The Tutoring for Success policy applies to any student whose grade or performance in the course falls below a departmentally determined minimum threshold. In either of those cases, the instructor will direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. Under this policy, the instructor will follow specific departmental guidelines governing the use, duration, and grade component of the tutoring need.
Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.
NOTE: Students who are attending Texas institutions of higher education, for the first time fall 2007 and later, may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career. This withdrawal limitation does not include dual credit or developmental classes (Senate Bill 1231 Rule 4.10.) One 60-minute lesson per week, minimum six hours of outside practice per week required. Emphasis on basic technique and musicianship, with appropriate literature tailored to the needs/desires of the individual student.

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:
1. Have a basic understanding of musical notation, including the names of notes in the treble/bass clef, rhythmic notation, time signatures, key signatures, and terminology.
2. Play several major scales with each hand with correct fingering.
3. Play several technical exercises.
4. Play at least 4 pieces with correct notes and rhythms for the instructor.
The student will show a continuous, steady improvement in the master of basic technical and musical skills at the piano. Problems of hand coordination, use of pedal, dexterity of the fingers, various touches, and other aspects relative to basic study of the piano will be addressed. By the end of the semester the student will be able to play various technical exercises appropriate to the level of study, and at least four pieces from the piano repertoire as a final examination.

Consistent, daily practice is essential for improvement of piano skills. Students should practice at least 6 days per week, for a minimum of 30 minutes per day.
Weekly improvement is essential.
Attending piano studio (likely on Friday) is a must. Miss more than two will result in a failing grade.
Performance on the recital attendance is encouraged.
5 missed lessons will be result in F grade.
First lesson: Meet with instructor; determine individual goals for semester, choose textbook/music, and receive first practice assignment.
2nd lesson: Prepare the given assignment, and bring all required materials to lesson.
3rd and subsequent lessons: Each upcoming week’s assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week’s lesson.
Final lesson, given during last week of the semester: At least 4 pieces learned throughout the semester, plus appropriate technical exercises such as scales, arpeggios, finger exercises, etc., will be performed for the instructor.
Practice pianos are available:
Piano lab, Room 203: 12 electronic pianos with headphones, available when room is not being used for classes
Practice Rooms: located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice.
