The online US Government course will not have any on campus meetings. Students must log on to this course in ACOnline the first day of regular classes and follow the instructions for the course. If a student needs individual assistance they can contact me to work out the problems or schedule an appointment.

Attendance and/or participation requirements in courses delivered electronically (telecourses and on-line courses) will be unique to the individual course.

Be sure and read each weekly announcement for information on what assignments are due for the week and any other information I need to share with you.

As soon as possible, read the syllabus over carefully: this schedule is copied from the syllabus but included here to save you time. If you fail to complete all of the REVEL Week 1 assignments by 1-23-22 you will be administratively dropped from the class on 1-24-22.

Chapter 3: Texas Government and Politics in the Federal System

Chapter 4: Local Government in Texas

Chapters 3 and 4 are due 1-30-2022

Participate in Discussion One Texas Political Subcultures: this will be available 1-24-2022 and due 1-30-2022

After completing chapters 3 and 4 take the First Exam: this will be available from 1-28-2022 to 1-30-2022 and cover chapters 1 - 4.

 

Week Three

Read and complete in REVEL:

Chapter 5: The Texas Legislature

Chapter 6: The Texas Executive

Chapters 5 and 6 are due 2-6-2022

 

Participate in Discussion 2 Amarillo City Commission:  this will be available 1-31-2022 and due 2-6-2022.

 

Week Four

 

Read and complete in REVEL:

Chapter 7: The Texas Bureaucracy and Policy Implementation

Chapter 8: The Judicial System in Texas

Chapters 7 and 8 are due 2-13-2022

 

After completing chapters 7 and 8, take the Second Exam: this will be available from 2-11-2022 to  2-13-2022 and cover chapters 5 6, 7, and 8

 

 

Week Five

Read and complete in REVEL:

Chapter 9  Political Socialization, Political Behavior, and Public Opinion

Chapter 10: The Party System in Texas

Chapters 9 and 10 are due 2-20-2022.

Begin work on the Course Paper Ethical Dilemma - Available 2-14-2022 through 2-27-2022. Find the assignment under the Paper & Instructions Tab. Submit the paper through the Paper link with that assignment.

Participate in Discussion 3   Texas Judges: Elect or Appoint?   This will be available 2-14-2022 and due 2-20-2022.

 

Don’t forget - Course Paper Project: Ethical Dilemma Paper: 2-27-2022.

 

Week Six

Read and complete in REVEL:

Chapter 11: Elections, Campaigns, and Voting in Texas

Chapter 12: The Mass Media in Texas Politics

Chapters 11 and 12 are due: 2-27-2022.

 

After completing chapters 11and 12, take the Third Exam: this will be available from 2-25-2022 to 2-27-2022 and cover chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12

Tuesday, March 1 2022, is the last day to withdraw from the class.

 

Week Seven

Read and complete in REVEL:

Chapter 13: Interest Groups and Political Power in Texas

Chapter 14: Contemporary Public Policy Issues in Texas

Chapters 13  and 14 are due: 3-6-2022.

Participate in Discussion 4  How You Were Politically Socialized: this will be available 2-28-2022 and due 3-6-2022.

 

Week Eight

There is no comprehensive final exam.

Exam 4 is available from Monday through Wednesday only

Take Exam 4: this will be available from 3-7-2022 to 3-9-2022 and cover chapters 13 and 14.

BE SURE AND NOTICE THAT THERE ARE ONLY THREE DAYS FOR THIS LAST WEEK.  YOU MUST HAVE EXAM 4 COMPLETED BY 3-9-2022 SO GRADES CAN BE POSTED IN TIME!!
