Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Prerequisite: MATH 1314 or MATH 1324-minimum grade of C or Department Chair consent

Course Description

Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

REQUIRED: MyStatLab

If you purchase the text book, make sure it includes the MyStatLab Access Code.

You may choose to just buy an access code and not a textbook at all since the access code gives you access to an online e-book.  You may puchase an access code from the AC Bookstore or directly on the MyStatLab site.   If you do not like to read online, you may want to consider purchasing the book as you will need to read the sections in the book for this course.

 Getting Started with MyStatLab

 To access MyStatLab where your online homework is located, first log into our course in Blackboard.   You will need the following information:

Student Access Code: If you chose to purchase a new textbook, the student access code can be found in the MyStatLab kit wrapped with your textbook. If you chose not to purchase the textbook, you can buy the access code online with a credit card  during the registration process.

Email Address: Use the address you check most often.

To register and enroll

  1. Log into your Blackboard course.  Click the MyStatLab link at the left of the page.

    Tip: If you have previously linked your Blackboard and Pearson accounts, you are taken directly to the Pearson payment page. Go to step 4.

  2. Review the license agreement and privacy policy and click I Accept.
  3. To link your Blackboard and Pearson accounts, enter your Pearson account username and password.

    If you do not have a Pearson account, click Create and follow the instructions.

  4. Select an access option:
    • Enter the access code that came with your textbook or was purchased separately from the bookstore.
    • Or, Buy access using a credit card or PayPal account.
    • Or, get temporary access by clicking the link near the bottom of the page.  You will be able to update your account by making a payment at a later time.
  5. From the You’re Done page, click Go to My Courses.

    You'll also get a confirmation email.

To get started after registering:

1.)  Log into Blackboard by clicking the AC Connect button at the college website www.actx.edu. 
2.)  Click the MyStatLab link at the left of the page in our course in Blackboard.
3.)  Click the SECOND link, "MyStatLab with Pearson e-text Course Home." This is where you can review previously submitted assignments by clicking on Gradebook or Review.
4.)  To work on assignments, click the “Homework” button, and choose the section you wish to complete.
5.) To access the textbook, click the “Chapter Contents” button, and choose the chapter and section you wish to view.
6.) To view a power point presentation of a particular section, click the “Multimedia Library” button, and choose the chapter and section you wish to view or print.
7.) Under the “Homework” button, START YOUR FIRST HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT, “Orientation”

Supplies

Computer and Printer:  In order to access and complete course work, students will need a reliable computer to use on a daily basis.  A printer is also necessary, as students will be required to print notes, labs, and other course materials.  A device with a camera (such as a cell phone, tablet, or laptop) will also be necessary for lecture and lab as well as scanning and submitting written work.

Internet:  Students will need daily access to  access lecture videos, and to complete online homework.

If your technology at home isn’t working or working well, we will have options to help you. The Underground will be open on Washington street and is following the CDC safety procedures to protect you, us, and everyone else. The Underground has the technology you need as well as the people who can help you log-in, learn how to operate Blackboard or other tools your professor will use. YOU CAN BE SUCCESSFUL! Textbook:  The textbook is not required for class, but students will have full access to the e-book on MyMathLab.

Student Performance

 

After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Explain the use of statistics and sampling as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  2. Recognize, examine, and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
  3. Explain the role of probability in statistics.
  4. Examine, analyze, and compare various sampling distributions (binomial, normal).
  5. Describe and compute confidence intervals.
  6. Solve linear regression and correlation problems.
  7. Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.
  8. Conduct parametric and non-parametric inferential statistical tests.

Expected Student Behavior

POLICY ON CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM:  Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. Students that cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on your permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, copying or leaving the Math Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.
 

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:  Students are expected to behave in the online environment the same way as in a traditional classroom.    In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered.  The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met.  Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to; denied access to online course, consultation with department chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.

Grading Criteria

The final average will be computed based on the following percentage basis: 
Attendance 5%  Homework….....10%, Labs.........10%, Exam Reviews 5%  Exams  ………... 50%,  Final Exam.…... 20%  

The final letter grades are assigned based on the following numerical result:

A….........90 - 100,  B……......80 - 89, C….........70 - 79, D………..60 - 69, F……......Below 59

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD / EXAMINATIONS / ASSIGNMENTS and GRADING:

Attendance (5% of your overall grade): Daily attendance is cruicial to your sucess in this course. After two absences, five points will be deducted from the attendance average for every day that is missed.  Credit will also be deducted when the assigned lectures notes have not been completed.
Online homework (10% of your total grade):  All homework is in MyStatLab.  After registering, click on the "homework" button found on the homepage.  Online homework must be submitted on or before the due date. The due dates for the online homework and tests will be listed on MyStatlab.Two lowest homework grades will be dropped. Turning in all your homework is one of the best things you can do to improve your grade!

Online and Written Labs (10% of your overall grade): Labs will be completed in Rstudio and on paper. Directions about the labs will be given in class.

Online Exam Reviews (5% of your overall grade): Exam reviews will be completed in MyStatsLab.

Tests (50% of your total grade):  A minimum of 4 tests will be completed. Exams may NOT be taken late.  If a student misses an exam the grade will be replaced by the final exam grade.  Any additional missed exams will receive a grade of 0.

Exams:  Four (4) major exams will be given outside of class meeting time in the Math Testing Lab. Students must show an Amarillo College ID and turn in an exam review before testing.  No late exams will be given, no matter the reason.  If you know in advance that you will be gone during the assigned exam dates, you MUST make arrangements with your instructor to take the exam early in the Math Lab. No late exams will be accepted.  If the final exam grade is higher than the lowest major exam grade, the final exam will replace that lowest grade and also count for the final exam grade.  

If you score below a 70 on an exam, you will be required to spend a minimum of 1 (one) hour receiving help in the Math Outreach Center (Durrett Room 104) before you will be allowed to take the next exam.  Documentation of your time spent in the ORC must be stapled to your completed review before you will be allowed to take your next exam.

Final (20% of your overall grade):  Under NO circumstances will the final be given late (i.e. No Make Ups)!!  The final be comprehensive and timed.

Keep on track:  All homework and tests can be started early.  You may work ahead.  Do not to wait until the last minute to start an assignment so that if you are ill or have technical difficulties you are not put in a bind.

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Please remember the deadline for dropping a class at AC is published in the official Amarillo College Schedule of Classes. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.

You must be working on assignments in an online course to be considered attending. 

The deadline for dropping this course is Tuesday March  1, 2022. Students now have to visit with the instructor and complete a drop request form before being allowed to withdraw from a course.  It is the student's responsibility to turn the form into the registrar once the instructor has signed it.  Deadline for letting me know you want to drop is noon on Tuesday March 1, 2022.  If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.  Note:  Late drops will NOT be given under any circumstance.
