Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.

Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) Expected Student Behavior

Music students at Amarillo College have the opportunity to engage in many different performing ensembles. A high standard for student conduct is expected from all community members and Amarillo College Students enrolled in any course to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all students and faculty.

All participants must comply with the following:

  1. Adhere to the Amarillo College Student Rights and Responsibilities document which is found online in the AC Student Handbook.
  2. Be punctual for all rehearsals and events as outlined in the course syllabus.
  3. Use of Music Department percussion equipment is by permission only. Percussionists must store equipment properly after each rehearsal.
  4. Never engage in any inappropriate social interactions including but not limited to profane or lewd remarks to students or faculty.
  5. Do not share or subject fellow students to offensive images or materials.
  6. Sensitivity to the diverse views of the Amarillo College community is expected.
  7. Making unfavorable and/or slanderous remarks about fellow students and faculty members is not permitted.
  8. Use of alcohol or illicit substances is not allowed while engaging in any Amarillo College activity.
  9. Students under the influence of alcohol while participating in any AC sponsored activity will be subject to disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Music Students are graded on attendance and participation in performances and rehearsals.  

Attendance

Students are expected at all rehearsals. Students may only miss 2 rehearsals for any reason to maintain an A in the course. Attendance at all performances is mandatory. Review the calendar carefully.

COURSE SYLLABUS FOR CONCERT BAND (Amarillo Wind Ensemble)

MUEN 1121, 1122, 2121, 2122, MUEN 1122, 2122

PREREQUISITE: Basic proficiency on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Amarillo College Community Concert Band serves Amarillo College music and non-music majors as well as local community members from the Texas Panhandle.

SUPPLY LIST: Instrument in good playing condition, pencils, and appropriate accessories.

 

STUDENT PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the completion of the semester, the student will be able to:

1. Develop a better understanding of rhythm, and apply this skill to individual and ensemble playing.

2. Learn to better recognize correct intonation within the ensemble as related to the student’s personal performance.

3. Gain a greater understanding of musical style and historical context of the music performed this semester.

4. Participate in a fulfilling musical performance (2-3 concerts per semester)

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Two absences from rehearsal per semester is allowed with no penalty. Each subsequent absence incurs a 10 point grade deduction. i.e. 3 absences = 80, 4 absences = 70 etc. Missing the Dress Rehearsal for any reason is a 25 point deduction. Missing a concert is a zero for the exam grade.

DISABILITY STATEMENT: Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact Accessibility Services (SSC 125, Phone 371-5436) as soon as possible.

Performances are considered the equivalent of examinations. Attendance at all performances is required.
